NY Mets 2014

Disappointing split squad losses for the Mets today 11-5 and 5-2 but best news from the day was in the 5-2 game Mets starter Jennry Mejia, who had season ending surgery to remove bone chips in the elbow late last year opened up with three strong innings, allowing only one unearned run, one hit, two walks and three strikeouts in three innings. Completely pain free throwing sine the end of the 012 season.... really puts in a great start to his bid to become the Mets fifth starter. He of course is respected by his teammates and coaches for his hard working, unselfish nature and really wants to be used as a starter instead of out of the bullpen, but says he will do what's asked of him and help his team any way he can. Just happy to see Jennry showing he's back to the form that had the Mets excited a few years back ..he pitched wonderfully in several starts last year even with the pain from the elbow chips but he was wisely shut down and was urged to just get the cleanup done. It looks he's on his way back and throwing free and easy...just another reason for the Mets organization and fans to get excited about the potential of their arms in not only this season but in seasons to come!

Mets-Cardinals ended their spring training meeting Friday with a 5-5 tie highlighted by an RBI single from highly touted(especially offensively) prospect Wilmer Flores.... basic thing with Wilmer is can they find him a position and can he be at least adequate because he can hit in his sleep and the power potential can develop, is capable now of 15-20 homers and a good number of booming doubles in the gaps and rocket doubles down the lines.

Mets got homers from Andrew Brown and Anthony Recker as well... David Wright and Daniel Murphy played their first spring training games and were pretty quiet offensively. Daisake Matsuzaka had an awful time starting the game giving up two runs on six hits in two innings. John Lannan, also brought into camp on a minor league contract to battle for the fifth spot in the rotation was a little better but still shaky, allowing two runs on three hits. Performing much better were Rafael Montero, Stephen Matz, Vin Black and Jeurys Familia in relief.

Two wins in a row on Sat and Sun, with Noah throwing fairly well on Saturday, and Zach pitching effectively, although threw a few more pitches in a short amount of time than, I'm sure, he would have liked. The bullpen pitched well in each game. Offense was sputtering and only after some Braves errors on Sunday, did the Mets get some timely hits and score. Some troubling news for the Braves was Kris Medlin injuring his forearm, and since he is a Tommy John recoverer once, this is ominous. I guess more will come in the next few days on his disposition. So Ike and Duda are still not able to play, the first base situation looms ominously until one of these guys can show up and play. DeGrom, in my opinion, is the top Met in the spring, so far.

Yep, syam... pretty good pitching and even better two victories this weekend over the Tigers and the Braves. Noah was a little off with his control and not helped by several defensive miscues but impressed overall the Detroit batters he faced. Threw hard, an easy 95-97mph but did struggle with a less than effective secondary pitch, curve wasn't as good as his first dominant outing. He did end up well showing a better change up in the third but that's where he'll need to make the most improvement before being called up the second half, getting his curveball and change up over consistently. If he does, as hard as he throws with the movement he has it's lights out. Noah allowed two runs on two hits, with three strikeouts and walks.

Also pitching well was Jacob de Grom who while his stats haven't been gaudy has the stuff and makeup to continue developing, pitching two scoreless innings,

Zach Wheeler was very solid today pitching three strong innings, one hit allowed and three strikeouts against the Braves. Mets exploded late sparked by Matt den Dekker's daring baserunning forcing an errant throw on Anthony Seratelli's, (the scrappy Seton Hall alum vying very impressively so far for a backup position) attempted sacrifice bunt in which he scored. Later in the inning Kevin Plawecki knocked in two runs with a double and Den Dekker capped it off by driving in two on a triple..... Mets scoring seven runs in the eighth for the 8-2 win.

Great pieces in the Post about Zach Wheeler and his brothers Jacob and Adam and on DWright's trying to maintain his legs better after the hamstring strain that saw him miss over a month late last season. He's less into being bulky and now much more into keeping his legs and lower body strong to minimize the chances for leg muscle injuries. Now Emphasizes flexibility and mobility, feeling a little quicker this spring. Now into his 30's it's essential he take good care of the core and legs and stay healthy and he's really focused in doing that.

