New York Mets 2010

Lots of interesting posts guys, I am so glad to see the input.

Syam let me start with your comment about catchers and their importance. I have written a lot on that subject but to boil it down, the catcher can play an important role in a pitchers success. The catcher ability to call the game is crucial, he hasta know his pitcher's mechanics and strengths, and of course the batters weaknesses and knowledge of his strenghts, a very important job. I am a firm believer in the relationship of a pitcher with his catcher, and also think it is wise for a manager to allow a pitcher to pick his catcher. I once had this conversation with a Brooklyn Cyclones manager who agrees with that however Jerry manual does not. Jerry believes it is bad for a pitcher to become too dependent on a catcher and wants his pitchers to be able to be more flexible and play with all of the catchers on the rooster. A perfect example of how a good catcher/pitcher matchup works well is Pelfrey and Blanco. They are as one unit perfect together and as long as Henry is on the team he should catch for Pelf. I do not agree with Manual on opinion on that matter. I pitch every summer and have always called for my own catcher, a kid I have known and played with for four years; I am just more comfortable with him behind the plate and would not want to pitch to anyone else as long as he is around. I don’t worry about getting too comfortable as Manual thinks, cause I still take bull pen with other guys and that’s enough.

Manual made an interesting and I think excellent move for today’s double header, he is switching the rotation between Perez and Santana. The regular rotation would have put Perez in game one and Santana in game two, but Manual swapped em around. What this will do is allow Santana to pitch against Halliday in the Phillies game next week so good move Jerry that will be amazing.

I stand by my belief that Dicky should be considered for the rotation if Maine fails again. I know someone here wrote that Dicky was “not very good” but if you have seen him pitch or followed his career as I have you would understand my appreciation of him.. I also spoke to the Cyclones pitching coach about Dicky who felt he will be a great asset for the Mets. If Maine continues to have problems he needs to go to the pen and give the ball to either Takahashi or someone like Dicky. Maine is a mental mess and I believe it is affecting him physically. Of course I also worry that demoting Johnny may screw with his head all the more but perhaps it will help him settle down. He’s got the stuff but he can’t seem to use it.

OK saucy I will let up on Bay; he seems to be coming along now and may earn that big salary after all. But you know me I gotta hit em when they disappoint. ;)

Lastly David Wright, a lot has been said about his “slump” I have written abut it many times. David is just very confused about his approach and his swing he is trying to many things and his strike outs are alarming. He seems to be doing a lot of guessing, when gets his fastball he either fouls it back or misses it, when he gets a curveball he misses it by like a foot. He just seems so unsure of himself. I have also noticed that when he falls behind in the count he mostly takes a first pitch strike, 0-1 he will strike out, 1-2 again he strikes out this happens 20 otta about 25 times. Like I said, he’s guessing. Plus think about this, if he is striking out 0-2, as he is, it tells me the pitchers do not fear him they are coming right after him; in fact they are challenging him. I noticed just the other day he seemed not to be battling as he did not even recognizing the curve ball.

I still don't think Dickey would be the answer in the long run of the season. In spring training 09 Dillon Gee got some attention and he's off to a rocking start in AAA.

The Mets are out of options on Maine so he's have to clear waivers or agree to go to the minors.

I agree Maine has the stuff, but does he anymore? The fastball lacks velocity and it doesn't have the life it once did. Maine is a guy who needs to throw hard where as a guy like Johan can get away with it. I like Maine, but I think injuries took their toll and mentally he's shot.

I hope I'm wrong, but based on the spring and now the regular season he's shown nothing that shows he's reliable

Well,we will see tomorrow where Maine is.Hopefully he will be able to at least give a decent effort. His lack of velocity,or command even before the left, non throwing elbow trouble that got him out of his previous start is a real concern though.

Can you believe guys that we are the FIRST PLACE New York Mets with our wins in the doubleheader over the Dodgers, and Philadelphia's loss to the Giants tonight?(!)

So happy for David Wright with his three hits in tonight's game...racked his 1,000th hit,a clutch RBI single and a huge bases clearing triple. He was so frustrated looking to get going again but seemed confident he just needed to get into a groove, and hopefully this starts him up in a major way.Of course, the team guy David is,the most important thing about that#1,000 was that it helped the team win...baseball is about numbers to a degree but they are empty if the glory only goes to the individual...its helping the team achieve its goals doing your part that is the most important thing.

