NY Mets 2014

Yup I liked what I see in Grandy as well but I am holding off getting too excited till I see him in action He’s getting a little older and his performance has diminished his batting average is barely above .230 plus there are those strikeouts oh my goodness. So let’s go in with a little bit low expectations and hope he does not turn into Bay, Castillo or OMG Ollie? I need to see what he has to give us before getting too worked up. He sure did say all the right things at the press conference he seems to have done his homework on the team although I have to wonder if he really knows as much as he says he does about Mets young pitching for example. Of course my biggest concern is four years maybe three would have been ok but four is scary; he does not have a no trade clause in his deal so there is that. And how bout that comment that “He heard that true New Yorkers are Mets fans” holy cow what a thing to say and for sure when he plays at Yankee stadium in a Mets uniform he is going to get booed loud and clear before that remark there may have been a few cheers mixed in but not now. The only cheering will be coming from the Mets fans at those games. But Yankee fans always have a way of shouting down the Mets fans so expect a lot of boos; I love by the way the Mets and Yankees fans going at each other at both Citi and Yankee stadium it’s all in good fun and a hoot to see and hear.

Seriously thou he is a solid player although a flawed player but I have hopes that he will continue putting up numbers at Citi and let’s not forget we still don’t know how he will be protected prolly not as much as he was as a Yankee, still waitin for Collins to figure that out where he will play him but good chance he will follow Dwright although ya have to wonder if he is the right choice for cleanup, he and David need to protect one another. Collins is going to try and make tonight’s Hot Stove show along with Alderson so maybe he will hint on what he is thinking with regards to the lineup. Another thing is we know he can hit in tough ballparks and so Citi won’t intimidate him.

Saucy thanks for the encouragement for Nick Evans who may finally get the break he deserves; it may be a little while till he plays with the big boys on the DiamondBacks but he has been thru so much crap with the Dodgers and the Pirates things may finally going to go his way. I will keep you guys posted on how it goes with him

I'm pretty optimistic regarding Grandy... he's healthy now, the injuries were freakish, hit twice by pitches breaking bones but not structural like the knees or hamstring. He DOES have to cut down on his strikeouts...his last full year at Yankee Stadium he went over 40 homers but had an alarming 195 strikeouts and .230 average but I think he will adjust to CitiField. He's always going have a lot of strikeouts but if he can cut them to 130-150 his average should get back up to around .260-.270, and he is capable of at least. He said some people had congratulated him for signing with the Mets and told him that Mets fans were the "real" New York fans , and there is some truth to that to the extent New York always had a large NL following with the old Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants. A little fun to stir the pot for the next Subway Series and I guess he was a little bitter that the Yanks just let him go and signed Carlos Beltran instead but he really seems to appreciate the Mets interest in him and really seems happy to have signed with them. I would have preferred three years as well instead of four but it's not a backbreaking contract.... compared to other long term signings we've seen this winter it seems pretty budget friendly.

Working tonight but have Hot Stove set to tape this whole week...sometimes 6:30, others at 7 but will really be interested in Sandy Alderson and Terry Collin's take. I'm not happy with the Daniel Murphy rumors.... dear lord one even had the Yanks interested in him but at least good to hear ANY trade of Murph would only get done if the Mets can get a substantial return. Daniel is a very solid everyday second baseman and getting mid level crap for him isn't an option. If nothing great presents itself I want Murph back manning second base for some time to come.

You're welcome about Nick Evans... I just saw some info and wanted to bring it up here, especially since you got close with him while he was here and in the Mets system. And I'm glad JT is doing well... he'll wind up making some club very happy.... though his teammates are ALWAYS going to have to be on their toes for his merry hijinks and celebratory cream pies!;)

Winter meetings are just about over most of our fearless leaders are headin home later today that includes Sandy Alderson who did a nice job in making us more relevant next year. So with the signings of Curtis Granderson, Chris Young’s and, assuming he passes the physical, Bartolo Colon. The Colon signing was for me the most important move we made I am very satisfied with that. The rotation right now will be Niese, Colon, Wheeler and Gee with the fifth man still to be determined maybe a low base salary guy like Matsuzaka or Harang or my preference would be an internal candidate like Mejia, deGrom or Montero. Another important piece to our future pitching will be Noah Syndergaard who I expect will open the season at AAA Las Vegas we could see him sometime in June or July, as we did with Harvey and Wheeler.

