NY Mets 2013

So I finally got the call I have been waitin for for close to a month
Ike Davis is packing tonight to head to Milwaukee to rejoin the team (!):=D:

 
....and along with that good news is that Brandon Lyon is gone, too. ANother of those tough losses when a clutch hit here or there could have won the game. Two remarkable game tying HR's though by Neuwenhuis and Recker. Let's clobber the Brew Crew, Lets go Mets!!
 
Yup Syam another one of our leaky pens is gone thanks for mentioning that. In addition The Mets have demoted reliever Gonzalez Germen to Vegas which completes the roster moves for Ike Davis and Greg Burke.

We should have a good series with the Brewers who are struggling a bit more than the Mets are right now and we need to beat up on em. It ‘important for us to beat up on the weaker teams these are games we have to take advantage of. The guys are a bit worn (just don’t say they are tired) they have had a rough couple of weeks with rain delays galore, extra inning games, make of games sacrificing days off, and travel just last week we played in three time zones over a 24 hour period. Still the Brewers will face a team of scrappers who never give up they are fighters and they are hungry.

Davis has not had much success with the Brewers who have feasted on Ike in the past so he needs to make that right starting tonight. I am really happy that Keith Hernandez will be in the both tonight to evaluate how Ike is doing.

There is some talk that Josh Satin will get playing time at first base with Ike as well as second with Murphy a bit against leftie/ rightie pitching not a platoon exactly and nothing official on that just the first thought as of now. For tonight Satin will sit Ike will bat cleanup and play first.

Wow, 12 runs, one game!!! Nice effort from the offense, in particular Capt Kirk, who goes 4 for 4 with 5 RBI's!! A nice return by Ike with 3 hits! Great to see a game where the lineup gets it done without relying on Murph and DWright. I believe that will help relax them a bit, knowing others can get the job done. Zach Wheeler had his ups and downs, as is expected, but did a great job getting thru the fifth inning with the bases loaded, one out, and leaving them stranded by coaxing a popout, then getting Francisco looking on a beaut of breaking pitch. Bullpen was good enuff with Josh Edgin being particularly effective and getting a save. Do it again, Let's go Mets!!

As I expected Ike Davis’ return last night went great, he showed what he had been working on in AAA and is back to playing terrific baseball. The difference in Ike from before he went to AAA was more than subtle in my opinion. I was surprised to hear Keith Hernandez say that he did not see that much change in Ike but I saw it a whole other way. For openers he has clearly begun laying off fastballs not that he got that many last night most of the pitches he saw were curveballs which Ike did not chase, before he went to AAA he was doing that way too much. Ike had said that in AAA he had begun to calm it down a lot which I could clearly see he has although surprisingly Keith never mentioned that either. Ike is taking better swings not over swinging. I thought his bat speed was shorter to the ball which is something he said he has been working on and it showed. Very important too was seeing Ike not swinging at breaking balls he should not swing at something he had been doing a lot before he went to Vegas. That to me translates that he is absolutely seeing the ball better than before, much better. Even his attitude towards the ump when there is bad call, in the past he was doin a lot of pouting and grumbling which was not good at all I credit his dad for helping Ike with that and you saw a taste of that last night in the 6th when the ump called a 3-2 pitch a strike that was clearly a ball off the plate but Ike just looked up at the sky and walked away which is what he needs to do, nice to see him growing in that area. The only thing negative I saw that he still does is pulling those outside pitches but hey, it was only his first game back ;)
It all began when Ike got the call early yesterday morning when the phone woke him up at 5:15 AM and the voice on the other end said pack your bags you’re going to Milwaukee and after just 10 hours of sleep in two days he was on his way back to the Mets a very happy and excited Ike Man

As if Ike's day was not enough my boy Kirk Nieuwenhuis had a spectacular day on fire turning on those fastballs and hitting 2 singles a double and a triple and 5 RBIs. No Met since DWright did it 8 years agio in 2005 has a Met had 4 hits and 5 RBIs in a single game. If Ike and Kirk can keep that going we could have a very fun second half of Mets baseball. We need Kirk out there every day now and we need more Recker and less Buck. In addition I need for Murph to get it back he has been having trouble lately at the plate I am not worried about the Irish Hammer just want him to return to form and that would include improving on the fielding errors he has suffered lately Daniel is better than that

