New York Mets 2009-10 Winter report

So, Benjie's a Giant once again. I'm glad the Mets didn't cave to his demands of additional years. However, We do need to find a better answer at catcher I think. Glad to see we're down to just Pagan to get signed for next year with Green, Feliciano, and "Frenchy" coming to terms.

Yup Syam we are still waitin on Angel Pagan who is looking for $1.8 million, while the Mets offered $1.27 million. You remember Pagan and the Mets avoided arbitration last off season, settling on a one-year, $500,000 contract. So now the two sides will now go to arbitration in early February, when a court will determine a middle ground. It may be tough, considering the center field situation, for the Mets to explain why he doesn’t deserve to be paid what he wants to be paid. In either case, Pagan is under contract with the Mets through 2012, after which he is eligible to become a free agent.

As for Molina, I did want him to work with our young pitchers there is no doubt he would have been very good for them. It’s a loss but at least we won’t have to watch him waddle around the bases. Have you seen him run?? Yeah, I know, it’s not what he’s paid to do. ;) Omir Santos will likely be the Mets primary catcher along with Henry Blanco. I don’t see what some are saying that they would sign either Torreabla or Barajas.

So what’s left? Well a pitcher of course, I mentioned yesterday that Sheets would be pitching and a lot of eyes were on him. The scout’s watching him reported that he threw ‘very well,’ and, ‘He threw easy. Sheets topped out at 91 mph, which is good for him, Another said he ‘looked good,’ he had ‘good mechanics,’ and he’s way ahead, in terms of velocity, compared to where he’d be at the start of Spring Training. Another scout said Sheets threw all fastballs in his first round, during which he looked a bit ‘erratic,’ then, after a quick break, he returned to pitching, mixing in curve balls, which ‘looked pretty good. His curve ball was in the mid-60 mph range. The focus is still on Pineiro and without Molina the Mets will have more money to spend on him.

First base has not been decided but a lot of people believe it will be Murphy, a solution I like very much.
You can see Murphy with Kevin Burkhardt on Mets Hot Stove Thursday at 7 on SNY.

Then there is center field and more and more we hear the Mets will stay with Pagan and perhaps put K-Mart in from time to time till Beltran is healthy. A solution I support

Well, so much for the pitching being a priority; Piniero goes to the Angels and Doug Davis to the Brew Crew. Looking more and more like the Mets want to operate on "the cheap" this season. I think it's gonna be "what you see is what we got", and hope for the best. I'm thinkin' the Mets and Pagan will settle somewhere in the middle before the arbitration hearing.

Sooo another one goes bye bye.
Joel pineiro is signing a two-year deal to pitch for the Angels, worth around $16 million.
I know that Pineiro for what ever reason did not want to pitch at Citi, well I have never been all that excited about him anyways. So I m not crying today about not getting him.
So now we are down to Sheets and Garland and maybe a couple more
We also know that the Rangers are hot for Sheets and he is hot for them. Sheets likes Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux. The Rangers may be the front runners in the Sheets race. Ben is looking for about 10 Million plus incentives. Oh, and he lives in Dallas.
I lost interest in this second starter position after all the big fish got away so I have no real favorite to come aboard here. But Pinero was my last choice with Sheets and then Garland. I gotta say after hearing all the scouting repots on what Sheets did the other day I am leaning now to him. All the scouts who watched Ben pitch said he looked good and some even said great.
If he can stay healthy (he did not Pitch in ’09) he could be our guy. IF HE CAN STAY HEALTHY!
As for Garland, well he doesn’t strike out many batters and in fact he gives up too many hits, also I don’t recall his ERA ever dropping below the mid 4s. But he is an innings eater prolly get at least 200 outta him.

In other news Cory Sullivan has signed a minor League Contract with the Astros and has been invited to Spring Training. Maybe we shoulda held on to him he has a nice glove and decent bat. I guess the Mets thought they had no room for him but with the Beltran thing going on I would have held on to Cory. We also gave up Jeremy Reed to the Blue Jays. With both of them gone now we for sure have lost some depth in the outfield. I’m just sayin.

I'm sure there will some outfielders available during and right after spring training, not sweating that out too much. Ben Sheets and, as reported in today's News, Chin Ming Wang, both interest the Mets somewhat, but I can't believe the Mets are going to want to meet their salary requests. It looks to me like it's going to be a shoestring budget, relatively speaking, this season.

