New York Mets 2009

What is going on with Santana?

Sundays outing was the worst of his career. There has been talk and speculation about what his problem is almost to the point of nausea.
The fact is Johan has not really pitched like the ace that he is over the last three outings, but yesterday was a shocker. Johan insists that he is fine and went on to say that just because he had pitched so well the beginning of the season that he is expected to pitch that well all year. Well I agree that he will have his bad days of course he will. But Johan also claims that his fast ball has not lost velocity. Now I am here to tell you that Johan is in denial abut that cause it most certainly has. I watched all of his pitches
In yesterdays game twice and saw a definite decrease in his velocity. What I see is only a couple of MPH on the fast ball but that’s enough to affect his changeup as well. Reason is when his fast ball losses speed it catches up to the speed of his changer up, it just has to. That’s why the Yankees were getting the bat on the ball as often rather than swing and miss cause the batters are able to just get enough on the ball. So why the decrease in velocity? Well I am sure Santana and Warthan know but they ain’t talking. Manual I am sure knows as well. He ain’t talking either. All Jerry said was Johan would be fine and even he said he did not see a change in Johan’s velocity. That statement tells me one of two things, jerry is not paying attention or he is nor being completely honest. My money is on the later. Johan did complain of a blister on his finger hat could have contributed to it of course but I am not so sure it would have affected him that much. I don’t see the problem as mechanics, cause if it was a stud like Johan would have adjusted for that by now. I do not believe it to be anything to worry about but something is defiantly up.
Unless we hear some new news over the next couple of days that indicated some sort of physical problem with Johan, (the Mets have a habit of hiding that sort of thing),
I expect to see a complete turn around in his next start and Johan will be back strong. It’s Johan for heavens sake, he is best pitcher in the game today he knows he has a problem and he WILL fix it and fix it quickly.

I keep hearing conflicting reports as to weather or not Gary Sheffield will have an MRI on that knee that had bothering him. I can not imagine just watching him run why he would not have the test. Have the test Gary!!!!

Nothing new on Santana, I just keep waiting for that show to drop that tells us something is wrong with him. But I am feeling good about the very good chance that it is just a temporary situation and that he fine. I keep thinking more and more about that blister on his finger which would certainly create a problem for him throwing the ball.
Question, why did he pitch if he knew it would affect his game?
Answer, Johan “I am a man” Santana would never allow something like a sore finger keep him from getting into the game. He is that fierce competitor. Johan is scheduled to pitch again on Saturday against the Rays.

Voting for the position players in the 2009 All-Star Game concludes on July 2nd.
As it stands right now, David Wright leads all National League third basemen with 1,256,736 votes, which is roughly 336,000 more than his buddy Ryan Zimmerman.
Carlos Beltran is hanging on to the third outfield spot, edging out Alfonso Soriano by only 27,000 votes.

Joe Buck has a new show on HBO, it premiered last night and had a pre taped interview with D Wright. David has done Letterman and the Daily Show and is always fun to see in that off the field type of format. Repeats all week.

Tonight The Mets play the Orioles, it will be Pelfrey against Guthrie.

Let's just hope the Mets are prepared to play against the Orioles. They can hit the hell out of the ball sometimes. Glad I was out of town for this past weekend's debacle.

It's about time the Mets benefitted from smeone else's mistakes. Those two extra runs off Aubrey Huff's error n David Wright's pop fly to right were crucial to getting the win as the Mets wound up with a 6-2 lead instead of Baltimore getting out of the seventh with the score still remaining 4-2.The O's added two runs in the ninth, which would have put the Mets in another tenuous situation had they not benefitted from the error by Huff.

Interesting observations....the Mets broadcasters were getting on Brian Roberts, saying the pop fly off of Wright was in his territory,he should have aggressively gone after it and seemed to want no part of it.He did look in replays he could have reached the ball....the broadcasters thought Huff caught a bad break,But yet he did misplay it.

David Wright could be seen in the dugout clearly in animated discussion with Mike Pelfrey after breezing through the game, just losing focus and giving up a two run homer to Nick Markasis and getting pulled by Jerry Manuel.

The focus was on how despite their closeness as friends,as a person taking more responsibility as a team leader David Wright wasn't afraid to get into Mike Pelfrey's face and let him have it on his loss of focus and concentration. He gave him a supportive back pat later, but David left no doubt he was taking it upon himself to try to help steer Mike Pelfrey right.