Finally Zack Wheeler, in his five-inning outing he gave up three runs although only one was earned, my God those Brewers play sloppy defense, seriously. On the plus side I liked that he increased the percentage of fastballs he threw. I think it was 80 fastballs thru 95+ pitches averaging about 95mph and hitting 97 mph and as I said I liked the amount of fastballs he tossed I mean he just kept throwing his fastball and you need to understand he needs to throw more fastballs cause the more he does the better he is going to get trying to locate it. His command still troubling him but last night I thought he looked more comfortable and I am sure having seen him pitch way better that and his command will come once he settles in he just needs to focus on getting ahead of guys more. The pitch count also bothered me 100 pitches in just five innings just does not cut it but to his credit and although he did do a masterful job working out of a bases loaded jam ya just have to think maybe he had to work a little too hard to get out of that inning.

The All-Star teams will be announced at 6:30 tonight. David Wright and Matt Harvey is pretty much a shoe in to represent the Mets, still we won’t know the starting pitching assignment till NL manager Bruce Bochy makes that call which won’t happen till the day before the game on the 16th.
 
So yesterday Anthony Recker was in the lineup to catch Marcum but then Shaun Marcum said he preferred to throw to John Buck, Collins said ok and made the switch. How did that work out for you guys? :p No worries Anthony will catch Hefner today,

Josh Satin will play first you remember I told you guys the thinking was to possibly use Josh there to give Ike off against the lefties not a platoon just a shot here and there. The kid deserves to be in the lineup.

If you saw kirk Nieuwenhuis bang his knee getting tied up with Eric Young Jr not to worry he has it taped up but says is fine’ he is not in the lineup today but not only against the leftie Kirk did not suffer serious damage.

Checking in on how Matt den Dekker is doing in Vegas for his first game, well he tripled thank you very much

Congrats to DWright and Matt Harvey on their selection to the All Star game! Certainly not unexpected, but good to see, nonetheless. John Buck did provide a lot of the Mets offense on Saturday, but alas it was not enough to overcome the less than stellar start by Marcum and the not so good bullpen support. Hopefully, today will be better, Let's go Mets!!
 
Nice start by Hefner yesterday his ERA now at 1.64, the best of any pitcher in the major leagues.

So not a bad idea putting Josh Satin in he went 3-for-4, drove in one run and scored another. Like I been sayin we gotta find a spot for this kid as often as we can. Prolly see him again on Tuesday against another leftie Barry Zito in SF, not sure where yet maybe first again will know later today. Finding a spot for Josh is difficult; Ike is secure at first except against lefties but the problem with that is that Ike hits lefties pretty well. In fact in Vegas he hit against the left handed pitchers more than the right handed so it’s a tough call. Then there is second, I watched Josh play second in spring training down in Florida earlier this year he was ok but not much range so he will have to work with Tuffell a bit to fill in for Murphy against the lefties. Then there is the outfield which would be a stretch for Josh he has had little to no experience out there. I think we should get him in the outfield catching balls and seeing what he can do out there Let’s see what he’s got what kind of arm does he have can he throw well from out there then maybe we can give him a shot at an outfield in a game sometime soon. I am thinkin the corners casue I seriously doubt he can cover the center right off leave that to Newsie

So after Bobby Parnell's second four-out save of the season yesterday someone tell me why he is not in the All Star game?

We won’t see Angel Pagan in SF he is out for the season after undergoing left hamstring surgery.

It was quite a trip to Frisco yesterday, all day we did not know when or where the plane was going to land after that horrible crash out there, it was thought the Mets would have to fly into Oakland, then bus to Frisco but late in the day got permission to fly to San Francisco.The boys got a look at that crashed plane and it was a scary site they could see the wreckage as they touched down.

....Scott Hairston is back in the division, after his trade from the Cubs to the Nats for a minor league pitcher. Have to hope he doesn't come back to haunt us. Hefner has been very good lately, showing how real pitching works, not throwing. Satin has been as hot as the weather! Nice 4 out save by Parnell, need a good series on the coast, Let's go Mets!!
 
Two more road wins, one a marathon of a game lasting 15 innings, with a superb job by the bullpen, and last night Dillon Gee held the fort long enough until Marlon Byrd was able to launch a bases loaded HR to give the Mets a five run lead, which proved to be enough of a margin to get the Mets another victory. We go for today's win with Zach on the mound against his former organization. Let's go Mets!!
 