I just saw where the Metties have traded Stokes to Anaheim for "Sarge" Matthews. I'm not thrilled we gave away a serviceable arm for a retread whose best years were steroid induced. He had a very mediocre career going until he got to the steroid farm in Texas with Canseco, Pudge, et al. I guess he can hold the fort until Beltran returns.....

Yeah forgive me while I yawn and fall asleep.
just what we needed now, get rid of another pitcher for an over the hill steroid using hack. Yeah I know, Brian was never really the best or effective reliever, but I agree he is "servicable"
One thing it will do is keep Fernando Martinez inTriple-A for most of this season
Matthews will now be our a fourth outfielder, but I expect Pagan to get most of the playing time at center.
The Angles have been trying to dump Matthews for some time, and
now they have, right in our laps.
Who needs him.

His father wasn't the most athletic player but played the game hard and all out,all the time,no cheating allegations and play like he was cheating the fans out of their money ...he really deserved the nickname he was so beloved by,"Sarge",not his son.Eric Byrnes would have been a better choice, maybe not a full time player anymore but a grinder who a club like this needs setting the example how to play every day, with passion, pride and intelligence.Angel Pagan may not have the best baseball IQ out there himself but has the talent and and showed last year with consistent play his upside still has room to expand. He should beat out Bush League Matthews who is fast approaching over the hill and has only one great year in a mediocre resume going for him...talent wasted even if his defensive skills are still adequate.Only good thing is the Angels are paying almost all his contract so if he's a bust as expected, the Mets won't be left holding the bag.At least Minaya didn't do that,or he would qualify as certifiable.

Brian Stokes probably should have been given an extended look see in spring training...has the stuff and at times did impress. You give up a very useful if not core chip like that as part of a trade that really can help the organization depth wise, minor or major league level and not a really, really iffy reclamation project.

Well,Omar Minaya promised by spring training the Mets will have added enough to make it a serious contender in the East....so far with the addition of Jason Bay(which does help)there needs to be a little more offense/defense stabilizing and higher caliber type starting pitchers added.I would not call Jon Garland an improvement if the Mets go there...they had better get someone more like Ben Sheets or Erik Bedard(an injury risk but very solid if healthy). They may re-sign Fernando Tatis to platoon with Daniel Murphy at first, which wouldn't be a bad thing.Omar better get serious and better get moving.

Yup saucy it’s all pretty weak and kinda sad.
Right after the winter meetings The Mets made us a promise that “big things” were coming…well Omar when can we look forward to that?
The Bay accusation was nice…I guess, but that’s about all we got. The Mets let all the good pitching get away and could not seal the deal for a catcher. Instead we got Matthews, excuse me while I not get excited.
Day after day we watched as other teams made deals and strengthened their teams while the Mets sat on their ass and watched. The Nationals are quietly putting together a formatable team, the Marlins have been spending money firming up and the Phillies got even stronger. The NL East has with the exception of the Mets has become quite the division and it will be a very competitive 2010 season.

Omar even yesterday insists that something good is coming, just what that could be I could not say, cause there is very little for the Mets to do this late in the game that would be impress me. I suppose he is talking about pitching but all we can expect is maybe Sheets or Garland to make us more competitive in 2010. Of course it will help but it does not excite me all that much.
We needed a quality starter, and a catcher who could call good games and be helpful with the struggling pitchers, we did not get either one of those. We did not need an over the hill center fielder, but that we did get.
I am resolved to the fact that we may end up counting on Pelfrey and Maine on the mound with Santana coming back better than ever. That along with a strong return from our injured payers like Reyes and Beltran along with DWright finding his swing again, Pagan finding his way around the bases without getting lost and Murphy continuing to grow and impress. That may be our only hope.

So I am gearing up for 2010 with no expectations of anything much else happing before opening day, I am counting on my boys to pull it together and give us the most productive season they can.
Nothing can beat my spirit, it’s only 5 weeks to the first spring training game and a little over two months till we play ball at Citi. Then comes June and the Cyclones, and I start pitching again for my own team. I can smell, taste and feel baseball, and the Mets boring winter can not begin to spoil that for me.

lol, yeah, I guess if you think Jason Marquis is a difference-maker. :(

Good one dude ;)

I turned to my friend who's a Mets fan yesterday and I said, "why are our teams just sitting around with their thumbs up their asses while the Braves and Phillies get ready to go 1-2 in the division again?"

