NY Mets 2014

Reminder early Mets Hot Stove this week show airs today,Thursday on SNY at 4:30 and repeats thru the week. Today Kevin is back with Andy Martino and John Harper, who will bring us up to date on what Alderson has been doing or should we say not doing other than throwing away outstanding players like Turner, yeah that still stings and sticks in my craw. KB is in favor of Cano coming to the Mets and he will interview are one and only new Met Chris Young. Lemme guess Chris you are here to help the Mets win a championship

Thanks sonny for the reminder... think if I remember correctly next week they do a daily winter meetings show and today the Mets made big news by agreeing with Yankee free agent center fielder Curtis Granderson on a four year, 60 mil deal. A little rich for me but when you take into account the absolute insanity of the ten years, 240 mil Seatle gave Robinson Cano... or the seven years(with an eighth year option) that the Yankees unfathomably gave Jacoby Ellsbury to defect from Boston, that could wind up worth being 169 mil, it's pretty much a bargain. I think Granderson will adjust to CitiField... just got too pull happy at Yankee Stadium and his average suffered greatly even though Curtis had two plus 40 home runs there. If we can get him to the .270-.280 hitter he was most of his Detroit career and get 25-30 homers and 100 RBI out of him it would be great. He does strike out a ton now so that's one area he'll have to adjust his hitting approach, with Citi not being nearly the left handed power friendly place Yankee Stadium is, though it is much fairer than it used to be since they brought in the fences. Curtis does have a good eye though and will take the walk, and still runs and fields well enough to put every day in center.

Finally some good news out of Metsville with the signing of Granderson. I also am leery of the 4h year, but that's what the market is bearing right now, so it's put up or shut up. One additional thing I like about this signing is besides his HR power, Curtis is also a good possible triples guy with his speed and Citi Field's large alleys. Stunned at the crazy contract for Cano. Obviously teams have the money to spend.

Chris Young runs well too and they will have more speed with Granderson as well. They do need to make a trade for one more bat, maybe one that can help solidify shortstop and one more pitcher but at least the fear they were only interested in coupon clipping and basement bargains is at least proving unwarranted. Granderson especially with the fourth year is as risk but if he could contribute something at least to what Marlon Byrd did, plus he runs better it will be a big help.

Well of course Granderson is a very good move so long as he does not turn into Jason Bay, come on it’s the Mets and that kinda stuff just happens to us :( let’s be honest his athleticism has been going down over the last couple seasons and he needs to cut back on those swings and misses but he is a threat and a presence in our lineup, he is a high end center fielder and ya have to love that we now have three quality center fielders. He has to stay healthy stop getting hit by so many pitches, he will make great protection for Wright. We know DWright is over the moon about the Granderson signing he is just thrilled, actually David spoke to Granderson back in October and told him he wanted to play with him and that was before the Mets showed interest So at least we seem to have some life at the meetings, but we have more work to do gotta get annoyer starting pitcher to at least get us thru the year without Harvey as well as a late inning relief pitcher, figure out first base and shortstop like Stephen Drew so don’t stop now Sandy keep it going and no more fuckin stupid moves like the one you made with Turner.

Speaking of Justin how sweet was it for him to have his walk up song played while he was at a club last night gotta love that sign of respect from the band

Juan Lagares knee issue is nothing serious he should be fine he had come back to New York to have his knee looked at. Lagares has been playing in winter ball for Las Aguilas Cibaenas and is hitting .342 in 28 games, with five doubles, a home run, 16 RBI and seven walks

Recker is enjoyin his off time

Happy first weeding anniversary to Daniel and Trish Murphy a year already, wow

Ops, sorry Murph I meant Daniel and Tori Murphy. Trish is Daniels sister and if I had a nickel for the times I have confused the names of two of the three most important women in Daniels life. #-o Love em both gotta stop getting em mixed up.

You will be getting a good guy in Granderson with good speed and defense. Only problem will be is that he K's a lot but he does give D Wright some protection in the lineup.

I am happy Granderson is staying in NYC. Cleary the Yankees I think didn't really want him long term or at all.

I hope he doesn't turn into another Bay and doesn't suffer a lot of injuries.

I think his k rate had a lot to do with it.