On the Wheeler brothers what a great story... so close and have such great parents to raise such fine sons. Oldest brother Jacob was a great athlete but could no longer play competitive sports after high school because of a serious heart condition. Middle brother Adam was a Yankees prospect who hurt his arm and felt embittered for a long time, and still does to a point, about the way the Yankees gave up on him. Zack despite being the youngest feels like he is playing out not only his dream now with the Mets but also playing for his brothers. Just a really nice story and made me appreciate Zack even more.

It has been a rather disconcerting spring for the Mets in my opinion, thus far. Nobody is hitting worth a lick. We were hoping to see something from d'Arnaud, but he has not shown much, Tejada can't hit his way out of a paper bag, nor catch a ground ball anymore, it seems. The big first base dual has not materialized since neither Duda nor Ike can get on the field to play due to leg injuries. THe pitching has been rather shaky of late and Jon Niese has had two MRI's (thankfully good reports) so far and may miss the opening day assignment. These last two weeks, after tomorrows off day, is when I expect and hope we see some improvement and some of these guys get into season shape both hitting and pitching or we'll be closer to 90 losses instead of 90 wins.

Matt den Dekker has been hitting well as has Kirk Nieuwenhuis. Gee, Syndergaard and Wheeler have thrown very well in their recent outings though results haven't always been as positive due to defensive misplays and small pitching mistakes. Spring training doesn't ordinarily excite me or deflate me in terms of how things are going because fast or slow starts now often don't serve as fair indicators for the upcoming season though you'd like to see more positive things.

I seriously however don't know how far one can go with Ruben Tejada, he's just not showing signs of regaining the range and form defensively or showing the solid contact, patient bat offensively of his first couple of years. Stephen Drew is a good option if the Mets can get him at a reasonable price but they seem to almost want rock bottom, and as long as Scott Boras can help it he won't agree to anything less than two years at 25 mil or so. Which for what he can do in a good season not budget breaking or crippling for the short or long term.

They are looking at Seattle's Nick Franklin who has some power and bat potential but isn't particularly rangy, and may be a better fit at second or third in the future though he can be adequate in the short term. At least do a much better job than Ruben has so far.

Another disappointment is the still unsolved first base battle between Ike Davis and Lucas Duda. Due to Ike's calf injuries and Duda's hamstring problem from early spring training only recently have they started to get at bats at their minor league complex and still haven't run all out. No way is Terry Collins going to be able to give Ike 100 spring training at bats to see if he has what the Mets could use, good lefty power and patience. Now I read Sandy Alderson is still interested in taking calls about Ike's availability in trades but Ike has no real value right now, so it really is a waste of time in that regard.

Glad that Jonathon Niese's elbow scare was not serious but he scares me now after his shoulder questions too earlier. Hope he really did strengthen his rotator cuff over the winter... scary how many pitching injuries, especially torn elbow ligaments we've ben getting this spring training throughout MLB. Lot of baseball people wondering why so many tear injuries, especially since so many teams tend to limit innings and pitches for their young pitching prospects. Shows though the Mets have a deep minor league system of potential high quality starting pitching it's always good to keep getting more and only trade top young pitching talent cautiously, for really good offensive prospects or young major league players. As great as Harvey, Wheeler, Syndegaard, Montero or any of the other young golden arms in the system can be, we can't just rely on constant great health because over time there just seem to be too many pitchers who even with great throwing form and taking every precaution possible still wind up with some level of serious elbow or shoulder injury. We have to develop a solid offense and build a strong defense, too to help maximize opportunities to remain consistently in contention.

I really hope the Mets and Matt Harvey keep things calm.... Mets want to make sure he doesn't rush and there isn't a media circus around which very well may happen if he trains mainly in New York. I understand his frustrations, and he wants to get going and come back late this season if possible but he's got to watch himself here. Just get ready for next season, keep the elbow strong and keep in great shape. If in conjunction with the doctors involved and Matt and the Mets organization, if things look good he can get some innings in late without jeopardizing his recovery, great. There does seem to be a twinge of selfishness, or it can be seen as self centeredness, that Matt is placing his own ego above the team's. I really hope not, and for his sake and everyone's I just hope they can come to as mutually satisfying decision as possible on the course of action for Mat's recovery going into next spring.