I am glad you mentioned the Braves, my bad for leaving them out of the running in the NL East. You have to think from an offensive standpoint, Atlanta has gotta have high hopes for the power of Troy Glaus and Melky Cabrera. Glaus will need to stay healthy and master first base. It will be interesting to see how well Billy Wagner performs.
The team has a very special incentive for winning this year; it will be Bobby Cox’s last after 25 years managing that club. The team is going to work that much harder to give Bobby a win in his last year.

Atlanta will be interesting,sonny.

Less than four weeks til spring training and after the genius move of Omar Minaya to grab retread bust Gary Matthews in spring training:rolleyes:(better outfielders like Randy Winn were available)to be in the mix in center field until Carlos Beltran gets back in May,can hardly wait for the next bozo move. They're expecting Angel Pagan to win the centerfield battle but apparently with his penchant for poor baserunning/occasional brainlock wanted him to know that the job was his to earn, not be entitled to.They could have acquired any of a number of solid role players who would add substantially to depth in case of injury.Gary Matthews with his baggage is the LAST player I would have looked to bring in,I don't care the Angels are still going to pay 90% or whatever of the remaining 21 mil or so of his contract. That's how much they wanted to be rid of him. What was Omar thinking(or maybe more appropriately, what was Omar toking?)

Ben Sheets looks really good. The Mets may have to overpay($8-10 mil plus a vesting option should he remain healthy)to get him but at this point,I wouldn't even look in Jon Garland's direction. They've got to make an aggressive ,all out move for him.Jason Bay will be helpful,a good clutch power bat who won't be the disaster in the outfield some are making him to be(From those who worked with him he may not be a Gold Glover by any means but will be at least adequate out there and play hard and smart)We apparently are as you stated otherwise largely going to be dependent on the recovery of last year's walking wounded, continued progress from Jeff Francouer and power bounce back by David Wright, who even with CitiField's right field dimensions should have hit 10 home runs at least on the road with his power, not ten total. It was the most erratic .307 batting average in recent memory, with the lack of homers, only 72 RBI and far more strikeouts than usual. His approach going into the season is positive, and he certainly can do it and I expect him to be much better. But I tell ya,sonny...Ike Davis can't come quickly enough!

Well Saucy, Davis is very busy preparing for 2010, I'm thinking based on what I head last his time to coming to Flushing may have gotten closer yesterday.
A scout who has been watching Carlos Delgado play in the Puerto Rican Winter League are recommending he seek a DH job, as “he actually limps out there.”
He also said “He’s got no range at first — none…He can’t play first on a day-to-day basis. I think he can still DH, because he’s still got power. But to play first for a team like the Mets? Can’t see it.”

I am witing for Omar to react to this and bring Tatis in to platoon with Murphy
with Ike not to far behind. Gives me goosebumps :D

UAJock, About the only comment I could make about this threads popularity is that sports are not a big topic of discussion at JUB but there are a few Mets fans like myself who keep the sports pages buzzing, we comfort one another and keep baseball alive during the long cold summer. During the 2010 season, as I have for the last couple of years, will have a Mets 2010 thread keeping up with all the Mets action throughout the season.
As to Mike Piazza he left the Mets after the 2005 season, he joined the San Diego Padres in 2006 and then the Oakland Athletics in 2007. He retired in 2008 and did not play that year or since.

RazorzEdge88, that Braves rotation has been a killer for a while, Mets killers to be more exact. :help:

Well everyone today we step one step closer to baseball 2010 as the Mets conclude day one of their three-day mini camp in St. Lucie. One of highlights today was Johan Santana throwing off the mound for the first time since his surgery. Reports are that he looks “fit and mean” I don’t have to tell anyone reading this how important if not crucial for Johan to be healthy. The first reports coming out are that Santana threw a successful bullpen session. He started with some running and light tossing. But the real test came when our boy threw 24 pitches over six minutes and was seen laughing with Jerry Manuel and Omar Minaya after the session. Santana said he was “feeling good, what happened last spring had nothing to do with the surgery I had, I feel way ahead of what I was last year at this point. I can’t wait to be in spring training and see where we are at.’’
I dono about you guys but I am thrilled to hear that.