Still left to do is figure out first base Ike is still very much available as a matter of fact this morning Sandy was having discussions about Ike so something could still happen today and the Mets could very well trade him leaving Duda to man first. Duda wining that job is something I am not thrilled about I still prefer Davis over Duda but it does not look like that will be the way the Mets go. Next will be Shortstop although they have sent Tejada to fitness camp (Duda went too) it is looking like a possibility he will be our SS however the Mets are still interested in picking up another player for that position so Tejada is not set in any stone for sure. Still need an addition to the relief but I am hoping we give some of our young arms a shot at that.

As to Colon I very much like that addition sure he’s not Matt Harvey but then who is? But he is more than enough to take Harvey's spot for the next year then we only have Colon one more year after that. His ERA over the last 3 years comes out to above 300. Some concerns are for his age he will be the oldest starting pitcher in baseball but it does not bother me terribly he has been very durable the last few seasons. As to his weight I am a bit but not overly concerned about that either. So no, we can’t allow ourselves to get caught up in his Homer Simpson like body or his age he did win 18 games last year and he is an extreme strikes thrower There is one thing I am bothered by and that is his PED past I have a low tolerance for that sort of thing. But back to the positive he will not give up a lot of runs and I really like that all of our young pitchers watch a guy who will throw strikes and win ball games with that awesome two seam fastball of his and a delivery which you wonder with the way he looks and his age how the heck does he do that?

If anything happens later especially with Davis I will try and jump in here and let you guys know. You can also watch Kevin Burkhardt wrap up the meetings live from Florida tonight at 7 on SNY Chris Carlin will also join in from here in New York.

Wasn't happy about the second year added to the deal for Colon, to me he's still out of shape and he was involved in with chemicals(Though looking at him it didn't do anything for him, lol!) but though he'll be 41 had a really good year with Oakland. I remember his stint with the Yankees a few years back, started out good but was dumped after he hit a streak where he was awful... not totally sold on him though he has had a good career, imagine if he had taken care of himself instead of coming in out of shape like that. going to the NL he should be fine for at least his first year and with Harvey out essentially for 2014 that's really just what we need, if he does okay in his second year it's a bonus.

I'm with sonny much preferring now that we have a solid veteran to let the young guys fight for the last spot. Sandy Alderson was adamant about it being too risky and imprudent to have two spots in the rotation to be given to rookies also because he wanted greater depth and flexibility in the system. He said one veteran leaves them the flexibility to allow for a young arm to compete and I'd rather go that way, especially with a Mejia, who should be healthy for spring training and off his impressive stint late last season should get first crack.... with so many young guys knocking on the door, most notably tremendous control artist Rafael Montero and spectacular fireballer Noah Syndegaard, who sonny talked among others our Mets will have the flexibility in a year or so to make a huge trade if they wish... haul a super impact young bat.

I really think Ike Davis is the best of the remaining first base possibilities other teams are looking for... I really wish Ike could have lived up to his promise here but that inexplicably horrible first half last season I think killed any chance of that unfortunately. But in 2012 after a first half full of woes fueled by understandable circumstances( rust from returning from his 2011 season ending foot injury plus his battle with Valley Fever) he had an incredible second half ending up though the average was only .227(a lot better hitter though after June 1 of that year than that)ending up with 32 homers in a not overly hitter friendly park( though much fairer than before the fences were moved in) with 90 RBI and generally a very slick fielder at first. I definitely am happy that Sandy Alderson does recognize his offensive potential though he feels likely it would be better realized somewhere else but it is significant enough to warrant a strong return...as he said they're NOT giving Ike Davis away. I'm sure in the next days or few weeks that will play out and hopefully he can net a really nice component...most likely another player would have to be dealt as well.