Jason Bay is starting to get going, another important element in helping getting the team going...another clutch hit,an RBI triple(his THIRD already!)in the 10-5 second game and his first homer with the Mets in the earlier one,See sonny?;)Told you you gotta let up on him and cut him some slack. He's so happy and frisky now sonny is not on his case any more he's even making stellar tumbling catches in left field!:pSeriously,Jason is doing a solid job in left, showing good enough mobility and instincts and as always giving a strong effort.

Ike of course shows he's quite mature for a rookie going the other way lacing a clutch two run double in the nightcap. He looks like he belongs, making adjustments and just showing a professional, mature approach.

Takahashi did a stellar job for the ineffective(surprise, surprise:rolleyes:)Ollie Perez, really giving the club a shot in the arm in the nightcap. Johann Santana, though without his "A" stuff pitched masterfully around that going six scoreless innings in the 4-0 first game win.Having someone like Johann so confident he can work around those situations and showing poise and professionalism is so important to the spirit and morale of the club.

Jose Reyes is showing just how dynamic he can be...and I love that batting third he protects Bay and Wright because he is just such a threat with his bat and legs.I tell you,sonny...Jose in the third spot is a great, daring move by Jerry Manual. He makes his share of mistakes, sometimes things that seem incomprehensible...but Jerry, when you get em right like this got to give you props!..|

Great effort by all last nite!! Sausy hit all the highlights, but I think the best thing was for D Wright to get going. He looked strong in the second game. Perhaps the knuckleballer helped him get his "eye" back on the ball, instead of just flailing. A great time for the offense to awaken, we'll need lots of runs in the Phils whiffle ball park this weekend. Let's go Mets!!

Great post Saucy you said it all and said it well

Oliver Perez did take a step back but I am not ready to start calling him the old Ollie, I am cutting him a break cause of the weather. It was cold and windy and I know how difficult it is to properly hold much less throw a ball, Santana’s outing earlier in the day was affected by the weather as well. So no, I still have hope that Ollie has made progress over the last few starts and I am not ready to give up on him yet. Maine however has just one more start today to prove he still has anything left, if he crashes today I say put him in the pen, and based on the outstanding performance yesterday by Takahashi I would say give him the ball.

Jason Bay continues to get it together I am so happy to see that. Way to go Jason.

David Wright, well what can I say, he may have finally figured it out, can’t be sure on just one good day but I am very optimistic, he is just too good a ball player for that slump to go on. That 1000th hit in his major league career coupled with his 143 career home runs jut proves that.:=D:

Ike Davis is still just a little bit wet behind the ears at first base continuing to make the simple mistakes one would expect from a rookie but his bat more than makes up for that. Ike will learn from those mistakes, he is well aware of em and is determined to fix it. He will be fine. This creates a big problem for Murphy. Daniel is still not ready to return, while most of his workouts have been good he is still feeling a little pain when he turns corners running the bases so he needs a bit more time. But as Ike develops his first base skills and continues to tear it up at the plate it is unlikely Daniel will be back at first. That leaves him to learn another position, second is an option he has talked about, or sit on he bench. The most likely is that he will be sent to AAA which might be the best thing for him right now, that way he can play every day and get 100 % healthy again. Of course that could also mean the Mets might showcase him for trade.

You guys know I am a major follower of the minors and just in case any of you are as well you need to know that SNY is going to carry several Bisons games this year.
The first is tomorrow night 7PM and another on May 2nd

First place NY Mets, lets just savor that shall we.;)

Damn.

Someone lit a fire under the Mets collective asses! ;)

Don't wake me up!! Mets on a roll! Another nice victory yesterday, with John Maine doing a good job, followed by the bullpen boys. Lots of contributions from the whole "team", what a concept! A great homestand!!Would be nice to roll down the turnpike and take the series from the Phils. Let's go Mets!!

Damn.

Someone lit a fire under the Mets collective asses! ;)

“collective Asses” he he, Cory we can always count on you.

I had dinner last night with a bunch of friends; two of em are pro baseball players, so of course the Mets were high on the topic of discussion.
One of the things I took from that talk was that Jerry Manual is just not being given enough credit for what has happened to the Mets and many of the players are bothered by that. You may remember a couple of weeks ago there was something written that got around about how many of the Mets players were unhappy with Manual which was guickly dismissed by many of the players coming forward and saying that that was pretty much BS and that they had Jerry’s full support. Manual spends a great deal of time individually with all of the players, mentoring, teaching, and giving them the support and vote of confidence that helps them build their self esteem. Jerry works hard, or as one of the guys said tirelessly, to help his guys. He is always there for them his door is never closed. I had not realized what an important part of the Mets recent success can be attributed to Manual until last night. We, myself included, find it easy and spend too much time bashing Jerry and second guessing his decisions. I wanted to share with you guys just how much support he gets from the players and how much credit they give him for what has been happing the last few weeks.
Another subject that came up was the starting rotation and what changes we can expect, well apparently Manual is not ready to make any changes he really wants to give Maine and Perez a ton of rope and time to come around. One of the guys said that right now the chemistry and morale in the clubhouse could not be better and it would be a big mistake to mess with that by demoting anyone or lowering anyone’s feeling of confidence, make sense to me so after what I learned last night you will not be seeing me writing any more anti Manual rants or demands to change the rotation….at least for now. :D