Not that impressed with last night win, the Orioles pretty much gave the game away with those errors. Once again Mets not running out pop ups or advancing the bases (D Wright) But like they say a win is a win. They played Camden yards which is a total home run ball park, but not for the Mets I guess.

Pelfrey melted down to a pool of goo once again in the 6th. Totally losing his command, but he got the win.
Saucy mentioned D Wright confronting Pelf in the dugout, which is something David does a lot, it is just usually in the clubhouse or somewhere off the field and away from the cameras, cause that is what David prefers to do. Some were surprised to see David do that with Pelf but I was not cause I know he has done that with other players many times. David did talk about the incident with pelf, he said “Sometimes I have to be a little more aggressive with Palfrey than other guys because he gets a little complacent or passive; It wasn’t really getting in his face or getting on him. It was more, ‘I think he’s got the kind of stuff to take that next step up. Right now, he’s been good. But I think he’s got a chance to really take it up a notch. I just want to make sure he’s not satisfied with what he did tonight — that he can take it up a notch.”
Gotta love David, well at least I know I do. ;)

I was more impressed with Sean Green who has really been getting the job done lately. He has not allowed a single run in June and his ERA has dropped to 2.04
Bobby Parnell had a bad outing but no sweat, he is better than that and shit does happen.

Fernando Martinez did little to help his cause last night, he is currently .222 and is clearly overmatched.
Daniel Murphy blew a chance to show some spark against the righty last night, but did not. He is .238 now.
Both theses kids have been disappointments. I think they will hang on to Murph but Martinez will go back to the minors, just my gut on that. I still think Murph is gonna be a stud soon. He will bust out maybe not this year or even next but he will bust out and become a major player.

John Maine and Oliver Perez are going to play in a controlled game in Port St. Lucie in extended spring training Johnny is expected to activated after that, which could mean goodbye to Fernando Nieve, after he pitches Friday against the Rays. Perez will prolly begin pitching in minor league games after that. So we could see him again in about three more weeks. IF he does well.
Meanwhile I have been writing about Billy Wagner’s return and now he has said that he could be pitching two innings in the major leagues in about a month, leaving open the possibility that Billy could return to the Mets in mid August..

Wednesday was the one-year anniversary of Willie Randolph’s firing.

Tonight it’s Tim Redding against faces Koji Uehara

A very pedestrian win last nite, taking advantage of the O's errors, which is a good thing. Pelfrey seemed to lose it in a hurry after being in control for 5 solid innings. Bullpen did pretty well, except for Parnell. His fastball is good, but seems to lack any movement, a major leaguer will hit a straight 96-97 mph fastball. Living in Md, I get the Orioles feed of the game, and they too, put a lot of blame on Roberts for not getting to the popup that Huff muffed. The O's announcers are Gary Thorne and Jim Palmer, no slouches at the mike. Tonite could be a slugfest with Redding and the Japanese guy, Uehara. Rain is in the forecast....Let's Go Mets!!

I know how much sonny loves David Wright!:DDavid has that effect on Mets fans, especially die hard fans like us!;)

Shows the kind of team leader he's growing into.I don't see anyone else who could be comfortable in that role with the Mets....not Delgado, not Beltran, not Jose Reyes.Because he's not an every day layer, not even Johann Santana.

Thanks syam for the Baltimore perspective on the Huff miscue....that their play by play guys felt pretty much the same way that Roberts should have been much more assertive getting to the play instead of backing off essentially and leaving it to Aubrey Huff.

It was a gift win, unimpressive essentially but a win.Tonight Mets were just plain shitty.....Redding was very mediocre,Feliciano just didn't have it.....even David Wright looked bad, hitless and leaving four runners on base. The less said about it,the better. It just gets frustrating.Something Mets fans have unfortunately become all too used to.

At least Daniel Murphy lashed three hits, something encouraging.I'm with sonny about still believing Murphy will be the real deal as a hitter....provided they stick to their supposed plan to phase him in as Carlos Delgado's replacement next year and don't go out and get a first baseman in a panic move.Better go for an outfield bat,let Fernando Martinez get at bats at Triple A(in the right deal, for a young veteran type frontline bat or starting pitcher,I'd even include him in a trade package).

