New York Mets 2009-10 Winter report

Well, with the Mets having signed Coste and Blanco, joining Santos, I think they lead the league in backup catchers....

Keep in mind that Coste has so far only got a spot on the 40 man roster, he still has to make the team in spring training or he will be off to Buffallo.
As for Santos, with Blanco in Omir will be gone. Bye bye Santos.
I like Blanco, the Mets realise that a part of any pitching failures can be put on the catchers. Blanco calls a great game, and will be very good for Pelf and (God help us) Perez. Coupled that with his defensive skills and he is a good fit.
Still waiting for word on Molina, pretty sure he will be a Met in 2010.

Thole of course will be the Mets number one guy in AAA (he is doing very very well in Venezuela)and if Coste does not make the team he will join Josh in Buffalo which will be a very good thing for Josh, he can sure learn a lot from him.

I wanted to clarify something I wrote about Delgado not beng offered salary arbitration. Of course that dos not mean he won't be back, it just means he will name his price and the Mets will have to agree on that. He might not want to take a big salary cut, pride and all that stuff, so we will have to se how that plays out. Another important thing to remember is the Mets will be watching him very closely in winter ball and he had better be knocking them dead there if he ever has any chance at all at coming back.

Time to return to Mets players and my thoughts about them. Of course I begin with my man David Wright.

The first time I saw David Allen Wright was on July 21, 2004 (yup I remember the day) right from the start I knew he was going to be special. Soon we learned that oh yes David was going to be a superstar.
Wright was chosen by the Mets in the 2001 amateur draft during the supplemental round when the Mets lost Mike Hampton. He was on his way to superstardom in his first three years of minor league play, winning the Sterling award for best player on the class A St. Lucie in 2003. Then In 2004, he jumped quickly from AA Binghamton to the AAA Norfolk, to the major leagues. In his first season he batted .293, with 14 home runs and 40 RBIs, and was voted as Rookie of the Year

In 2005, David batted .306 with 27 home runs, 99 runs, 102 RBI, 42 doubles, and 17stolen bases, leading the team in average, runs, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, RBI, doubles, and finishing second in home runs. I think it was Cliff Floyd who was first. David was also in the top ten in the NL for average, hits, total bases, RBI, extra base hits, and runs. But his 24 errors tied him, I forget who, for the most errors by a third baseman in the major leagues.

In 2006, He was also named National League player of the month for June, that was the first time for a Met since Howard Johnson in 1991 David batted .327 with 10 home runs and 29 RBI.In2005 David batted .306 He was also voted on to his first MLB all Star game in ‘06 as the starting third baseman for the NL. During the 2006 season, our boy collected 74 RBI before the All-Star Break, breaking the Mets record previously held by Mike Piazza.

In 2007 (God I was so excited when this happened) Wright became the 29th player in baseball history to join the 30-30 club, and it happened against the Phillies which just made it all that sweeter. And the hits just kept on coming, David was awarded the 2007 Gold Glove and the Silver Slugger Award at third base. He batted.325 in 2007

In 2008, Wright hit the first walk of home run of his career, and also scored the game winning run in the bottom of the ninth in the same game against the Braves That same year Wright was announced as the recipient of the Rawlings' Gold Glove Award for third basemen. It was the second consecutive year in which David won the award. He also won his second Silver Slugger award. David batted .302 in 2008

2009 was not a good year for David even though he batted .307. Only 10 home runs and his strikeouts were off the charts, he just seemed to have lost his swing. Even his fielding was way below the Gold Glove standard. I blame his struggles at bats to his swing, He seemed to lost it in his approach, I don’t think he was afraid of getting being beat but because of all the injuries he was never really protected all that well in ’09. Pitchers took full advantage of that and challenged him outside. He seemed not to trust himself and as he had done before hit the ball late and go over to his sweet spot to right field. David has the mind set to hit every pitch that way, no matter where the pitch is thrown he knew to fight it off and shoot everything the other way. We did not se that in ’09.
I hope I am clear to those of you who may not play a lot of ball. The idea is you have to visualize the ball coming on the outer part of the plate, then instead of making contact out front (pull it) which would send the ball up the middle you need to hit the ball just a bit deeper in the zone, when David did that in the past he would have a nice line drive to right field. David knows this, trust me, he knows this, so what happened. What I see is all of a sudden he has holes in his swing, and trouble going the other way, it did not take pitchers long to see that.