So now they go on the road to Phiilie and Ike Davis is going to find put what it means to be a rookie on the road. He is prepared for what you could call his indoctrination to the team. He knows he will have to carry he bags for the other players and said he will war that like a badge of honor, but what else the players have in store for him has him excited. Bring it on cause Ike the total team player is ready for what ever they dish out to him, should be fun.

Shhhh no one wake Syam, he thinks he is dreaming but the wonderful truth is he's not ;)

zzzzzzzzz, the Mets are in 1st place, the Mets are in 1st place! zzzzzzzzzzz Let's go Mets!!

zzzzzzzzz, the Mets are in 1st place, the Mets are in 1st place! zzzzzzzzzzz Let's go Mets!!

Hope you never stop havin that dream babe ;)

I hope you guys got a chance to see yesterdays Bisons game on SNY
My boy R.A. Dickey retired a record 27 consecutive batters in a 4-0 absolute gem a performance that was simply awesome. It was made extra special cause with just 90 pitches, he owned the Bulls, who are prolly the best hitting club in the International League, in a complete one hit game. I counted 12 ground outs and nine flyball outs. He threw 68 of his 90 pitches for strikes.

I just dono if Ollie Perez will ever again pitch as well as this guy can, if Manual does make a change eventually forget Takahashi and bring up Dicky. I know I keep raving about this kid but he is the real deal. Guys, ya gotta see him pitch :=D:

Another fine effort by our 1st place Mets! Once Niese got past a few bumps in the second he got on a nice steady roll, and the bats put quick work to Kyle Kendrick. The second homer by Barajas off Lidge was nice to see as well.

As for R.A. Dickey, i know you're high on him, Sonny, but he's been around awhile in a couple of organizations, with limited major league success. He could be a late bloomer, or just could be one of those "AAAA" players, great in AAA, but not quite good enuff to have a solid major league career. I would only bring him up in an emergency situation, want to give Ollie a little more time.

Hopefully Pelfrey will outpitch "Doc" Halliday today, Let's go Mets!!

Hey Bryan have fun at the park. Ike Davis sure what the doctors ordered. Thing is, the Mets were high on Murphy and wanted Davis to stay in AAA to bone up his skills. So far so good but I have to think once the book is out on him opposing pitchers are going to try and give him trouble. But he says he is ready for that and is smart enough I think to adjust.
Syam, I hear what you are saying about Dicky but right now he is on fire and since he ain’t getting any younger I want meke the most of his talent. Takahashi would fit in nicely as well. But as you said, and I agree, we should give Ollie a bit more time.

It sure was outstanding to see the Mets continue the wining streak and dominate those Phillies.
Jon Niese was awesome against what is supposed to be a tough Philly lineup. But Jon kept them in line and showed em who was boss. Jon went seven innings allowing only one run on four hits and a walk, striking out 7. I think what helped him fool the Philly batters (pretty much all of em) is his delivery which stayed much the same throughout his pitches, making it difficult for those poor Philly batters to pick up what’s coming. I seem to recall in his last outing the speed of his motion and his arm and body angle varied depending on the pitch, which would tip off hitters who might figure out the subtle differences. I am sure you guys noticed Jon’s command was much improved.
Then Mejia came in and ya had to love watching him make Howard go down with that 96 mph fastball and two absolutely wicked curve balls. I know it made my day. Poor Brad Lidge, didn’t you love the way the Mets welcomed him back from the Dl by hitting one of him outta the park, come on that’s just too sweet. ;)

Everything worked last night, we had outstanding defense especially from Francour and Bay, the bats were working and the base running had the Phillies dazed and confused all those Mets running around the bases, making those poor Philly bastards dizzy just so magnificent to see.Speaking of Francour, was he having fun or what, banging into walls, getting hit, throwing on the run. Oh and then there was that homer and his first stolen base of the year, But that pitch he was hit with did give him a bruised elbow and he had to leave the game early.