I like Lucas Duda, I think sonny likes him personally but he is too nice at times, has TOO little of an ego and has seemed to shrink from seizing the moment for whatever reason, whether being used in left , right or at first. He has such a nice swing, is a really nice kid. I remember how impressive he was in his callup half season, hitting .290 with then homers and 50 RBI. The kid looks strong, and is strong... maybe he can gain confidence knowing he's the guy but having the addition of Curtis Granderson to take the pressure of of him batting behind David Wright. Will be interesting seeing what plays out there but I'm also happy the Mets appear to be holding onto Daniel Murphy, who really deserves respect. Sonny of course loves him and it's easy to see why.... Murph's got a great personality plus his dedication and professionalism have made his transition to second base impressive. He still needs to improve on defensive consistency but he's gotten a LOT better there and unless we were getting gold in return why the fuck trade one of your best players?! One thing that really shone about Murph from last year is how when DWright was out how heartily Murph embraced a leadership role to give an example to the younger guys. New York Met fans have gotta love and appreciate Murph!

Another terrific post from our boy saucy don’t ya just love his writings? :=D:
I’m especially impressed and pleased about his knowledge of Ike Davis a player I have particular fondness for. And while we continue to wait for any trade news we just continue to hope he stays with us here in NY. I thought Kevin Burkhardt had a great thought of why not let Duda and Davis battle it out in spring training which makes good sense, are you listening Sandy?
As for Duda: Saucy is correct I like the kid a lot I first met him back in Brooklyn in 2007 a shy very quiet kept to himself sorta kid and although he did not say much I knew it was just his shyness not that he wasn’t a friendly dude at all. Saucy referred to him as not having much of an ego but that’s just his shyness which is so endearing and I hope will never change, he just did not talk all that much certainly not about himself, that’s just The Dude. As to his being strong saucy is right about that his body is like granite.
I was impressed by him from the start I remember the monster homer he hit in our finals in Brooklyn to beat the dreaded SI Yankees. In fact to my knowledge the Duda's hitting streak that year still to this day remains the longest in the team’s history. He went on to single A and I lost track of him for a while but then he went to AAA Bisons, which was in Buffalo then, and we reconnected. I think he homered in his six games in a row He went on to hit 18-20 homers had a ton of doubles something like 25 and musta batted in something like 50 runs. He was named Bisons Most Valuable Player. But then we he came to us in Flushing in 2013 he had a rough time of it in the outfield and even his batting suffered and some thought it was because of his problems in that big outfield but never the less he went back to Buffalo but then when he returned he started to show real promise and became a much more rounded player productive and much more secure in his belief that he was a big leaguer. Last year Murph (a big Duda fan) said “watch out for the Dude you will see big things out of him” that sorta happened but not as much as Daniel thought it would so maybe this year it will.
As to first base next year as much as I like Duda I still believe Davis to be the better defensive first baseman over the two and as for offensive they both have their days Ike more than Lucas, so it’s almost a wash there. But I wanna keep Lucas but with Davis at first so dono how that will go.

Of course the Davis trade talk was hot and heavy for a while but cooled considerably towards the end of the winter meetings and Alderson did say we are not going to give Ike away he’s worth too much to us. Ike staying in NY got better when Loney signed with the Rays, that was one of the places we all thought Ike might end up as well as Pittsburgh and Houston but that seems to have sizzled out. Pretty much the Brewers are about the only team right now still interested in Ike, I know that Alderson and Milwaukee GM were still talking as the meetings ended.

Saucy also mentioned Noah Syndegaard who we got from the Toronto Blue Jays last December with Travis d'Arnaud for R.A. Dickey, I have watched him pitch and yes he is gonna be awesome all he needs to do, and he will tell you this, is to work on changeup, he has already made great progress with a very impressive fastball and oh by the way has the command to go with it, not a bad curveball either very decent in fact. So yes, like I told you guys way back about Dickey when I first saw him as well as Harvey and Wheeler I have another one for you to watch for and that is Syndergaard for sure, he will also bring some terrific presence to the clubhouse he is a real friendly good great personality and will fit right in with our boys.

Lastly can we all agree that Burkhardt did an outstanding job as always reporting on the winter meetings can’t wait till we are all in Florida getting ready for 2014 can you taste it yet?

Just wanted to add something to above post regarding Duda. The other advantage Ike has is his ability to run the bases better than Lucas who's big hulking body keeps him from running as fast as Ike. I would not recommend getting in his way when he is running; as Recker jokingly said "I would not want to be poor catcher trying to protect home plate with Duda barreling down from Third base

Ike's not fast by any means but then Duda is really sl-oo-oo-ow!;) I do think Duda has to play first base if he's with the Mets, trouble is I really want Ike to get a fair shot to prove he can be the guy he has shown flashes of being. I hope whoever wins does a good job and stays at first base with the Mets for a long time!