So that’s you lesson for the day kiddies if you wanna hit the ball well, keep your hands inside and fight of the pitch and wait on the pitch just a little longer and make contact deeper in the zone.

David will be fine in 2010, he is working on his mechanics, and approach, he hopefully will have less internal pressure, protection in the lineup, and plate discipline. There is no reason to believe that David will not be back strong in2010. I refuse to say there is something wrong with Wright. He had a bad year in terms of power because of a combination of the reasons I have written about. Things that can be easily fixed with some time with Ho Jo in Florida, and having guys back like Beltran in the lineup. With other hitters around him, Wright can relax and tighten his strike zone again. The rest will follow.

His defense bugs me a bit and yes worries me as well. He for sure took a step back. Half of his 18 errors came on throws He botched a mess of ground balls too and while that ain't really terrible I worried about his range.

Look for David to return strong I 2010 with 30-HR, 100+ RBI’s.

At the winter meetings Lots of talks but not much done yet which does not surprise or worry me. I am not a big Omar Minaya fan but I will say that in the past he has come through.
I am sure he is not letting anyone (the fans) pressure him into making a deal just for the sake of making a deal.

I do expect the Molina deal to be made very soon, a move I am very much in favor of.
I also expect a pitching move, that goes without saying. Omar and just about everyone else knows we need a second starter. I am not going to go into all the rumors and could happens cause they make me dizzy. I only want to discuss what is real and happing for sure. Omar is very patient and will not make a deal in any rush or be forced into making a deal just because everyone else is.
I like that!
Many deals will be made between now and spring raining not necessary during the winter meetings.
Relax everyone we will be a player on the big free agents that era out there.

David Wright and Daniel Murphy are Back home after spending a week with Howard Johnson and working out at the team's Port St. Lucie complex. Jeff Francoeur had planned to go along as well but his thumb is still healing from the surgery so he did not make it down.

Josh Thole is home from his Winter League team in Venezuela, he wanted to rest in December. Josh could have stayed until the 4th of January, but he wants to start prepping himself to try and win a job with the Mets in the spring. Josh played really well hitting .380 with 16 doubles, 2 triples, 3 homeruns, and 28 RBI’s, he also kept his strikeouts down to 13, reports are that although his offense was impressive he needs work on defense.
Go get em Josh.

I had heard that Brian Schneider was going to the Nationals but now it seems he has signed a deal with Philadelphia Phillies. Did the Phillies watch him last year?

The only thing to come out of the winter meetings for the Mets was a deal that was offered to Benji Molina and Jason Bay. The Bay offer was a little sweeter than the one offered by Boston which Jason turned down, so we will see if he ends up a Met. I prefer Bay to Holliday, both guys were pretty much on par as far as defense goes but Bay is a pull hitter as opposed to Holliday who is a gap hitter, Bay has the power we need especially in Citi Field. I am not like some people I spoke with a worked up because the Mets went first to catching and left field instead of what they need most of all and that of course is pitching. I have no doubt that the pitcher will come maybe over the next week or two maybe a bit longer. *whispers* Lackey
Omar is just waiting in the bushes to see what shakes out and then he will make his move. A lot of people were surprised at the Randy Wolff deal and how well he did, it sorta changed the overall thinking I bet. I am sure a lot of ground work has been done, Trust Omar to get it done! Meantime the Bay opportunity came along and the offer was made. I hope we get Bay but Holliday is still of course very much in the mix. There is another reason for my interest in a power hitter cause it helps Daniel Murphy. With a bat like Bay’s in the lineup the Mets can be more comfortable about Murphy at first. OF course we still don’t know if Delgado will be back I have heard little of how he is doing. But to me having Bay or Holliday at left takes a bit of the pressure off Murph.
Daniel was just beginning to break out offensively in September, he led the team in home runs, hopefully he will return to having the patience at the plate he had early on but then got anxious, and I would hate to see him wasting away on the bench.

Bottom line for me is getting a second starter, a catcher and left fielder. THAT’S IT!
I have never thought we need much more providing all the boys come back healthy.

The Nats already got Pudge. ;) .