His injuries were pretty freakish... broken bone in the hand. Bay never got over his injuries here, starting with that season ending concussion. Great guy, just never was the same player. Granderson is really impressive make up wise, and if can remember he's at Citi Field, a fairer park in the past couple of years but still not nearly the left handed power hitter dream Yankee Stadium is...he'll be fine so long as he cuts down some on the strikeouts. Impressive stat is that in both his big home run years with the Yankees Curtis hit 17 and 20 home runs respectively on the road, so the power is legitimate and he hit 30 homers his last year in Detroit at a decidedly non home run hitter's park. So 30 homers thereabouts is very conceivable.

Very interested in seeing what Sandy Alderson will do this week down in the Winter Meetings in Florida. Hoping he doesn't move Daniel Murphy even if it allows Eric Young Jr. to play second. I wouldn't trade Murphy at all unless it was part of a big trade to acquire a foundation piece, not just a solid role player. Daniel has really come into his own and unless it overall improves the Mets for the long haul losing someone so dedicated and beloved as Murph just shouldn't happen. Alderson expects to see activity in the Davis/ Duda front though he mentions if nothing is done now they've got until spring training, it's not now or never though they would like a resolution sooner rather than later. Still really wary about trading Ike...unfortunately with what he's gone through in New York it might be good for him to get a change of scenery, but he doesn't want to leave. I bet sonny knows his state of mind on this very well, hopefully he can add his perspective on Ike's thinking.

SNY doing a daily Winter Meetings wrap up like they've done previously? I KNOW sonny would have he answer for this!

Yes KB will have a show beginning tonight at 7pm on SNY every night this week from the meetings I will try and have more info later

As to Muphy getting traded its still a tough call but Alderson wont rule it out and I know he is thinking about the $5.2 Mill Daniel expects and deserves this year, Btw what happened to all that money we were supposed to have after those payrolls coming off the books.? If they are stupid enough to let Murph go it had better be worth it, letting the 2nd best offensive player on the team including lead in doubles would be hard to justify. Alderson himself said that we need more players who can hit to all parts of the field and he specified "Guys like Murphy, we need more like that" so why would you let him go unless its a really good trade, REALLY GOOD!.
Not worried about Daniel I would like him to stay a Met but he will thrive where ever he plays.

As to Ike I have written already he does not want to leave the team, don't think I should go to far into that subject for now a lot of what I know is private and personal info.

May have more on Turner this week cant write about it yet but watch this space.

What I saw about the Mets and Turner will have sonny stewing and I'm very disgusted that they used a lame ass, totally flat out false lie in that they let Turner go because of a propensity of "not hustling"? So bogus on it's own lack of merit, but when you just may be forced to give the starting shortstop job to Ruben Tejada, who clearly failed to play hard in 2013 and went from a core player to an almost afterthought.. now they might go into 2014 with Tejada at shortstop and yet just throw Turner under the bus? JT who is always smiling, playing hard, doing what's asked of him and has such a great personality, and is so beloved by the players? I just can't wait to see what sonny has to say.. it's gonna be good!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah a couple of the boys heard that bull shit story the Mets used as an excuse for kicking him to the curb it was so ludicrous that I did not want to write about it but now that it is out there lemme just say that NO ONE buys into that,it just added fuel to the fire that is burning with the players over what happened. Most of the boys are disappointed and dismayed by what the team did to Justin it was a bitter pill to take by his brothers on the team. To hear someone say he did not hustle is hurtful to the guys on the team and me he always hustled and was a big time clutch player. He was among some of our outstanding hardnosed Mets utility infielders like McEwing, Miller, Phillips and Martinez yes I am comparing Justin to those guys and why no, he belongs on that list.

Justin Turner has been a central character in Mets baseball since he started with the team, although some have characterized him as a secondary role player no one denies that he was a player who had a large impact on the club since he started with the Mets. I am here to say that there's no doubting that he has made his mark on the Mets over the past few seasons.

