hey everyone :)

this is ben from berlin! i only recently moved from hungary to germany to study at the humboldt university since i was lucky enough to get a scholarship for 3 years. i love the city, its awesome :) i dont know anyone here though, and the fact that neither german nor english are my first languages has made me a bit shy... i also dont really know anything about gay life in this city, i was hoping that perhaps some of you would have some ideas :) or maybe you'd just want to say hi and give me a hug! :) i'd love that too!

anyhow,
ben

thanks so much Jerry, big hug to you too! :)

and thanks to you too Coyote, und ja, ein kleines bisschen deutsch kann ich schon ;) i'll make sure to check out those places, though to be honest, im a bit afraid to go to some bar all by myself. it'd be nice to make some queer friends in berlin, i guess i'll have to check out whether the university has a gay group or something similar! :) thanks for the advice though, i appreciate it :)

I'm sorry, I am just in Berlin about once a year ;)

But the Siegessäule is definitely THE magazine to grab.

Other than that I can recommend the *POPPOURRI* party at magnet club (greifswalder str, you can walk from the alex or prenzlauer berg) - if you like indie/alternative music

Ahhh, Berlin..... I was born in Berlin. I never thought I'd see the wall come down. My last 2 trips back were really something. Berlin has changed so much. Always nice to hear from someone there. Hope you have fun! It's a great city!

Although finding a parking space has become a bit of a challenge. Boy... THAT was fun! LOL!

thanks for the advice guys, i really appreciate it :) too bad none of you lives in berlin! well i wasnt really getting my hopes up about meeting people from berlin through a site like this, but hey, a girl can dream :P anyway, thank you again, many hugs! <3 :)

love,
ben

If only millions of native Americans could write in English as well as you....... :=D:

thanks :P so is there nobody here who actually lives in berlin? im a bit too afraid to check out the above mentioned clubs and bars all by myself :)

hey again :)

just thought i'd drop by and rant a bit, seeing as this is a place where im not burdening my friends with it :) feel free to read it if you feel up to it and want to give me a hug, which i would appreciate by the way :P
so it's been around 5 months now since i moved to berlin. it has always been clear to me that it wouldn't be easy, you know, giving up your friends, only meeting them once or twice a year from now on (in case they have time of course...), having difficulties with the new language(s) and therefore having even bigger difficulties with the making of new friends :P until december it was quite alright, i enjoyed living on my own though it was a tiny bit depressing at times, having nobody to turn to. unfortunately im kind of an introvert, i dont like starting a conversation even though i know its not hard... im not sure why, but i just cant go up to someone and say hi, im ben, nice to meet you. maybe its because of the language, obviously im not a german and im having difficulties at times, especially when im trying to reproduce the "german accent" which generally results in them thinking im french and not understanding a single word :P interestingly, this problem vanishes when im drunk. i met some hungarian girls here, so i actually had people to go and have a drink with, except they aren't gay, you know, and i knew they were going to leave berlin in february, while i was going to stay here for at least another year... so while i enjoyed their company and we had lots of fun times, it just wasn't what i needed. i starting doubting that this was for me, if i could ever become a real resident, have real german friends and perhaps date german guys even. im still a virgin and i've never dated anyone (obviously because im a bit shy and not the best looking guy either, though i did visit the only gay bar in my hometown, plus because being gay isn't quite accepted in hungary), so im just full of doubt. not being able to speak german like a real german can and being so unexperienced... is it really a good idea to move to a new country at 18? ah dear god, i cant really organize my thoughts, it just felt good to rant a bit :) hope nobody minds! wish there were some berliner people here to hang out with, maybe getting to know people wouldnt be so awkward then. oh well :)

good night everyone, sweet dreams :)

love, ben

Did you consider doing language courses? Usually there you will meet people in similar situations like yourself. And you can learn together ;)
Continue to try speaking German - it might be easier to get around while talking English, but obviously you won't learn German that way ;) Most people will appreciate your effort to learn the language since many strangers living here don't even bother to try.

Have you thought about not living alone? Searching for a shared apartment, where maybe 3 or 4 people live together?

I got to know most people over flatmates when I went abroad.

Also try joining a sports club, or a choir.

I've heard so much of Berlin's diversity, there's got to be a way to meet all types of people! Also, summer is on it's way - I'm sure you will meet people and might make some friends, when everyone's walking and sitting in the parks, enjoying the sun.

hey guys :) thanks for your answers, i really appreciate them!

about the language courses... well i CAN speak german, thats not the problem, im studying german as my secondary subject and have been studying it for 12 years in school, its just that its not the same trying to express myself in german or in hungarian, you know? :) im a bit worried about how hard it'll be to find a guy like this, since im a bit shy and add to that the language barrier... well anyway, perhaps my shyness will one day attract a real dominant man, since that's what im hoping and looking for :P

i've actually been thinking about flatmates, i do think that would be a nice option, of course i'd love a gay or at least a non-homophobic (is that the correct english term? im not sure...) one, i wonder how hard it is to find one. anyway, summer IS going to be fun, cant wait to be able to drop the warm clothes and just enjoy bathing in the sunlight :)

still, i wish there were some german or berliner people here, that would ease up things by so much :( oh well

still, once again, thank you so much for being so kind guys, i appreciate it :)

love, ben

Well, well, well.
I really want to come to Berlin. To see the history of one of the oldest cities in Europe. :) And to learn German. It's such a bad-ass sounding language I think.
I love it!
I can say "I love my telephone number. Can I have yours?" in German, thanks to YouTube and Flava Flav. Haha! Yeah... moving on.
;)

Welcome to JUB. A big Kentucky hello to you.
Enjoy your stay.

Hello! I'm studying German too, which means I'll be moving to Germany for a semester next year. I don't know where I will be, and, unfortunately, none of my gay friends are going to Humboldt, so I can't refer you to them. One option I've had recommended and repeated to me is to live in a Wohngemeinschaft. Basically, it's a student flat; one guy rents the whole flat out and then he advertises rooms. You get interviewed and then, if you're successful, you'll get a room. Obviously you have to pay rent and utilities. Since I don't know where I'm going, I haven't started looking yet, so I can't recommend any sites. I've been told it's easy enough to find a decent site on 'google.de', though. If you want, I can ask some of the fourth years who were abroad last year to recommend a site? I don't know if you'll be able to do it now, it might be a bit late. If you don't want to move, you may be able to do it the other way round and look for a flatmate(s).

Anyway, I went to Berlin late last year, about two days after the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. In my experience, people are friendly enough and will talk to you if you talk to them. If you want to improve your German and/or improve your confidence in speaking it, don't let on you can speak English. I went into a café and ordered something in German. The guy replied in English. I don't know how he knew, but he did and the bugger refused to speak German.

Anyways, good luck, und viel Spaß! (*8*) (*8*)

We can spot a british accent :D And most people here speak a decent english, and either try to be helpful or are just happy to show their that they can speak your language :) I have often heard about this "problem" ;)

if you are looking for a "wohngemeinschaft" or just "wg" try www.wg-gesucht.de or http://www.wohngemeinschaft.de