If the Mets haven't fucked up being in contention by August I'd keep Billy Wagner for the rest of the year(provided his good health and having good velocity after fully rehabbing his elbow)You can never have enough premium left handed throwing arms in the heat of a pennant/wild card chase.

Gosh Saucy where ever did you get the idea I love David Wright???

NO, last nights 0-5 and strikeouts is not the beginning of another slump for D Wright as I have already read today. [-X

I too was happy to see Murph bustin, jus give him time is all I’m sayin.
Fernando Martinez had a couple of good at bats but what happened in the outfield? Shudda made that catch should not have been a home run. Dazed and confused if ya ask me.

Tim Redding wasn’t terrible but did not have it last night, not at all. He seemed to be trying out a cutter which he has not mastered at all.
Bobby Parnell bounced back from Tuesday knocking off the three batters he faced.
I was more upset with Feliciano giving it up to two lefties, a single to Markakis and a two-run home run to Huff. Surprising since Pedro is our lefty killer, he is .125 against lefties. He shudda threw a slider to Huff which you will noticed is what Schneider called for. Instead he threw what kinda looked like a cutter but more like a bad slider that missed the spot. Oh well, shudda-woulda-coulda I guess.

Big weekend coming up for me, the Brooklyn Cyclones open the ’09 season Friday.
We play the SI Yankees and there is an intense rivalry between theses two teams I can’t wait to see play out. Last year, the Cyclones didn’t even make the New York-Penn League playoffs, the Yanks, or baby Bombers, beat em in the McNamara Division by four games. Actually the Cyclones haven’t won it all since their first season which was in 2001.
There is a new coaching staff I will need to get to know, especially manager Pedro Lopez, who I hear is a great teacher. My main man Brad Holt, but I am thrilled to know he is now at AA Binghamton where he is tearin it up. Also missing this year is Scott Shaw, who got promoted as well, he is in Luice’s Florida State League. A lot of studs have come from the Cyclones, like Murphy, Pagan, and Eddie Kunz.

What I love about watching theses games is the level they play at, some of my friends don’t like to go theses games cause they think it’s like little league. But lemme tell you it’s not at all like that, it is far closer to major league ball than many think, it’s more like highest level college ball.

Last year I saw a lot of pitchers throw 90-plus heat, a smart infield turning some awesome double-plays and even some outfielders throw out runners like the pros. There is an excitement that I can not explain when you watch theses kids play, you want so much for them to do well and they work so darn hard it just makes me fl so good watchin them. Of course I am always on the look out for the next Holt, or Mejia I am looking forward to watching a kid I have heard a lot of good things about by the name of Angel Cuam We have a closer by the name of Mike powers who was impressive last year, he will be back and I am looking for him getting the saves again. Complementing the pitchers is a kid named Dock Dole who I only got a taste of at the end of ’08, he impressed me and I am looking to see him have a great season. You know me I am all about the pitchers and catchers. ;)

So me and the boys will be headin over to Brooklyn Friday night for the start of another season with my Cyclones.

With all the hot teams the Mets were scheduled to meet over theses next few weeks, the Orioles were the one team we were supposed to beat, or at least manage 2 outta 3. But NOOOOO we let that slip away and now the really big guns are a-commin. Even reliable K-Rod has not been getting it done and last night was prolly his worst. A BASES LOADED WALK??? ](*,) HUFF WINNING THE GAME AGAIN??? #-o

Hey Saucy I am glad to see you are board with Billy Wagner coming back. A lot of guys do not want him back but that’s just nutz, we could of course use his left arm in maybe the 7th or even the 8th. Providing he is healthy. I am hoping for him to return and show what he is made of. Good luck Billy.

Philly’s got shut out and have lost Ibanez for a couple of weeks. Oh boo hoo, ain’t that a shame.
Get well Ibanez just not until after the Mets meet up with the Phillies again ;)

Joihn Maine threw a bit and said he felt a pinch nerve in his shoulder, so he will not be back after the 15 days. Don’t expect him now for at least two weeks, he can not pitch well with that nerve bothering him at all, it is in his shoulder it would affect his slider. Prolly could pitch a changeup but he does not do that all that well.
WTF is up with that guy anyways.