Really funny thing though that it's Anthony Recker saying that about the Dude.... he's a big tank himself, lol in a collsion they'd bounce off each other it's such a toss up who's the stronger one!

It’s all in the timing and being an the right place right time, had you come with us to Dunkin Dounuts on 42nd this morning you would have found Daniel Murphy and Zack Wheeler behind the counter giving away free Mets tix and selling coffee

Pitchers and Catchers report to PSL 2 months from today…

105 Days until OpeningDay14

Well, not all that enthused by the Colon signing, however, I was pleasantly surprised last year with Latroy Hawkins' contributions, so maybe, Colon can give us some good starts, even at his age. I think there may more stuff done this week leading into the Christmas time period. I thing teams really want to get a lot of their off season acquisitions done before January. Hopefully Santa Alderson has something in our stockings for Christmas.

That Zack or Dillon Gee with Daniel? It's gotta be fun for the to go out and do fun stuff like that promoting the team, really have to keep Murph with the Mets unless we get bowled over. I would have only gone one year with Colon, but more importantly I still hear some penny pinching talk regarding other players only coming in if the Mets can get rid of salary. Would it freaking kill them to have a budget of 95-100 million in New York City, the biggest freaking market in the country? They've spent in the past, not saying they should go New York Yankee crazy and play checkbook baseball but I thought they were doing much better after the Madoff thing after a judge ruled they aren't going to be held liable for all those Madoff millions... true the salary structure in baseball is out of whack but in the coming years that great pitching they have will become much more expensive. They are going to have to swallow hard and pay the big bucks to retain their arms in two or three years... at least the one great positive is the depth of great young starting pitching but it would be nice if they groomed some more high quality position players. One thing I heard about trading Ike Davis is they want controllable young pitching but don't we have that already in our system?

I just want the front office to be aggressive AND smart, and Sandy has done some great stuff getting Zack Wheeler, Travis d'Arnaud and Noah Syndegaard essentially for Carlos Beltran and RA Dickey so there is the potential for that. I think Curtis Granderson is a good step, and they really had to add a pitcher the caliber of a Bartolo Colon( though not thrilled with his chemical use past, though you sure can't tell he may have cheated by his still portly body). The Mets shouldn't give out a whole bunch of contracts that crush future flexibility either... but enough already with the defensiveness about spending. If someone like Stephen Drew can be had for three years, 45-50 mil I'd do it however.... they don't have a similar two way shortstop (at least not one who can drive the ball offensively like he does and he is solid defensively) in their system, and it's short term enough they can develop more depth and not tie up budgetary flexibility to pay their hotshot young pitchers down the road as they will have to.

And yes, sonny.... can't wait for spring training and the sound of "play ball'!

Saucy, that's Zack and what a terrific day yesterday with Murph and Wheeler, I wrote some about it yesterday the boys were in NY giving away Mets tickets hitting a couple of Dunkin donuts and ending up at Models before tapping off the night at the Garden with a Knicks game which the Knicks unfortunately lost. Memo to Knicks, Time Outs ya ever heard of them it might have won you the game last night  The whole day was the brainchild of the one and only Jay Horwitz who orchestrated everything including some awesome seats at the Garden

I wanna mention as I do every year that tomorrow is Citi field coat The Mets will host their annual holiday coat drive on Wednesday at Citi Field from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET. you can drop off coats at the Mets Team Store adjacent to the Jackie Robinson Rotunda. If you donate a coat you will receive a voucher for one pair of tickets to a select Mets game in April 2014, and a coupon for 15 percent off regularly priced merchandise in the Mets Team Store.