There are too many great JT moments but a couple of things come to mind like That walk against Heath Bell last year which was among one of the most valuable walks we have had when you consider the length of the at bat as well as the fact that they won it on a Nieuwenhuis walk-off single two batters later and this one definitely deserves to go down in the books. Then there was that pinch hit walk off double which was the biggest hit of Justin's career with a huge .40 WPA on that one swing. Plus it was the highest WPA game of his career as I recall it was at .580 something , it may have been the only walk off hit of his career If you were to measure by WPA this was the biggest hit of Justin's career. Yup JT eats clutch for breakfast

Justin’s late-inning go get em, who else would you wanna put in there, success stories is amongst the best we have seen in a long long time he will be dearly missed by the fans but most of all by his brothers on the Mets he will always be remembered for his outstanding good humor and team spirit, if you had a bad day you could just go and talk to Justin and it would not be long before you felt a whole lot better. He has the reputation as a guy that so often battled grinded grissioned his way through crucial at bats until he could get er done. Yup one of the few things I am grateful to Omar Minaya for its grabbing Justin off of waivers from the Orioles back in 2010, it's been a heck of a ride

Many Mets are bothered by losing Turner and that includes some Cyclone players who recalled when JT played a rehab game back in July last year with us and were so impressed by his warmth, attitude, professionalism and dedication to the game and like Dwight before him left a really great impression on those kids.

Lastly I firmly believe as a tribute we must stop the pie throwing cause it belongs to Justin and no one should take that over it goes with him.

JT just funny and warm a heck of a ball player, team mate and heck of a great friend

Great tribute, sonny...JT played the game seriously but never took himself too seriously, just loved to have fun, endearingly goofy and whatever lies some of the Mets front office may put out those who were fortunate to have him as a teammate will always have him dear to their hearts. I really doubt Terry Collins would have a bad thing to say about JT. I understand what you say about the pie thing but if his teammates think it's a good way to honor him by continuing that tradition in some way, well I'll be happy to see the callous corporate assholes who spread that lie get the middle finger tribute by keeping JT's tradition alive. I really think JT deserves a retraction and apology from the Mets organization for trying to shred his reputation with that utter falsehood but I know he'll land someplace and do well...yep he was our modern super Joe Mc Ewing, and it's sad he won't be part of any Mets revival but read somewhere that Fredi Gonzalez of Atlanta loves him, so JT could find himself enduring those tomahawk chops but wherever he winds up the club will get someone who will be endearing and beloved and who indeed WILL play hard all the time, and provide a good number of clutch moments. He may indeed at best be a complementary player but teams that win need good ones who know how to play the game and JT absolutely fits that... plus his quality personality just rubs off on everyone and they'll all love him wherever he lands.

THe Grandy Man will have his press conference here soon. You guys will be getting of the true good guys in baseball.

Yep, no doubt he will be a great clubhouse guy. Then again JT was one, and look how some punkass Met "insiders" just trashed his reputation when the Mets let him go. I just hope Curtis can stay healthy, and adjust his swing to remember it's not Yankee Stadium so the strikeouts get cut down. I did post a few back in his 40+ homer years with the Yankees Grandy hit 17 and 20 home runs on the road respectively so his power isn't just Yankee Stadium inflated. I think around 30 is very doable and his professionalism and class makeup will only help the club...just hope it rubs off on the powers that be in the Mets organization! I do know that DWright recruited him heavily and loves him, and having both in that lineup and clubhouse will be very good for especially their younger teammates.

He has the power so it wasn't just the help of Yankee stadium but his k rate affected his final year hear no doubt about it.
And make no mistake about it,he will be a good clubhouse leader.
Best of luck to you guys.

I was really impressed by Grandy watching him interviewed by KB on the Met's Hot Stove Show... really an engaging, intelligent guy who if healthy will be a great addition to the Mets. He really is the type of player and clubhouse presence this team needs, especially with our younger players. As well I think the point promoted on the Hot Stove show that one of the roster spots in the rotation should go to Jennry Mejia was pretty spot on... he should be rested now and the spur problems have been dealt with, so if he is fully healthy come spring besides acquiring one outside veteran(NOT Manny Colon, not at all.... Johann Santana would have to be proven healthy and I don't know the Mets want to wait til spring training to get a veteran arm) Jennry should get first shot at the fifth spot. Before long we know Montero, Syndegaard, and da Grom will be knocking at the door, with some others like Gabriel Ynoa, Steven Matz and Mike Fulmer not far behind.

Also have to add that I just saw that Nick Evans signed a minor league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks... good luck to Nick on possibly making the Diamondbacks next spring though with the addition of Mark Trumbo today in the three way trade with the White Sox and San Diego adding slugger Mark Trumbo( also ideally a first baseman now playing left field) other than a bench role don't know how he fits into Arizona's plans. Hope he does well in spring training and opens somebody's eyes at least... Nick deserves a full shot.