Pudge will be very good for the Nats, he is a Future Hall of Famer with at least 10-12 Gold Gloves. Far better offensive player than Schnider, although I did like Schnider’s abilities behind the plate especially calling games for the younger guys, but his at bats had really sucked in ’09.

In other Mets happenings it is looking like Tim Redding and Jeremy Reed will not be tendered contracts. But rumors about a trade aside it’s looking like John Mane will be tendered a contract
as will Feliciano (no surprise there) and of course Francoeur.

Still waitin on news about the Jason Bay offer. but we did hear yesterday, after the Mets offer, that he does not want to play in San Francisco. and the Red Sox do not appear interested in upping their offer from four to five years. The Mets' contract is a lot like the four-year deal Bay received from Boston and since he rejected that offer, the Mets may have to consider five years. But if they do
I doubt it will be guaranteed. I would bet the Mets offer is back loaded, which basically means he will see most of his money towards the end of the contract

Elmer Dessens has signed a minor-league contract, he will be added to the 40–man roster.

The White Sox and J.J Putz have agreed to a one-year contract.

I see where Matt Capps was non-tendered by the Pirates. He might be worth the Mets while to sign for right handed set up work in 7th/8th innnings. He has closed before, albeit with mixed results, but he's still young enough, 26, and might bounce back with good results.

Good to hear your thoughts syam
I think the Pirates non tendered Capps because he was no longer worth the money he would have gotten. As you wrote, Capps has been slipping in performance and even though his fastball is still very good his so-so changeup has left him vulnerable to left-handed hitters, who by the way ate him alive last year. I think his ERA in ’09 was close to 6 and that ain’t good. So, like you also wrote, he could end up a set up man now. But I am not all that interested in him, we don’t need his inconsistency now, we need more reliability in our pitching. A team he could fit in with might be the Cubs, I don’t think they are looking for a closer, but Capps, as you suggested, could fit in late-inning relief along with Angel Guzman

Meantime while we wait for news on Jason Bay, the Mets are making more room for him in the outfield by not tender contracts to Jeremy Reed and Cory Sullivan, this along with pitchers Tim Redding and Lance Broadway. So now we have reduced the number of players on the 40-man roster to 35 and made those guys each eligible for salary arbitration, free agents who of course can re-sign with the Mets.

It is not looking good for the Mets and the hopes of getting John Lackey. He is so close to a deal with the Red Sox. In fact he is taking a physical for the team today, which usually means a deal is close and prettyy much in the final stages.
So if The Mets decided last week to pursue Jason Bay instead of Lackey, with the idea that if Bay re-signed with the Red Sox or signed with another team, they could still go after Lackey, now what??

Well I guess it's back to Holliday. Maybe we could actually end up with that one-two punch of Santana and holliday after all ;)

Good news and bad news, boys.Good news is Cliff Lee was traded to Seattle from the Phillies as part of a three way trade.Bad news is Toronto was the other part of that trade, and it looks like Phillies get Roy Halladay ,with prospects filling out the rest of the trade. At least the Phils don't have Cliff Lee to make the rotation completely devastating to the Mets. But the Mets have to step up.Fucking get Jason Bay....they won't get Lackey now he's with Boston so fucking step up for Mets fans who have been let down since 2006 and losing the NLCS to the Cardinals.Fuck second tier guys.....you think Jason Bay is a better fit than Mark Holliday, get off your asses and ink him ASAP!Make a goddamn statement you're going to walk the walk and fucking compete for the title....Atlanta,Florida...they aren't merely going away and Washington may be a big problem in the not so distant future. So go out and prove you want to win, enough talk from Omar Minaya and the Wilpons about it!

With Mike Cameron about to sign with the Bosox, it reallly opens the door for the Mets and Bay, providing the Angels or Mariners don't beat them to the punch.

First up let me clear up my Santana/ Holliday remark, obviously I meant Halladay
I get a little bat shit nutz keeping those two names straight.
It should be easy cause I have zero interest in Holliday.