With two Mets hit by pitches I was concerned about retaliation, I would have hated to se that great game ruined by some sort of brawl. But Francour made his statement like a man stealing second and then scoring. That’s how real sportsmen do it, when the opposing pitcher appears to have delebratly hit a batter the next time that batter gets up to bat he knocks one out of the park and perhaps stares at the pitcher as he takes his home run trot. Look directly at the pitcher as you round all the bases that’s the way I like to see revenge taken out.

Meanwhile Francour’s injury is not serious X-rays were negative a simple bruise is all. Jeff said last night he does not even want the day off on Saturday cause “I’m havin too much fun” If Manual gives Jeff the night off you can be sure he will be back on Sunday.

Daniel Murphy is making progress he played five innings at first base in an extended spring training game yesterday.

Sean Green is on the DL with a stress fracture in a rib on his right side.

The Phillies are in Third place a game and a half behind the Mets and Pelfrey will pitch today and try and keep the Mets wins going and push the Phillies 2 and a half games behind the Mets. The nationals have moved up to second place. One game behind the Mets.

Finally let me share with you Dan Warthen's daily inspirational quote posted in the clubhouse It read: "If you ain't the lead dog, the view is the same: butt holes

^ with ike being so solid and potentially spectacular, murphy's role with the mets and trade value is ............ not so much - oh well

guess that's an "A" problem :)

let's beat Doc today

Ugh.Yesterday's 10-0 shallacking took some of the luster off the stirring 8 game winning streak for the Mets.Disappointing performance by Mike Pelfrey, whose mistake to Shane Victorino resulted in a decisive three run homer that kind of put the game away...though the encouraging thing seems that Mike hasn't been shell shocked by this setback and he will learn from his mistakes and rebound.Roy Halladay is a master,he just was at such an incredible level today even Johann Santana would have had to have nearly reached that kind of flawlessness.

The night before had been so spirited,so fun on so many levelswith Jon Niese recovering quickly from two early mistakes that Jason Bay and especially Jeff Francouer made terrific catches to erase and shutting the Phillies down. His command of all his pitches have made him a promising rising stud in the rotation.More growth and confidence and he can really help the Mets solidify their rotation...seems like a great kid and now the Mets starters look pretty good overall considering beyond Philadelphia how flawed the bulk of the NL is rotation wise, and that the Mets offense at times seems to be very potent. The defense too, much better than thought originally.

Glad to hear Daniel Murphy is facing live pitching and making good progress...he has said he is fine with the idea of Ike Davis staying at first permanently,he will do anything he is called upon by Jerry Manuel.Ike's gonna be a great one as a player and character wise, but Daniel is no slouch in the class and professionalism department either.

Word to Jeff Francouer...love the way you play, your joy and passion for the game but for God's sakes,be careful!:eek:We love a happy warrior, don't need an injured one!Seems he was tempting fate with the knee and then getting hit near the elbow....we don't need another key guy to find himself on the DL....don't think Mets fans could take that again after last year!

Well I guess you could say the Phillies got revenge yesterday but let’s be real here they had Halladay on the mound so I am ok with that. look, if we are gonna get beat I wanna get beat by the best and Halladay is up there with the top pitchers around today. My dad was watching the game with me and the boys and at one point looked over to me and said “How the heck is he a Phillie and not a Met?” Omar, wanna take that one?
Pelfrey looked good through the first three innings, after that Pelf had a hard time hitting spots, and his fastball was a little too high and got too much of the plate. Then Cora (yup him again) and Reyes (dude you have got to get it together) dropped popups in the fourth. It was all down hill from there. But I am not getting all lover big Pelf cause up to that time he went 27 innings without giving u a run, which is not to shabby. Hell, all of them are gonna have bad days. Pelf will be just fine,
Watching Halliday was like watching a master at work, he just blew me (and the Mets) away with his splitter, that awesome backdoor slider, and something I have often written about and that is the varied speed on a fastball which he had in spades. Ho can ya beat that when you get a 90 MPH fastball and then the very next pitch is the same one at 95MPH, WOW

Was it just me or was the home plate ump looking for a fight with Wright yesterday? Remember when David argued that strike call which was followed by a third strike call? Is it me or did that ump appear to be just waiting for David to say something. He sorta stood there looking at David as if to say got a problem with that? I have to say as well he had a very low strike zone

So today we get a chance to win the series with Santana and Moyer on the mound. A win today will make everything that happened yesterday fade away.

Saucy what you said about Francour is so dead on; I worry about that kid getting hurt again. Thing is he has this football mentality, he loves loves football. During the off season you will find Jeff on his coach at home watching college ball all day long. He carries that tough football player mentality on to the baseball field. When he got to the park yesterday manual asked how he felt and told him it was policy after what happened to him on Friday to give a player the next day off. Jeff told Manual “screw that policy, I want in” Jerry later said when a player has that much of a desire to play you just have to respect that and let him play, which Jeff did.