As to Murph and his prep for next season he will get going in mid January starting with some lifting with Brother Jonathan he wants to wait and not rush it this year wants to give his body a good rest he played a lot of games last year. Daniel thinking is he wants to work on his Strike zone discipline wants to be a little aggressive and not swinging at marginal pitches, he also feels he should be able to get on base more he for sure thinks he does not walk enough, but he is looking at subtle adjustments like to stop swinging at marginal pitches ya know like the ones that are just on the corner early in the count. He wants to break the habit of when he does get ahead on the count getting more aggressive and then expanding the zone and swinging at pitches that he feels he is not dangerous on. So what he wants to see is early in the count like 0-0 1-0 and the more positive counts like 3-1 or 2-0 and just tighten up that strike zone and stat swinging at pitches that he can do damage with instead of just hitting. It’s important to Daniel that he manage his work load in spring training basically save some of up for the regular season

Working with his brother Jonathan is a tradition with the boys been doing it for a few years now Jonathan in case you did not know is Daniels younger brother who plays center field currently in the Twins minor league system. I have watched him play many times and there many similarities yet they are polar opposites in some ways. For one thing he runs like lightning for sure he runs better than his older bro. But he is not a natural hitter like Daniel but has a great glove We are still not sure where Jonathan will play next year still to be determined

So Murph what did you think of the fans reaction yesterday

In the above post I wrote about Daniel Murphy and Zack Wheeler out on the town giving away Mets tickets then later they played host to kids party and Murph did his best Santa with Zack as his helper elf

So here is Murphy’s transition to Santa yesterday or at least the family friendly ones I can show you :D

Before and after

Santa and his elf helper Zack

No Jay you may not sit on Santa’s knee

Great pics, sonny! Murph and Zack certainly seemed to be having fun the past few days with the Dunkin Donuts and other stuff plus this great Mets holiday tradition. Also nice to see that Murph as a veteran with this Mets club had Zack, a rookie with sky is the limit potential, along with him... glad Zack, who's from the Atlanta area stayed around and could be part of this. Was he asked or did he volunteer? And we can't forget the Met's longtime public relations maven Jay Horwitz who's always a big part of events like this!

Yup Saucy they made a great team the kids ate it all up Daniel is awesome around kids he just loves em.
On this week’s Mets Hot Stove hosted by Kevin Burkhardt Steve returns with an interview with Murphy and Wheeler it’s still being edited not sure what it will contain yet but a must see for sure.

During the party it began to snow and Santa Murph went outside to check it out or was he waitin for his reindeer to pick him up? Not sure could be ;)

Gotta love the bell Daniel has
I just cracked up at that big ole lovable goof ball ringing that itty bitty bell. :D

Don't forget Mets Hot Stove is back tonight and besides Steve talking with Murphy and Wheeler Kevin Burkhardt will talk about what is new with Ike Davis As I told you guys Kevin would like to see the Mets give Duda and Ike a shot at first during spring training let the best man win he feels that would be the best way to settle the first base job and I totally agree more tonight. 7pm SNY

Saw Beltran's press conference yesterday, glad to have him on board for us but I always think taking pot shots at former teams is a bad thing, just me of course.

Yeah Ninja, I do understand why Beltran was ticked off though... he felt the team on certain things like the Walter Reed Hospital thing and his knee problems the organization was just seeming to for whatever reason put him in the worst possible light. The Wilpons definitely while have put up in bringing in Mike Piazza, Pedro Martinez , Carlos Delgado, Carlos Beltran, Johann Santana... they have sucked since the Madoff fiasco but hopefully things are looking up over the next couple of years. But they have done or allowed some odd things too and definitely were wrong to not give Carlos Beltran the benefit of the doubt. It comes time though to let go of stuff like this, turn the page and just be the better man and forget all the crap and I wish Carlos had done that as well.

He has wanted to be a Yankee.. before he signed with the Mets he and of all people then agent Scott Boras offered the Yankees a discount that would have paid him less than he ultimately accepted with the Mets. He's still a good clubhouse guy and top flight clutch hitter and if healthy while not the fielder he was as a younger player he'll do a solid job when he plays right field. Good though he will have the opportunity to DH occasionally to help keep his knees strong.

Merry Christmas to sonny, ninja, gtru, Thad and everyone else contributing or reading this thread. The best to you and your families this Christmas and holiday season and a safe, happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!

I would like to second Saucy's wishes for all of you guys it was an interesting and fun year in Metsville and look forward so much to what our boys will being us in 2014. Championship? well hey, ya never know ;) and even if they don't we know we can count on the same spirit of determination hard work and energy that make our Mets the one and only Amazons.
