New Zealand flag mistake ?

Equatoreal Guniea, Canada, Eritrea, Cuba, Canada, Ethiopia, north Korea( !), Lebanon, Marshall Islands, Mexico, Mozambique, Sao Tome..., Senegal, Seychelles, Swaziland, United States, Vanuatu (it's NOT VANATU, guys) would be my favorites. Note they also misspell MALDIVES...and where is the COUNTRY called Antarctica???

Fair enough, but they still use black for funerals.
The U. S. flag has red on it, and they use red in things related to Christmas. Red is also one of the prominent colors often occurring in the "upscale" illustrated versions of The Bible. That means that the U. S. flag is promoting Christian religion, in violation of the separation of church and state!! I'm gonna sue! I'm a'gonna take it all the way to The Supremes, y'all.

Not to mention that white is the same color that the Ku Klux Klan uses. That means the U. S. flag is promoting racial hatred and genocide, and some of that is UNCONSTITUTIONAL! Y'know, like yelling "THEATER!" in a crowded fire, LOL.

Oh, and blue...no, I won't even start with that. It's so horrific

Thanks rhodie (Post #40), I like the old Rhodesia flag. A lot. (hmmm...is there some relation between there, and your screen name? And seeing you're in JoBurg, you're probably not who I was thinking you were & under a new name.) And, didn't Rwanda have a different flag in the 1990's?

Also reassessing, I think the Kenya flag is pretty cool.

Here's a great flag for New Zealand...

So many countries are erasing their culture and heritage, it's a shame.
Colonies are not culture and heritage, they're barbaric.

I think a flag should not have any black colour what so ever.
New Zealand has chosen the Bottom Left flag to compete with the current flag.
Do you think they choose the right flag??

They should have choose the Top Right flag.

First of all, why should no flag ever contain "any black colour"? Beautiful combinations can be made with black.

Second, I would have felt comfortable with any of the four EXCEPT the top right one. Because that one is red, white and blue, like so many other flags in the world, including the one so similar to their current flag that they are now trying to distinguish themselves from it a little more. If you want to stand out, and no longer be confused with Australia, then why take a flag in the same colours as Australia and dozens of others?

I salute the former British colonies of New Zealand, and Australia for their contributions liberating my country from Axis occupation during the Second World War. Thank you the peoples of New Zealand, and Australia (and the United Kingdom, India, South Africa) for your sacrifices in Greece to restore our freedom from the barbarity of Nazi German occupation.

In an neighbourhood where human rights are severely restricted...try China, and Indonesia etc. etc. etc. the democratic traditions, and parliamentary governance of New Zealand, and Australia are beacons of light.

I personally liked the bottom left one best, but maybe that is because it is a brighter blue than the top right.

I'm pretty sure it's the same colour, but it stands out better in a combination with black and white than with all this red?

You'd never go back to the Union Jack now after the Maple Leaf.

No,, we wouldn't, but a majority or our provincial and territorial flags incorporate the Union Jack or the crosses of St. George or St. Andrew or St. Patrick in them, as do our coats of arms. We are still very proud of our heritage, but, until 1965, Canada had no flag. The maple leaf has long been our national symbol, and red and white have long been our national colours. That's why our flag is what it is now.

Belgium flag?
Black = death
Red = blood
Yellow, red & black, these 3 colours just doesn't not work for me

That's what they mean to YOU. Colours don't mean the same thing in other countries. Canada's flag is NOT a symbol of blood, and white in China is a bad colour. World flag colours don't mean the same to them as they do to you. You can't condemn a nation just because you don't like the colours of its flag. In your case, you should be condemning Canada instead of putting it on your list of favourites.

I did say Canada has the [STRIKE]2nd[/STRIKE] 3rd best flag, and Japan has the best flag.
ONLY red and black together represent blood & death ;)

ONLY red and black together represent blood & death ;)

I repeat: Only to you. I'm sure, in some cultures, black represents 'good luck' and red represents 'life'.

What does your ass avatar represent?

Yes, it does appear that the majority of us still favour Britain's flag on ours. Why, I have yet to work out? The old flag will win the final referendum unfortunately. Why do you see it as a waste of money?

Before the official process to change flag began, there was already polls showing 70% of the population was against the idea. After the process began, there same support for the old flag. The majority of folks in NZ wanted to keep things as they are.

My NZ friends cannot see what's so good about wasting over NZ$27m just on referendums, and Bill English the Finance minister has acknowledged it may go over £30m in creating the hype across the media, for a futile exercise that had a foregone conclusion.

It neither benefits your education, health, infrastructure nor really stimulates your economy that much. The money would have been better spent on kids' school meals or better healthcare for the elderly IMHO.

Wait a minute! If the whole idea is to cut yourself loose from the UK, shouldn't that chap Bill English change his name?

Some history :

Polls were taken a few years back that showed voters were keen to look at a new flag. Before the last election, the National party had it as part of their election promises. If they get in, there will be a referendum. So it went through a democratic process. If we voted National in, there would be a referendum (it was also Labour's policy, by the way). National gets in. They set up a referendum, and now people are bleating about it.

In my view 27 million is money well spent. Firstly, it will give us more of a unique identity, separate from Australia. There are many times when Kiwis are overseas, other countries will fly the Aussie flag by mistake. Secondly, it will distinguish us from a British colony. What is the advantage of people seeing us as some sort of British colony? The Brits give us no favours these days. It's time for NZ to stand alone and be proud as an individual country. Thirdly, by being more identifiable, with a unique flag, it will give us better marketing opportunities and recoup the 27 million many times over.

And lastly, it's just weird to have another country's flag in the corner of our one.

That's the same with NZ. The silver fern has been our national symbol since our soldiers wore it during the Boer War. And that's why I would like to see it on our flag. :)