Yesterday I wrote about the progress Murphy is making and late yesterday word came down that The Mets plan to send Murphy to Buffalo. The more think about that he more I agree with decision cause it would be better for his development to get regular at-bats, which prolly won’t happen right now with the Mets. Plus because of the way Davis has been playing the Mets want Murphy to play multiple positions, including first base, second base and left field. Yeah, left field again. Of course as I mentioned the other day that will only increase his trade value, but I prefer to think it will make him more valuable to the organization if he isn’t traded.
This Murphy move has given Davis a boost in his confidence and I don’t think he is goin anywhere anytime soon, Lemme remind you of his numbers he hit .324/.415/.500 in 11 games since his call-up. He's earned his spot, of course if he begins to struggle; Murphy is a pretty nice backup plan. I like both theses guys but Ike has a very special place in my heart, personality wise Ike is head and shoulders above Murph but the important thing is that Ike can tear it up at the plate. The similarities between the two are their determination, dedication and hard work ethic. Both boys have that covered.
I want Murphy to stay a Met, I expect him to return to the majors sooner than later I don’t want him traded. I will see him in Buffalo if the is there next time I go up there and hope to get a chance to meet and chat with him.

Big day for me tomorrow, my team begins workouts and training for the new season in preperation for our first game on June 5th. I am soooo pumped.:D

Well that was ugly.
Ok so the bad game started for me when I saw the lineup. Matthews instead of Pagan in CF and worse yet Tatis instead of Davis at first. I could not believe Ike was not in the lineup. What was particularly interesting to me was that Saturday Ike said that he had been talking to his dad Ron Davis on the phone and Ron said that Ike could end up playing with Moyer who his dad had also faced. How bout that. When have a Father and son ever done that? Ike was kinda looking forward to that till he saw the lineup card. But Ike said nothing, not his place he believed and I agree but I do not agree with Manual leaving Ike out of that very important game. In the scheme of things it prolly would not have mattered considering the beating the Mets took. I just thought you guys would like that story of Ike and his dad.

So is Johan broken?? A lot of people I spoke to today said his velocity continues to be down, but what I saw was around 90-91 which is about where he has been throwing most of the season so I no longer see that as the problem. Plus his change up is like 10 mph slower, which is just about right. What I saw last night was his fastball location which was very alarming; I mean it was all over the place. He threw too many pitches up in the zone and over the heart of the plate, and the Phillies made him pay. Usually you will see Johan living on the edges but last night he did not, you must have noticed when he hung a few pitches all of them were crushed. I mean his fastball mostly had no movement, worse yet when it did he could not command it. So is he broken? Hell no I am not ready to go there but what a freakin shame he had to crash and burn on National TV against those Phillies.

One more thing I found disturbing, during that dreadful fourth inning when batter after batter was beatin up on Santana, where the fuck was Manual and Warthen? Never once did either of them visit the mound to calm Johan down and help him out. WTF was that about. Seriously, when Johan walked Moyer I had to figure one of those idiots would go out to the mound but instead they just left him there hanging out to dry. By the way you have to hand it to Moyer for that at bat, he was patient, took all the right pitches and earned himself that walk, excellent at bat. But that was followed by a grand slam and still no sign of Manual or Warthen who seemed to be just pacing in the dugout not really knowing what t do. Santana should have been pulled long before he was, I mean at one point I had to think Johan was looking into the dugout saying “get me the Hell out of here” I am sure Santana is not that much a prima dona that Those guys could not have gone out to the mound to speak to him, he deserved that but got no support from either one of those jerks. Very confusing to me and very sad as well. Yeah I know I said I would not get on Manuals case as much as I have but Leaving Davis and Pagan out of the game and giving no support to Johan while he struggled was piss poor management.

I am headin out to the ball park to begin my training, I am so anxious to speak with my baseball buds abut last nights game. Lots to talk about there.

The calendar has changed to May and the Mets are struggling, two ugly losses. Let's stop this nonsense right now! As for last nite, you're right Sonny, someone should have at least trucked out to the mound to see what was up with Johan. I'm thinking Manuel and Warthen certainly didn't want to go to the 'pen early with Maine scheduled tonite, and certainly didn't expect to have to. But, those things happen at times. I also was surprised to see Mathews and Tatis in last nite's lineup. Well it's on to Cincinnati, Let's go Mets!!