We will be able to see more of the mini camp on Mets Hot Stove with Kevin Burkhardt who will be reporting from Florida tonight during SNY’s SportsNite at 10 pm. I am sure Kevin will also have more on his Mets Stove report on Thursday as well.
We will also see Ollie Perez who a lot of us are wondering about for next year. The same scout who reported that Santana looked good said of Ollie, well….he grew a beard”

Always good to hear encouraging news this early in the almost spring, but alas, it is early. Better than, "well a little ache here, but just normal" crap we sometimes hear. Saw a Daily News story about the possibility of Smoltz being on Omar's radar. Oy vey, not another oldie but used to be goodie. Let's hope the spring news stays positive this year.

Interesting point UA Jock made about the Mets vs all the other sports related stuff going on or on the horizon. The Mets of course aren't chopped liver....they had a good run from 1997-2000 culminating in their WS loss to the Yankees in 2000,and was a team on the rise again 2005-2006 before their two ensuing pathetic September collapses and the debacle of injuries and lousy play last season.New York fans are truly passionate, and hell we really are the most consistently active thread in the sports forum...there are sports fans here, big time ones including huge baseball fans, but for some reason the Mets thread is the only team oriented regular season-playoffs sports thread that has caught on in any big way.

Would love to see more people posting threads about their favorite clubs or sports themes,be it baseball, basketball(which I love as well)football,hockey,Olympics...hell even NASCAR I guess is a sport!;)But this thread is great, and I appreciate sonny's passion in starting this one dedicated to our Mets and all those who participate here.

Anyway, the Mets won't be getting under Ben's Sheets now he's signed a one year,$10 mil deal with Oakland. We were WAY aggressive on that one,for real Omar Minaya now, weren't we?:rolleyes:At least we didn't get the mediocrity that is Jon Garland, who'll be letting down Padre fans next season. No improvement in catching, nor frontline pitching so far.Omar, you're really on a roll for your early run on as NL executive of the year!

I'm with you sonny regarding signing Fernando Tatis to platoon with Daniel Murphy.Though Daniel has worked hard in the postseason improving his timing and skills both offensively and defensively...and has built up strength, gaining five pounds of muscle and showing a competitive, dedicated, positive attitude in the minicamp.I don't think it would be out of the question he could be good enough not to require a platoon playing arrangement.I still think he can be a damn good player.Ike Davis is going to be tremendous when he comes up,can't wait but Daniel will give the Mets great depth and options.Damn I'm so-oo jealous sonny and Ike have actually met and conversed occasionally through sonny's Brooklyn Cyclone buddies!:cry:I know sonny is really proud he could see a potentially great new Met star from the beginning develop and shine:D

Glad to see Johann Santana looking good and feeling positive and healthy throwing easy and pain free. His loss last year was the most painful of all for the Mets and his health this year is an essential for the Mets to return to contention.Pelfrey has to show great strides recovering from the regression of last year, the inability to pitch with command and poise in crucial situations.John Maine has to regain the consistency, command and velocity he lost after the shoulder spur procedure of 2008 and his inability to recover fully from its effects and feel comfortable from its effects last season.Jon Niese and Fernando Nieve are two young pitchers last season who showed promise before terrible season ending injuries and it will be interesting to see if either can provide a realistically reliable option in the fourth and fifth spot in the rotation if no one is acquired through free agency or trade.Ollie Perez....if we have to count on anything from him,we're in trouble!:help:

Can't believe the A's signed Sheets, my thought is that they signed him for one year so they could trade him near the trade deadline for some prospects. THey arent' going to pay him $10 million, and let him walk without getting something in return. Also glad we stayed away from Garland.

Interesting take on Sheets, syam.Don't know if they can get that much for him at the deadline, seeing if he really proves healthy he won't re-sign with them, and teams won't give up top prospects in that case..but it's very plausible that is in their thinking at least to some extent.Oh,I am so happy that Garland is a Padre now.Pedro Martinez would be a more defensible risk than that overrated mediocrity.