So as expected Lacky went to the Sox, which is sad news for us but bad news for the Yankees.
As for Halladay I never really expected to land him. First of all the Jays wanted Reyes in the deal and second he did not to play for the Mets. BUT the Phillies??? ](*,)Come on..That’s just cruel.
If there is a bright side I guess as I wrote before Bay is now less likely to be on the Red Sox now that they signed lackey, so our chances for him have improved, our only threat would come from the Angels, but I think they, as we should be, are more interested in pitching. The Mets suddenly seemed more interested in slugging than pitching which I do not understand at all. They must know something I don’t cause the current rotation ain’t gonna cut it. I do not know, now that we lost those two guys, who in the hell is going to be a force to deal with the Phillies or the NL east for that matter. Marquis? Well…if we could get rid of Ollie for him.
I am more than a little disappointed in Omar so far he better do something and do it fast.

The Mets have their annual holiday party for children today. Jeff Francoeur will be Santa and a couple of his elves are Jose Reyes, Angel Pagan, Jon Niese and Bobby Parnell. handing out the presents. Hope to have pictures tomorrow. Let’s face it, after the news yesterday, as they say in the song, “we need a little Christmas, right this very minute”

For pitching,I'd like to see the Mets go after Ben Sheets should he prove recovered from surgery.Jose Pineiro,Bronson Arroyo,Aaron Harang,Jon Garland don't do it for me.Not when the Mets need a quality2-3 guy above and beyond a competent4-5.Even Marquis.....he's been mediocre for his career and to expect him to be more than a serviceable 4-5 would be wishful thinking.Sheets is wonderful when healthy, good control and competitiveness but at best with his health issues he warrants a year and an option.

Sonny, syam I am afraid the Mets are primed to shoot themselves in the foot again if they hardheadedly assume Jason Bay will not get a fifth year from anyone...see in the papers one says they're being stubborn sure no one will offer a fifth year, the other saying they are flexible about it.Well for fuck's sake they better flex fast and get moving as Bay appears to want to sign with someone by tomorrow. If he slips out of their grasp,I don't want to hear any sorry thing from Minaya or Wilpon about how the Mets will be a better club by spring training.

Didn't think the Mets would just give up on Jose Reyes, even for Roy Halladay and the truth is,had they really wanted to go after him the names Ike Davis and Brad Holt or Jennry Mejia would be prominently dangled and at this stage the Mets can ill afford to lose their best prospects with such a weak prospect level in their organization. And Reyes himself will be challenged to live up to his potential this year or find himself someone else's heartless tease but he does deserve this opportunity.Jon Niese,Fernando Nieves,John Maine,Mike Pelfrey...one or hopefully more HAVE to step up and give the Mets a reliable rotation guy whatever other pitching moves the Mets do.

To have Cliff Lee out of the picture in Philly being sent to Seattle in the Halladay blockbuster eases the pain of the Mets, but Halladay has a better track record and if Cole Hamels regains his confidence and the young pitching stud AJ Happ excels as expected as a starter the Mets will be in for a tough fight indeed. As presently consatituted, the Phillies lineup alone with their talent, dedication and heart by itself scares me and should petrify the Mets.

No pictures of Santa Jeff Francouer and his helping elves from the annual Christmas event?I'd love to sit on his lap and ask for a special present!:twisted:I know,sonny....just can't help myself.!oops! He couldn't make it down to Florida with new buddy David Wright to work with Howard Johnson on batting techniques as he still needed time to have his thumb ligament heal from surgery but apparently will be going there to work with HoJo shortly. Here's hoping Jeff,a real good character guy and a pleasant surprise acquisition in a season to forget builds on his positive contributions and sticks it to Atlanta which had gotten so puzzlingly down on him.