Well, spring is here, and Tejada found his stroke at least for a day, with 3 hits and an RBI. Zach Wheeler pitched well, getting into the 6th inning and Black had a good inning in relief. This may have been Farnsworth's last stand, he got knocked around again. Ike went hit less, but at least he got back on the field. Hopefully, he will find his old stoke and start launching HR's like we know he can.

Seeing the Matt Harvey story unfold.
I understand where's he coming from but at the same time, disputes like this shouldn't be in the media if you can avoid it.
Derek Jeter and Davdi Wright can probably give him tips on how to handle the spotlight that is NY, because I think he will be around for quite some time to come.

Definitely agree with that, Ninja. Harvey has to play this better, and the Mets have to work with him too. Just looks like a spoiled brat tantrum when he plays it out in the media like this though it's just more likely his competitiveness, but he should look at the examples of Jeter and his teammate DWright about how to handle pressure, can't get any more professional than those guys in today's game.

Mets exploded for seven runs early against Ricky Nolasco of the Twins in a 9-1 victory. Ike Davis having a big day with a RBI double among three hits including another double and Lucas Duda homering among the stars of the game... keeping the hits coming too was Ruben Tejada who has raised his average this spring to .226 after a sudden torrid streak, though he still isn't guaranteed the starting shortstop job nor has a lock on it even if he gets it. Can he perform offensively and especially defensively like he used to... it's more his regressed defense from last year that truly concerns the Mets, and this spring hasn't cleared up their deep concerns. Mets starter Dillon Gee five plus strong innings, one run on five hits, four strikeouts and his usual outstanding control as he readies to become the Mets Opening Day starter.

Nice day today from the Mets with Ike and D'arnaud hitting HR's to back the pitching of Bartolo Colon. This is more of what I'd hoped to see earlier in the spring, but better late than never. Vic Black had a solid inning of relief as well. Keep it up, as we get closer to Opening Day!

Yep, syam huge offensive day with the two run homers from Ike( his 2nd of the spring) and the first homer of the spring by Travis d'Arnaud. Wilmer Flores is also so intriguing with the bat, just have to fix on a position with him as he smacks thre hits including a three run homer of his own. Chris Young has a great day going three for three and scoring three runs. Mets all over the Marlins yesterday 10-2. Hopefully we can have a nice number of games where our offense makes as much noise as our starting pitching holds our opponents down.

Bartolo Colon was very good... they're stretching the starters more now as he went six and two thirds innings, allowing two runs on five hits with only one walk and striking out three. As you mentioned we had a good inning from Vic Black, the promising young fireballer from the Pittsburgh trade that sent them Marlon Byrd and John Buck.

One week from tomorrow is Opening Day!!!!!!!:D

Good win today against the Nats, 3-1 as Jennry Mejia trying to grab the fifth starter spot did very well allowing one run on five hits with six strikeouts. Andrew Brown had a run scoring single to knot the game at 1 -1 and the big blow came in the Seventh off of Nats reliever Drew Storen on a two run homer by Curtis Granderson. It was a split squad but this was the major game and though Jennry had to come out after five after developing a bunion (a problem he has had from time to time) but should be fine for one more start before the Mets get ready for Opening Day next Monday.

Looks like Dice K has solidified his hold on the #5 spot going over six innings against the Cards allowing one run on three hits, with continued good control... Mets beat the Cards 3-1. Jennry Mejia may not have pitched enough innings last year to commit to putting him right into the rotation and Dice K has been the effective veteran arm this spring they are seeking to hold the fort until the Mets arms like Mejia, Noah Syndegaard and Rafael Montero are ready sometime this season.

Daniel Murphy had two hits including a two run double, other run knocked in on a bloop single by Travis d'Arnaud.

Dillon Gee will be as expected the Opening Day starter next Monday. It appears Matt Harvey and the Mets organization have come to an agreement regarding his rehab... compromising that he largely works on his rehab here in New York but will return to St. Lucie to finish up as he readies to get back on the mound. He apparently will not join the Mets on the road as he had hoped but continue the rehab process here in New York.