Now that's the Zack Wheeler I have been waiting to see again he just looked so much more comfortable, he was aggressive throwing strikes and had great movement on his fastball and how about that execution no overthrowing for Zack last night. Just a thrill to see him pitch yesterday

Sooo let’s talk about Matt Harvey we now know that he will miss his next start and Carlos Torres will pitch against the Pirates on Saturday. Lotta discussion as to why starting with Collins sayin the motivation is primarily to keep Harvey’s innings without having to shut him down at the end of the season. Well of course we want Matt to pitch late into the season so, ok. But there are much more important issues here, Matt has a blister on the fleshy part of his index finger which truly contributed to his less than great start of late I mean you try and pitch with a blister it aint easy. But then to make matters worse now he also has a hang nail digging into his middle finger. The thing is the only way his blister is gonna get better is by resting and not tossing balls. To me if he is not completely healed I don’t want him pitching in that All Star game and risk making things worse. We need him to pitch for us, The NY Mets and not the National League, so unless he is all healed by Tuesday fuck the all star game let him heal and come back after the break. Of course he could be ok by All Star break day and we all want Matt Harvey to start in that game I know for an absolute fact how excited he is to be pitching that day ”awesome” is the word he used. It would not only be great for Matt but also the fans at CitiField and the team BUT just don’t let it affect his availability for the rest of the season. In other pitching news I am sure you have all heard that Marcum will undergo season-ending surgery Monday to deal with that numbness and coldness in his pitching hand and Torres will take over that spot in the rotation until Jonathon Niese returns. Not a fan of Marcum’s so although I want the best for him I am not sorry to see him go, I like what I see in Torres. Scott Atchison will be activated from the disabled list and join the Mets when the team resumes play after the All-Star break next Friday against the Philadelphia Phillies. Frank Francisco continues to have problems with that nebulous thingy and although doctors cannot detect any structural damage he is not close to returning. Take as long as you need Frankie we are fine with Bobby. Tim Byrdak is closer to returning although he still has not thrown back-to-back days yet with Class A St. Lucie. Byrdak and Pedro Feliciano both have the same deal goin they do not sustain their velocity over multiple starts, and that has to be better before they can come back.

Travis d'Arnaud not yet running full speed yet still has discomfort running on regular ground, but we are told that is a normal thing and is in no way a setback

Lucas Duda and Justin Turner should both be back at the end of the month. JT is hitting off a tee and soft-tossing. Lucas Duda has started outdoors activities, although he has not yet swinging a bat.

Finally it's not always easy being Kevin Burkhardt when he is trying to do his interviews I have seen a lot of goofy stuff over the years but I really loved this one with Hefner, check out what the guys in the background were ding and Nieuwenhuis clearly in one of his playful moods.



 
Just a quick couple of things

Justin Turner is feeling great as he continues with his rehab assignment in St. Lucie; he has been on the disabled list since June 17 with that pesky intercostal strain. JT said he thinks he could be next weekend's series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Gonna be great to have JT back.

In what was inevitable and rather expected the Mets demoted Jordany Valdespin and sent to Vegas last night; it was done to give us an extra bullpen arm with the pen so overworked (poor dears) reliever Scott Atchison will join the Mets today. We all expected the demotion, everyone but Spin that is, this week anyways he has pretty much just been dead weight around here for the last month or more he was the last man on the roster and has not been used much at all mostly cause he is really not good enough to play in a full game he was just too unstable out there never knew what he might do. Like the game on Friday when Collins made that weird decision tom take Hefner out after he had been pitching so well and decided to put Jordany in as pinch hitter. Spin decided to try and bunt on then struck out so he completely fucked that up. Why Collins picked Spin for that is a mystery he said he wanted to try and get something going with the tie and was looking for a hit but stupidly went with Jordany. Speaking of that bunt attempt Jordany did not get that call from the bench and Collins was not amused. Even if the pen was not so overworked Jordany would have been toast anyways once Turner comes back. Jordany was always an idiot of sorts but did showed great promise at first but sunk rather quickly at the plate and his offense was nothing to shout about either having failed miserably at second and shortstop. I am told that Jordany was not expecting that call last night and was really upset in fact he had tears in his eyes so ya gotta feel bad for the kid but he needs to put on his big boy pants and move on perhaps now he will get more at bats in AAA and improve. In any event he’s Wally Backman; s problem now. Maybe Wally can make a man out of Jordany.

Matt Harvey threw a bullpen session Friday, he looked great and the blister on finger is no longer bothering him and should be available to pitch in the All-Star Game on Tuesday.