I spent last night at a sports bar I love and watched a lot of news about what is going on in the wake of the winter meetings. There really is a lot of trading, acquiring and general activity going on except with one team in particular, THE NEW YOR METS.](*,)
During at least two hours of sports talk the Mets were only mentioned once and pretty much the conversation went around what the heck is Omar doing anyway? He promised something big will come and told us Mets fans to “be patient”. Well Omar, that’s getting harder and harder to do as everyday goes by and so many teams are making deals and improving themselves while the Mets do so little. All we have going so far is a maybe-could be-who the fuck knows deal with Jason Bay who has said that he doesn't want to return to Boston. Well Boston does not want him either they have Mike Cameron now. Supposedly the Mets are now considering giving him five years FIVE YEARS!! Why, so in 2013 we can watch him bumbling around in left field and we can wonder how did we .lock up that guy for so long. Oh, wait, I get it, Omar needs to do anything he can at this point cause Bay is all he has managed to at least almost get. But wait there is more madness, Bay is thinking six years. So what if we loose Bay? Well its back to Holliday. But the Cards have said they might go eight years to have him back. Bay or Holliday it has to Bay but under reasonable terms and certainly not five years much less six.
Then there is Bengie Molina, we haven’t even been able to get that done. And now Benjie wants three years, so they just sit there and stare at each other waiting for the other to blink.
Bay and Molina both need to settle down and take more reasonable offers form the Mets cause look over your shoulder guys, there ain’t nobody there chasing after you. I do not want Omar to bid against himself.
Omar, two words, Free Agents ya got nothing to trade. Do something now!
Speaking of free agents Minaya is still going to Puerto Rico in the next week or so to watch Delgado. Maybe if what he sees is good Omar will try and pull off another Pedro Martinez deal, get Carlos cheap. It could happen cause there is not a lot of interest out there for him, there are more free agents out there so Carlos might be willing to come back to NY for the cheap.

Meantime I wait for my blackberry to give me some good news,

I mentioned Jeff Francouir playing Santa in yesterdays Christmas party, check him out.
David Wright is home in Virginia and did not attend the party, but here is a great shot of David and his good buddy and card playing partner Jeff.

I think the Jason Bay deal will work itself out for the Mets. No way I give Molina 3 years, 2 is stretching it with Thole in the wings. Pitching wise, perhaps Omar has a deal of some sort in the works, who knows, Marquis or Piniero would be serviceable in the rotation, especailly at Citi Field. Marquis's early years were in homer friendly parks in Atlanta and Chitown. He eats up a lot of innings. I was shocked at his effectiveness in Colorado last year. Home town guy would probably be worth signing in my eyes. Let's hope for a couple of Mets presents under the tree.....

Molina wants three years? He's good offensively but has regressed defensively, and I agree syam going two years with rapidly improving Josh Thole knocking at the door makes little sense as well. There are definitely more cost effective options the Mets should pursue at catcher instead of overpaying for someone they really only need to hold the fort for a year so Thole can get more experience(don't forget he is a converted catcher and still needs work defensively)There is talk by some, and I'd love to hear sonny's perspective on this that the Mets should go for more affordable serviceable parts and stay clear of Jason Bay or Matt Holliday for the stronger class of free agents next year.As much as a Joe Mauer or Carl Crawford or Cliff Lee intrigues me,the Mets are not in a position with their fan base to make promises who knows they can keep.I know neither Jason Bay or Holliday are that good with the glove, but they need a reliable, productive bat and both are very good, productive hitters who fill a need for pop in the lineup.Bay looks the likeliest target of the organization... is a good baserunner and despite a lot of strikeouts is a strong clutch hitter with mostly pull power that seems a better bet the way CitiField penalizes power hitters who hit a lot of balls to right center.Great clubhouse guy and plays hard,so imperfect as he is defensively the Mets need what he can offer driving in runs and going all out.

The pitching has to be addressed too...signing that Japanese reliever may be a good move but another high level starter is essential with the Mets being so shaky after Johann Santana(his injuries even dropped him down a couple of pegs last year).Pelfrey if anything regressed and showed an alarming laack of mental toughness.John Maine has toughness but hasn't come back cleanly from his 2008 shoulder surgery and his velocity has been down more often than not,as well as his sharpness just isn't there.Oliver Perez is Oliver Perez,a mistake Omar Minaya will not live down soon.Talented but clueless about what it takes to win, coasting on talent not working on bettering his control and boosting his effectiveness.Others have done so,but hurt or not,the only thing we will get from Ollie consistently is a seductive tease for awhile and unfathomable implosions at the worst possible times.Jon Niese and Fenando Nieve gave tantalizing hints at times before their ill fated injuries took them out of the picture so you don't know what you're going to get,if anythng. It should take them some time to show sharpness and consistency after their long layoffs.