I am as I have said before completely lost interest in what the Mets do with regard to the starting rotation. After we lost Pineiro it became clear we were not going to be aggressive and we would let em all get away. So now we are down to what, Smoltz?? Oh yeah that’s the way to go, why not.... Please. I would not have wanted to pay Sheets that kind of money, he is for all we know dead man walking and signing Garland would have put me to sleep. I am total agreement with Saucy and Syam about Garland he is trade bait, no way he stays and more no way they pay him 10 million
Unless Omar pulls something out of fat ass that I did not see coming we can expect the rotation to be Santana, Pelfrey, Maine, Perez and either Niese or Nieve
Jon Niese threw off a mound on Monday for the first time since he tore his right hamstring last August,. the report is that he was working at about 50 percent strength, but there's no reason to push it this early. But may mean the job could go to Nieve. Kevin Burkhardt tweets that Oliver Perez was "fired up" after throwing his first bullpen session on Tuesday he threw hard, but he is Ollie so it means nothing to me I still remember he finished 2009 with an ERA of 6.82. Oh yeah ....his knee had a boo boo
And we still don’t know who are primary catcher will be, will The Mets' sign free-agent catcher Yorvit Torrealba or Rod Barajas or go with what the Mets already have behind the plate.
I am comfortably numb now having yelled and screamed over the last couple of months over Omar and his lack of progress or is it interest in improving the club. So I give up, it’s fine, let’s stay with what we got. All the guys will be back healthy the pitching will work cause. Pelfrey and Maine will perform like never before, and I like both Niese and Nieve, so it could happen right??
As for Ollie, well.... so we loose every fifth game. :help:
Here is the question, who will be fired first, Omar or Jerry?

My thinking is that in July the A's will probably have paid him about 6 mil, new team only on the hook for 4 mil, if he's pitching well, the new team may want to sign him to an extension, plus willing to give up a little more to get him to put them into a playoff spot. All very speculative, I know, but the A's are not generally big spenders. The A's line is that he'll be a mentor to their young starters, very good thinking, but I say if the A's are not in contention, he'll be gone.

I am having a great time keeping up with the first sign of baseball with the mini camp.
Just to watch Santana throwing the ball laughing and joking around, the look on his face now that he knows he is able to do the things he could not do before his surgery is just a blast. It just makes me feel so good.
Other players who have been working out at the cap are Daniel Murphy, Chris Carter and Shawn Bowman.
Murphy talked about how he wanted to get to know Chip Hale, the team's new infield and third base coach. Murphy said he also was eager to get to Port St. Lucie for a few days because he was "getting stir crazy" in his home in Jacksonville, having not played winter ball for the first time as a professional. Murph said “Super Bowl Sunday can’t get here fast enough, I’m ready to get down here and get settled in.” Murphy also noted that it's easy for him to get to the complex since it's only a three-hour drive. “I could have biked it and got down here faster than some people,” Sure sounds like he is chompin at the bit to get started and ya gotta love that.
Murphy and HoJo had spent time this offseason together already, Daniel and. David Wright stayed in HoJo's home right after Thanksgiving and hit for a couple of days.
Murphy said his first full season definitely left room for improvement. And that he's focused on his footwork this winter. Jerry Manuel commented that he already likes how Murphy is aggressive turning 3-6-3 double plays as well as Murphy's range.
I was hoping Jose Reyes might show up, it sure would be nice to see him running. But so far we have not seen that much of him. I’m not reading all that much to that…I’m just sayin

So with Delgado not looking all that good (seen limping around a couple of times) it is looking good for Murphy to start the season at first. In addition the word is that the Mets are close to resigning Tatis who would of course platoon with Murphy. If that deals gets done, and it is expected in a day or so, it will for sure be the end of Delgado as a Met.

Yesterday I mentioned the fifth starting position as a possibility for Nieve but I forgot to mention Pat Misch, who is also being considered. Otherwise expect Misch as a lefty bullpen candidate, but Fernando Nieve is the fifth-starter frontrunner right now. Neise is in the mix as well but his recovery is going slowly perhaps too slowly.

You can catch Omar Minaya on with Kevin Burkhardt on tonight’s Mets Hot Stove on SNY. No real reason to watch him though cause all he will say is, you know, we are, you know, looking for, you know, ways to improve, you know, our club. Just for fun count the number of times he says “you know”