With the Mets off on the break SNY will broadcast the Cyclones game live on Thursday, we have not had a great start to our season this year 4 and half games out in last place but that can change quickly we have a ton of great talent. THe Mets had a nice finish to the first half (roughly) with a 6-3 road trip including a West Coast stop. Dillon Gee pitched another good game Sunday and the Mets jumped up with 3 in the first and Gee made it stand up with a save from Parnell. Looking forward to watching DWright and Matt Harvey in the All Star game!!

Syam mentioned it and now its official Matt Harvey will be the starting pitcher in this years All Star game he will be joined by David Wright at 3rd David will bat cleanup. The last player to start an All-Star Game on the mound in his home ballpark was Roger Clemens with Houston in 2004. What a great time for Mets fans could not be happier, all I wanted was to be sure he was totally ok from his blister and hang nail issues and since he is go get em Matt with another win for the National league

Just a comment on the fans booing David Wright all weekend in Pittsburg over his choices for the Home Run Derby, it’s fine it was all in fun you know the whole rivalry thing; everyone knows what a talent and all around great guy David is and you have to think they are a little jealous that he is a Met and not a Pirate. It’s all good they were just havin some fun with David who by the way got a kick out of it as well he totally got the whole thing and laughed it off like the pro he is. Terry Collins was upset by it which surprised me, come on Terry, lighten up.

Just one more comment on Jordany Valsespin, I resisted writing more on his little tantrum after being demoted firstly cause it was told to me in private, I will say that some of what you may have read about that incident is fact and some is exaggerated, and now it is all over the web on every sports blog there is. BUT now that he has come out publically and played it down denying g most of what happened we can add liar along with self-centered, egotistical, unstable and immature. While no Mets official has said this to me I am going to say that I would be shocked if we ever see that fool in a Mets uniform ever again. He is not welcome here in NY I will be speaking with Matt den Dekker this weekend after the AAA All Star Game and will ask about how it is going between Backman and Valdespin. Ya know, sort of how when you pass a car wreck on the road and can’t help but stop and look at it :p
 
Glad you liked that Syam it was fun and it shows what a lot of fans may not realize and that is that Harvey has an awesome sense of humor. He seems a little stiff sometimes especially in interviews but he is really a funny guy when you get to know him.

Back after the All-Star Game the boys return today at 5 p.m. for workouts at Citi Field. Harvey and Wright will not be there today and will be given the extra day off after the HRD and ASG

Justin Turner wants everyone to know he is feeling great he is in AA Binghamton now and yesterday he had a great day playing second base with a pair of doubles and run scored and gosh oh mighty he was part of Binghamton's first triple play in six years. The only bummer was his hotel does not carry MLB and so no AAA All-Star game. JT still sees himself back in the Mets lineup this weekend fully healed and raring to go. Can’t wait to have him back in NY I have missed that kid

Touched base with Matt den Dekker last night and he too is getting close to returning. He has noticed that he still does not have his full mobility back yet but he was told that would take some time maybe even as long as a year but he has no pain at all now and his wrist is completely healed. What will prolly happen is he will be a September call-up once rosters expand, keeping in mind that he needs to be added to the 40-man roster this offseason in order to be protected from the Rule 5 draft. Other things Matt has been working on is his pitch recognition looking to make better contact and cut down on those pesky strikeouts. As to the load of outfielders getting promoted from Triple-A now like Nieuwenhuis, Brown and Lagares Matt keeps a positive outlook on his coming back and not dwelling on what could have been had he not been injured his thinking is things happen for a reason and is genially happy for the guys that got the opportunity to go up there and play. The key is to just keep working trying not to put too much pressure on himself.



Great night in Brooklyn last night where my Cyclones beat up on the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, Juan Gamboa hit the Cyclones first home run at MCU Park this season. And L.J. Mazzilli (Lees kid) added three hits to raise his average to .315, and (watch out for this kid) Seth Lugo picked up his second win of the year.



The Mets open a seven-game at home Friday; Jeremy Hefner goes against Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Kyle Kendrick. It’s Zack Wheeler and Cole Hamels on Saturday, and Matt Harvey and Cliff Lee match up Sunday.
 
And you never know which Phillies team you're gonna get: the one that can hit, or the one who can't.

I'll have to watch the late night replay tonight, as I have to go see a friend's community theater performance. The local weekly said he was 'hilarious!', so it should at least be fun.