Thanks sonny for the Santa Francouer pics, wish we could see our David Wright around but I know he'll be ready come February to regain his consistency on the field.Such a weird season for him...hit ,302 with close to 40 doubles, stole bases more aggressively last year than the previous one and was very strong defensively. But he was maddeningly inconsistent...did not do well in clutch situations, struck out 160 times(he had been pretty consistently betwwen 110-120 his previous seasons)had such wild disparities where he would hit so well and just go into puzzling droughts, and had a power shortage where he went from being at least a 30 homer threat to only hitting 10 and driving in like 65 last season. It was like CitiField psyched him out.He will I'm certain come into the new season with a determination to get back to the dominant offensive player he has always been until the disastrous performance of 2009.Where everything that could possibly go wrong(and some things Mets fans just couldn't see coming in the most mortifying ways)just played out.

One more thing...Jason Marquis had a pretty good season last year for the Rockies but has, despite his dedication and durability been consistently mediocre before then.Love the fact he's a local kid who has made a good living playing MLB.Very promising coming up with the Braves, but at best for the Mets a fourth or fifth starter and they have enough of those already...the only name I'm remotely liking is Ben Sheets, who is coming of elbow surgery and would be a very interesting gamble because healthy he is a solid 2-3 guy,the best available now that the Red Sox have grabbed John Lackey.Still a gamble though....don't know if at least starting pitching wise, the Mets will give much of a sense of comfort and optimism for their fans who really need and deserve it.

Terrific post saucy I love the stuff you write
You asked about what I thought with respect to Thole. I have written about him many times in this thread and my mind has not changed, he needs to pay at least part of 2010 in Buffalo. The kid is moving to fast jumping from A-ball in 2008 to MLB in 2009. His offense was impressive in ’09 and I liked the way he called games. But I did notice his inability to recognize bad pitches (did you notice that?) and he for sure had problems blocking balls at times. His defense is what I feel he needs to work on and why I want him in AAA he has problems throwing out runners and his arm strength is pretty good but not great. He simply needs more time behind the plate and some instruction to develop; I think it’s best for everyone if he spends another year in minors, to continue honing his craft.
Wouldn’t it be better if Thole force the Mets to promote him rather than the other way around?

As for Igarashi I Do no much about him but I am told he’s got a power arm and an outstanding split-finger (fastball) Our 2010 set up man position without Putz was in question and more in place now and I like that. But I gotta see him pitch before I write much more about him. Looks good though to fill the role of eighth-inning setup man for Francisco Rodriguez.

Syam, There is still no news on Bay but last night I got a message about Johnny Damon. Apparently Damon and the Yankees are in some kind of standoff and Damon is ready to explore his other options. There are those who are telling me he might be talking to the Mets. Last night, the Yankees and Nick Johnson came to terms on a one year contract which seems to me to be bye bye to Damon since Johnson would serve as the Yankees’ designated hitter and prolly hit second in the batting order, which was Damon’s spot last season.

Sooooo do we want Damon?????

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVID WRIGHT

My boy's birthday today

Damn, thanks for reminding me sonny! And God,David's always hot!(!)He can even make scruff rock!:gogirl:Though not that unfortunate t-shirt sonny posted David wearing some months back!:lol:Congrats to our Birthday boy and hoping for a World Series title as the ultimate present!..|

Well here we are in day 13 of the Mets and Bay staring each other with one waiting for the other to blink.
Same story with Molina. I can not imagine what is going on anymore; neither of those guys has all that much in the way of options and are going to have to cave soon. The advantage for us is that the longer the wait the cheaper we will get both of them. But if we lose Bay then what? The Mets have taken the crazy wacked out approach of concentrating on an offense player and doing nothing where we need help the most, PITCHING! ](*,)
Now another pitcher is gone with Marquis going to the Nationals. Please don’t tell me we end up with Piniero. Perhaps our best option now would be Ben Sheets, maybe Wong or Garland for the end of the rotation My worry for Sheets is his health, he’s good but will he stay healthy. Things are so desperate now for the Mets as far as pitching goes that people are reporting they may be interested in bringing Pedro back. Good Grief NO, the man did perform well for the Phillies but he only pitched like every two weeks, he can not be counted on to pitch regularly, no way I want him back. I doubt the Mets are seriously considering that either.

Interesting turn of events with Carlos Delgado who may have suffered a major setback yesterday.
He is out of winter league ball until mid-January. Why? We don’t know yet, but if he is injured again or that hip is acting up, he is done.