Martinez (I refuse to call him K-Mart) was moved down to the 8 spot last night and did not do much. Next spot the Minors, which would be good for the kid, cause he is not ready for the Majors. Let him get some full time playing time and improve his skills.

I wanted to do a follow up on Nick Evans, as I told you guys he had pretty much fell completely apart after he was sent down to make room for Sheffield. Nick had a tough tome adjusting and went to a sports psycoligist. The good news is Nick has been playing much better now and is on his way back. Yesterday he hit his third homer with Bingingham. Great to hear that, keep it goin Nick.

The Mets and Rays tonight with Nieve taking on Sonnanstine.
The Brooklyn Cyclones meet up with the SI Yankees

Let’s go Mets and Cyclones!

I did not see the game last night I had gone to Brooklyn to se my beloved Cyclones opener. I kept in touch following the game and have it saved on my DVR to check out later.

Looks like it was another great outing for Fernando Nieve ho went six innings giving up only one run on three hits. So excited to see the bottom half of the rotation performing so well. A major and refreshing change from last season, for sure.
Frankie bounced back and became K-Rod again. But then there was little doubt that he would.

Daniel Murphy had a great night as well, and his ole buddy and ex roommate Nick Evans returned to the lineup Yesterday I wrote about how Nick Evans had turned things around after his meltdown and was tearin it up again. Well he got his rewards cause as you know he got the promotion to replace Martinez who as we thought was sent back to the minors. I have not seen the game yet but I guess Manual did not play Nick at all last night not even to pinch hit. So maybe tonight we will see him again. I dono how much playin time Nick will get but he could share first with Murphy and Tatis and help out on left with Sheffield. In any event it is only temporary till Angel Pagan comes back in about a week or two. Then Nick will go back.

Meanwhile back in Brooklyn The Cyclones had great pitching yesterday and I mean GREAT pitching beating the SI Yankees 6-2. Most of the runs were unearned including a run that scored on a balk. In fact the Yankees played very bad defense, even got a little good natured razing from the fans.
The starter Collin McHugh allowed five or six hits and two runs and pitched 5 innings, next up was a kid named Carrillo (s) who gave up only one hit in three innings, I think he had three strikeouts. Got to see saver Mike Powers and though he gave up one hit was as outstanding as he always is.
The was a Huge crowd, sold out lots of guys standing, musta been close to 10,000 people there.
Opening ceremonies were kinda lame with people imitating Joan Rivers, Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson, and I think so dude who was supposed to be Deniro, could done with out that.

I am not planning on posting Cyclone stuff here everyday just now and then.
Sunday I will take my dad to see the game. On Fathers day they let the “kids” on the field for catch. Plenty of little kids but quite a few big kids like me go out there too. :D

Johan Santana pitches today and I am very anxious to see how he does. Trust me I will analyze every pitch. ;)

Forget the loss yesterday it sure was great to Santana looking so much better.
He allowed two runs on three hits in 7, Even though his velocity was still inconsistent he dominated through the fifth inning, but then gave up a home run to Carlos Pena. Did you guys pick up on that I told you so look on his face during the after game interview ;)
But once again the Mets bats were asleep and gave Johan no run support and we lost.
Beltran Wright and Church were 2 for 11.
A big part of that had to go to pitcher James Shields who was awesome.
Our pen was not sharp, Parnell and Green looked tired and were not effective. But Feliciano got his work done, getting Crawford.

File this under Uh Oh, Beltran is still having problems with that bone bruise in his knee and will have an MRI to se what’s up. Like I said, Uh Oh

Reyes is getting very anxious to play, he is wantin to come back in the worst way.
Saturday he was going to take ground balls, but the rain kept him from doing any.
Ground balls are a good start but it won’t tell us much until he tries running again. So far the only exersie his legs are getting in the weight room and walking on the treadmill Jose did say he has not felt any pain in the last few days.

Soooo when is Manual going to use Evans? I mean he won’t be here that long with Pagan returning as soon as next week. Yesterday with all the bats cold I would have thought Jerry would habe thought to put the kid in. I did not se the whole game and don't remember seeing Nick even in the dugout. Of course with Fox doing the play by paly there is always less Mets talk than there is with SNY and Gary, Keith, Ron and Kevin.

