OSLO – President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," the Norwegian Nobel Committee said, citing his outreach to the Muslim world and attempts to curb nuclear proliferation.

It is his efforts and not necessarily the results which are being rewarded.

I think you americans are priviledged to have a president of his stature.

Stop complaining and critisizing you ungrateful gits.

You chose him in a free and fair election, and thats more than we get to do! :grrr:

Soldiers choose of their own free will to do a job where they are likely to be sent to a war and possibly be killed. And without those soldiers doing the wonderful job they do, you guys would probably have a few more buildings smashed up by another set of (also) ungrateful gits.

There Ive said it.

I've no particular views as to whether Obama deserves the prize or not...

... but in the course of some readings, I came across the story of Irena Sendler - check it out for yourself, if interested - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irena_Sendler.

Amazing story, amazing courageous woman.

Oh and lets conjecture - what will Obama do with the cash? Into his own personal stash, or to charity?!

My name is Matt and I'm 22, and I have an addiction.

I have no more secrets to tell you Karen.

I WANT MY MINT MILANO! ](*,) ](*,)

I expect the debate to be about why he should not win the prize, rather than the reasons why he should, including those given by the Nobel Prize Committee itself.

Call me Skeptical Skeeter but I don't expect much of an intelligible debate. I'm not jocking Obama's nuts, some of his doings have left a bitter taste in my mouth, but the folks who are so passionately against him have yet to offer anything resembling reason.

A high-school friend of mine on Facebook posted something yesterday to the effect of Obama trying to take away his right to bear arms.

I don't expect much of a debate from a topic that starts with:

Does anyone else think it's a bit premature that President Obama has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize when he hasn't really brought peace anywhere on the globe yet?

At first I thought it was a joke. If peace is requisite for winning a Nobel Peace Prize, every recipient's award should be revoked, there will never, EVER be total peace.

And why shouldn't he keep it? (Though I suspect he won't.)

No one ever asks what the writers, physicists, chemists, et. al. do with their winnings.

Strangely, when I read yesterday that the prize would be announced today, the idea of the president winning the award flashed through my head. But then I thought, "It's probably too soon yet." Glad I was wrong.

If he returns it, it will be a huge, egotistical mistake on his part, especially after already having said he is "humbled" to have received it.

What I wanna know is....what are they gonna give to poor Joe Biden?

^^RL, we were talking about the money, not the prize itself.

I suspect many would want him to donate the money to charity.

WHY the HELL are some of ya'll complain that he won. If ya'll had watched his press conference this morning like I did ya'll would have saw where he said he doesn't deserve it or to be in the company of people who really do. I think he does because he put America back making friends with the rest of the world again instead of enemies like the previous Administration. And to that guy whose friend is worried about his rigt to bear arms President Obama has TOO MUCH on his plate to worry about taking away your gun so you can go out and hunt a deer on the weekend you idiot. And THOSE of you who don't think he deserves it get off your A**E* and come up with a Middle East Peace Plan.

I enjoyed, reading it. Thank you.

I am very proud of President Obama for winning the Nobel prize. He seems to be taking it with a "level head". He knows he has more work to do.

i fully expect to find a nobel peace prize in the next mcdonalds happy meal i see.

As opposed to previous recipients Henry Kissinger (1973) and Yassir Arafat (1993)?

One news story (sorry I don't have the link) has already pointed out that Obama would have only been in office for 2 weeks when the nominations for this year's Nobel Peace Prize closed. I think it was rather premature of the Nobel committee to even consider Obama for what he did in his first two weeks. Or perhaps when nominations close they don't really close. I think giving the peace prize to Obama was premature and the Nobel committee has done a disservice to the Peace Prize. The award would have had more legitimacy had Obama been nominated next year and won.

As it is now I think the Nobel Peace Prize has been cheapened. Before others jump all over me for that last comment, I would like to say that others winners from before have also done their part to cheapen the award (at least two have been mentioned previously in this thread).

Is everyone aware that the deadline for entries for nominees was February 1st?

Obama had been in office exactly 12 days, or 288 hours...

uggh.. that name irritates me, nothing personal,(i think he's doing an OK job for now) it's just as soon as you say obama everyone goes "OMG I LOVE HIM" "CHANGE" or "HOPE"
and he hasn't done ANYTHING. winning the nobel prize has proven that even the nobel prize has lost the great dignity it once had.

Give him a chance to prove he's this amazing person THEN you can give him all the praise and awards you want...

P.S. remeber he DID copy a lot of his speeches during the elections..