Well, the Mets' pitching wasn't so sharp in today's loss to the Nats. Zach Wheeler had some command issues, and the bullpen guys were up and down as well. Familia didn't give up any runs, but walked the bases loaded before getting the third out, which was preceded by a hit and then a double play. Four baserunners and no runs allowed. Parnell gave up a long ball to Zimmerman, but was okay otherwise. DWright hit the ball hard twice with an RBI single, and EY had an RBI triple. Travis d'Arnaud caught a hanging curve from Strasburg and hit it over the left field fence for a Homer (may have had some help from the wind blowing out to left). Ike was hitless in 3 tries, and made a low throw to second on a chance of a force out. More Grapefruit action this week, but the days are dwindling leading to the home opener next Monday!

Yep, syam... something of an off day but rather the club gets the kinks out of their system now than deep into the season. Monday starts everything new again, and hopefully the Mets can use the last few spring training games to come back north and begin the season on a positive note. Would like someone to be more decisive in the first base battle as Ike and Luke have both quieted down some with the bat but it does look currently as if Ike has the best shot at the Opening Day nod at first. Control is one thing Zack Wheeler is really priding himself on improving... becoming much more efficient and able to go farther into games instead of trying to just blow everyone away. It's a learning process and he is showing the maturity needed to deal with it and remedy it so he can be the top flight star we all know he can be.

Dice K seems assured of being the Mets fifth starter at least to open the season.

Great effort by Dillon Gee who's revving on all four cylinders for Opening Day coming up on Monday going six no hit innings, allowing only one walk and had seven strikeouts. Unfortunately every one the Mets threw in from the bullpen was worse than the other as the floodgates opened of off John Lannan, German Gonzalez, Carlos Torres and veteran Jose Valverde who the Mets hoped would serve as a stabilizing veteran in the pen. Mets lose to Houston 9-6. Got two hits and three RBI from catcher Anthony Recker, a two run homer and a triple. Juan Lagares also tripled among three his and drove in a run while Andrew Brown continued his solid reserve pay off the outfield bench with two hits and an RBI.

However the Mets really have to be concerned about their relief... it would be a shame to generally receive strong efforts from the starting staff yet be pulled down into mediocrity by the rise of yet another poison pen.

Not much to add, just a horrendous bullpen performance. Outstanding work from Mr. Gee (not the weather guy).

Mets close the Florida portion of their spring training with a loss to the Nats as a strong pitching effort by the Nats led by Jordan Zimmerman (who also had a hit and drove in a run) 4-0. Corry Mazzoni started for the Mets and left with an injury after pitching less than two innings but he was shaky and has been all spring... one of the few promising minor league starters in the Mets system whose performance this spring has left much to be desired.

Best hitters in the game were Eric Young who smacked three hits and Ike Davis who had two hits. Mets go up to Olympic Stadium in Montreal for a couple of exhibition games against the Toronto Blue Jays, off day Sunday.. then Opening Day on Monday against the Nats at Citi Field with Dillon Gee getting the Opening Day nod.

Another bullpen meltdown for the Mets resulting in a 5-4 loss in Montreal playing the first game of a two game exhibition against the Toronto Blue Jays before Opening Day on Monday at Citifield against the Washington Nationals.(Sunday is an off day for the Mets and the official MLB Opening Day)Starter Jennry Mejia, still trying to make the starting rotation, had yet another strong outing but left in the fifth when hit in the elbow with a line drive. He was then sent for an MRI for a bone bruise in that elbow. Allowed just one run on a solo homer in the fourth but after he left the poison pen struck again. Bobby Parnell gave up the game winning single to the Blue Jays and this was another game which the concern for the Mets for the makeup of the bullpen after another collapse giving up a 4-2 Mets lead late. Chris Young had a two run double, also Daniel Murphy drove in a run with a double and Travis d'Arnaud hit a home run against the team that traded him and rising phenom Noah Syndergaard in the trade for RA Dickey . Not enough as the Mets really have to hit on all cylinders to match GM Sandy Alderson's goal of 90 wins and a struggling bullpen doesn't bode well for comfortable cushions even with the Mets starting staff being so promising. We'll see when the curtain officially rises Monday if the Mets can beat this setback.