Here is a great hot of Evans and Wright. Looks like David is happy to see him back.

Even as a Met fan, I've had a difficult time following the injury reports. What are the reports these days on Reyes, Perez, Putz, Delgado (have I missed anyone?)?

And while I love the fact that we've been keeping pace with the Phillies despite the number of injuries, we could be doing a lot better. We haven't been as sharp in the field, we've made a LOT of bad pitching decisions and had a lot of base-running blunders. I'm not sure if that's all Manuel or just because the Mets have not had a steady lineup or pitching staff since the middle of April.

I saw the switch of Evans and Martinez with Evans coming up. Keith Hernandez was in the booth showing what was wrong with Martinez's hitting and how it had changed since the kid impressed everyone in Spring Training. Hope someone that can help him was paying attention.

I missed the game yesterday. I read that Santana looked good despite the loss. Is that one less injury fear to stop worrying about or just another guy being heroic and playing injured that we'll have to worry about losing later?

And thanks Sonny for creating this post again this year. Looking forward to posting throughout the season and hopefully into October.

First of all it is my pleasure to create this Mets thread every year, and secondly I want to thank you for posting and sharing your thoughts. It is most appreciated.
As to the question of injuries, it is a very liquid situation changing very day, but here is what I know right now.

Jose Reyes the Mets still don't know when he will be able to play again. He has been working with the trainers and spending time in the weight room. He has also been taking swings and is going to try playing some catch perhaps today, but until he starts to try running we won’t know for sure how is doing. Jose says he has not had any pain lately but don’t expect him back until after the All Star break.

Carlos Delgado is healing well but it will be at least three weeks before he even tries to swing a bat, some say probably longer than that. Delgado already believes his surgery was worthwhile, since he doesn't feel the "pinching" sensation in his right hip that he felt before the procedure to repair a torn labrum and remove a bone spur. Still, he can't be fully sure he'll continue progressing just yet. Just like Jose, Carlos has been riding an exercise bicycle, but is steering clear of placing weight or doing any rotational activity with the hip.

John Maine was placed on the disabled list on June 11 with fatigue in his right shoulder. He is eligible to come off the DL today, but the Mets announced earlier in the week that he needs more time. Earliest I see him back is at least two weeks away.

R. Martinez should return in about 3-4 weeks, he had surgery on his dislocated left pinky.

Angel Pagan Is almost fully recovered and should be back in about a week.

Ollie Perez is in St Lucie on minor league rehab assignment he is taking it slow although Warthen did visit Ollie recently and said he is doing well. No word or guess on when he will be back.

Billy Wagner is doing far better than expected he is on track to be back in the Mets lineup in late August. He has had an amazingly fast recovery.

JJ Putz had his surgery and won’t be back before September.

Carlos Beltan will have that knee looked at today, he is having an MRI. But judging by that incredible catch in yesterday’s game I am not too concerned.

Speaking of yesterdays game
Mike Pelfrey falling behind in the count got rocked again, I guess D Wright did not get through to him. What has happened of course is that the opposing teams now have his number, they know he is a two pitch one speed pitcher. Mostly they expect his sinker slider and an occasional change up. There is little element of surprise.

Every pitcher in the pen was used yesterday, it reminded me of ’08 cause they were not much better especially Parnell who is proving every day that he can not be counted on to fill in for Putz. He allowed four runs without retiring a single batter. The pen looks very very tired.

Some what better offense yesterday it was nice not see all the Mets hitters walking from the dugout to the plate only to return to the dugout again. They were wearing a trench in the dirt between the dugout and home plate. Nice to seem them yesterday running the bases first.

Some very bad news about Endy Chavez. He is now with the Seattle Mariners and yesterday he was badly hurt after a co collision on Friday.
Chavez tore his ACL and MCL, as well as his lateral meniscus on the play. Preliminary information suggests that his recovery time will be nine to 12 months, which could mean that he won't even be ready for the start of the 2010 season. So sorry to hear that, I always loved Endy.

I haven't been around much...but I'm going to CitiField Thursday and I'm so excited about it!
Here's hoping the Mets can escape the quagmire that seems to be the NL East. I don't much like interleague play anymore...
And, yes, I can root wholeheartedly for the Mets since I can't stand the Cardinals.

I am excited for this series - I know the Mets are no where near 100% healthy, and I'm hoping that the momentum of sweeping the Royals yesterday carries over!

Sorry sonny and Sausy ;)

6-4 Mets victory in the first of four vs.St. Louis at CitiField!(!)Sorry,Abs!:pRedding stepped up tonight,Stokes got always dangerous MVP contender Albert Pujols to ground into a double play in the eighth....offense wasn't explosive but did the job.Alex Cora was clutchLuis Castillo had great night(and yes,Abs.....he was safe on Alex Cora's hit despite the tremendous thow by Rick Ankiel, throw was a little wide though and Castillo avoided the swipe tag):gogirl:

Daniel Murphy had another encourging night, two hits including a big home run.

Omir Santos continue to be the most underrated and indispensable Met,four hits including another home run.

Just want my Mets to play hard, smart and aggresive to help compensate for all the injuries.....and take it to the Cards(love them against anyone else,though(*8*))and breathe down the necks of those loathesome, struggling Phillies!

It's great when the Mets play sound, fundamental baseball, get clutch hits, clutch pitching, great defense. Why it doesn't happen more often, who knows. Cora does so much during a game on defense and at bat, very underrated. Castillo had a stellar nite at bat and in the field. Nice effort all around. I was surprised Manuel left Redding in to start the 8th, and give up the leadoff HR. 2 or 3 times around the lineup with his stuff is enuff. Would like to see another nite or two of this type of game. Let's Go Mets!!

Sure was nuice to see all the comments today after yesterays game
All except abs of course :spank: ;)

Fun game last night.
The Mets are down another core player with Beltran and now it’s pretty much just D Wright and his boys. I heard of Benny and the jets, just let's call them David and the Mutts.
Mutts is a good name for a bread of mix and match that really fits this Mets team. Ya gotta love how hard they are playing and how resolved they are not to let those injuries keep them down. It brings a whole new meaning to the name “Amazins”
In a game like that you have to look at more than just the outstanding pitching and clutch hitting to the guys running the team. I am talking about Jerry Manual and Tony LaRussa. They were dueling managers last night, trying to one up one another with cagey plays, player positioning and of course pitcher selection. Tony made just one error bringing that lefty in but otherwise both managers played smart intelligent baseball which was a joy to watch. It has been a while since I watched a game from the prospect of the managers more than the players. It was a work of art watching theses two guys manage. It is no wonder LaRussa has just won 2500 games in his career, last night he showed why. The guy is an outstanding manager. Fortunately, Jerry was one better last night. I flipped out over Alex Cora when he caught on to the wheel play being used against him with runners on first and second and no outs, he did not bunt even though I think the bunt sign was still on, instead, he swung and ripped a single to center and brought in a run. Now THAT’S how you play baseball. Sorry LaRussa, that did not work out for ya.

We tamed Pulolis and as saucy mentioned that double play Stokes had Al hit into was awesome. Let’s just call him Brian (the Pulolis killer) Stokes. I guess we know who our new #8 Man is now. Parnell has lost that job.
How could we not be excited and oh so proud of what the Mets did last night. So many guys said they were gong to fade away with all the injuries, but instead they did just what I had hoped they would do and that is come pout swinging. If you looked around he dugout all you saw was enthusiasm, high sprit and confidence that they were not going to be counted out. They beat the cards in every way possible with pitching hitting and most of all heart and guts

Did I mention Tim Redding? He was in total command I knew we were in for a great game when the first 12 pitches he threw were all strikes. Tim got his first win, one of many.

In the Are You Kiddin Me department, Jose Reyes and trainer Ray Ramirez were in a car accident after last night’s game. Thanks God no one was hurt, apparently Reyes and Ramirez were rear-ended by a fire truck while driving to the hospital for a check-up visit
Like I said, ARE YOU KIDDIN ME????.

News from John Maine is that he had a solid first rehab outing in Port St. Lucie.
He will throw in the bullpen in two days and will go from there. Maine said he felt good, and that he is ready to go. So why am I skeptical????
Oliver Perez didn't do so well, he started the second game of a doubleheader and allowed six runs in three innings on seven hits.
Sounds like the same ole Ollie.

So can we keep it going? Well we will find out tonight when it’s Livan Hernandez against Joel Pineiro.
