NY Mets 2014

Mets win first game of the year, 4-3... Jennry Mejia gets the win going six innings against the Reds and allowing one run on four hits. Did walk five but struck out four. John Lannan was awful in relief allowing two runs on two hits but Kyle Farnsworth and new acting closer Jose Valverde iced the win with scoreless appearances. Lucas Duda was he offensive hero of the game for the Mets, hitting two homers both with a runner on.

Holy cow, offense from a first baseman. Nice to see Duda's HR's driving in all 4 Mets runs. I did like Ike's approach in Game 1 of the season, he seemed more relaxed and wasn't lunging at every pitch that came in, so will have to see how this works out. Finally some relief from the bullpen. Lannan looks like he will work himself out of a position before too long, great to see Farnsworth and Valverde provide some relief. THe only problem in my mind is let's see if they can do it in back to back games, should they be needed. Hopefully Dillon Gee will return with another stellar performance. Lets go Mets!!

Yep, syam we have to see if the bullpen can hold up in back to back games. Long relief is still a big question mark... also meant to post that Mejia had eight strikeouts, not four.

Wooooooo!! Ike slams the Reds!!
Yay!!!!!!!!! Saw it... with all the stuff Ike has to deal with, especially Duda being the regular first baseman for now, nothing sweeter than getting his teammates who obviously love him so much a great 6-3 win on a walk off grand slam!!!!!!!!!:D

Throw a hanging curve ball to Ike and this is what happens.

In case you missed it here Ike’s grand slam with Gary Cohen calling it like only he can.

I was sorry Kevin Burkhardt was not there to interview Ike KB was busy doing Saturday pre game for FOX sports he will be back with the Mets on Tuesday in Atlanta

Jon Niese taking over the Turner pie duties for Ike Jon will return to the mound today feeling great and raring to go. Collins has been pushing his starters past 100 pitch but I think Jon will be cut off just a little shy of that today maybe mid 90s or so would be my guess.

Oh, so it WAS Jon Niese doing the new pie duties! Wasn't sure but hopefully used real whipped cream like JT did!

They really are pulling for Ike, he's got so much love as a friend and teammate and it shows! He'll be playing today as well, was scheduled anyway to play this afternoon and had nothing to do with his off the bench heroics hitting the game winning grand slam.
NOT happy after only a day or two after Opening Day the Mets just basically said Lucas Duda is our first baseman with Ike coming off the bench.... not like Ike was off to a bad start. He's taken to his role very professionally it's got to hurt basically being told unless Lucas Duda flubs his audition his place is going to be bench/ spot starter and then trade bait. I don't want to root against Duda but Ike's better defensively, Duda would really have to work hard at it to become anything more than adequate. He's a nice guy too, like I said I don't want to root for his failure but really hope there is still a chance Ike survives this all and winds up first baseman here. Just have my doubts it will happen:( Hopefully if Ike winds up part of a trade it's later this season in a package including one of the Mets promising arms for a young bat who could be a big part of the future resurgence of the Mets. Good thing though is it seems the Mets aren't willing to settle for a cheap deal that would get them back less than a big potential contributor so hopefully there's time for him to find enough playing time to justify being a regular first baseman here or elsewhere. Hes a great guy and deserves that chance.

Frustrating 2-1 loss to the Reds so no sweep of the Reds to help send our boys on the road on a good note. Still Jonathon Niese was very encouraging after a spring of health scares in his pitching arm showing good velocity, low nineties fastball and a very effective mix of pitches. Niese went fve and two thirds innings giving up two runs on six hits but had solid control and struck out four. Definitely some needed good news for the Mets. Juan Lagares knocked in Ike Davis for the Mets only run, Ike starting today and doing well with two hits.

Of course this being the Mets we get bad news in that closer Bobby Parnell indeed has decided to undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of this season for a partially torn MCL rather than risk treatments that would only delay surgery if unsuccessful and make it likely he could miss the first half of 2015. Bobby wants to have the best chance to get back at full strength to pitching again and unfortunately like Matt Harvey and Jeremy Hefner it's wait til next year. It's got to be a real downer going through this, alarming so many pitchers are going down with elbow ligament tears. Wishing Bobby a full and speedy recovery, on track for spring training return.

It came as no surprise to me that Bobby Parnell has decided to proceed with Tommy John surgery and will be done for the year; he will have the procedure today in NY. There was talk that Bobby would rest for two weeks and then attempt a throwing program and see where things stood before he would determine the need for surgery. But now we know that Parnell has after just a couple of days to think about it decided to have the surgery without first attempting the rehab. Thing is Bobby spoke to a lot of other pitchers his family including his wife and thinking how even if he felt better after rests he did not want to wait and go ahead a start pitching only to wait until the other shoe dropped and he would have to leave a few months into 2014 plus he understands how he might have that on his mind and it could affect how he pitched this year worrying about what might happen. So better to just have it done and be over with it and be back in 2015 I applaud that decision and believe it is the right one to make. I n case you forgot Parnell was diagnosed with a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right elbow, the tear was in a thick part of the ligament. Jose Valverde already has stepped into the closer's role.
I feel really bad for Bobby cause he worked so hard to finally have his dream of getting a closer’s job. The kid missed the final two months of last season with a herniated disk in his neck, which ultimately required surgery. Here is the thing; it is very upsetting to think about it this is becoming a problem for baseball I mean when all of a sudden over and over again some player is having surgery. I mean WTF?

As for Valverde, he does have a real track record of success as a closer but that was then and this is now I have concerns that he can handle it. Add to that the rest of the bullpen which even thou they handled the last two games ok it is still for me a bigger issue, I was at least feeling good about the bullpen pitching eight innings in three games against the Reds and allowing only two runs a heck of a lot better than 12 runs in nine innings during the previous three games against the Nationals.
But it’s the Mets so I will be holding my breath once again this year when closer leaves early and the pen takes the ball. I know that Alderson said that he is more inclined to wait and see how things shake out in the big-league bullpen before making any additional roster moves. Our AAA starting pitchers will get time working out of the bullpen in April to see how they may handle a possible role in Flushing later this season. Also it will help limit their workload, allowing for more innings later in the season.
As to Jenrry Mejia as long as he is pitching well in the starting rotation, he will not be moved to the bullpen, even thou Matsuzaka was sent to AAA. So yes for now at least the bullpen is likely to be Valverde, Kyle Farnsworth, Gonzalez Germen, Jeurys Familia, Carlos Torres, Scott Rice and John Lannan. How will they do? Well there Mets and that means that there will be days they’re awful, and days they’re good. I have my worries they’ll ever be dominant until the younger pitchers are considered for promotions from Triple-A. Forget what Alderson said about that may not happen cause it has too and he knows it, kids like Rafael Montero can be called up in late April and still have a full year of a service time which means that if the bosses want to bring him to the big-league bullpen, assuming everyone in the rotation is doing well and healthy Montero could be added to the big-league team sooner than later.

So as agreed to by the Mets and Matt Harvey he did not travel with the team to Atlanta and will not be going on the road trip out west; he is in Florida to continue rehabbing from Tommy John. This was the plan they all agreed to Matt will only be with the team when they are in NY

Tonight we start a 3 day series with the Braves in Atlanta so ya know lots of chanting and tomahawk’s, oh those Braves fans they are so amusing

We get another look at Colon tonight question of course will be can he keep his pitches down in the zone.

Yup Saucy for the most part whipped cream is the way most of the pies are made although Pagan would often substitute shaving cream, Turner did that as well once when the kitchen was out of whipped cream but shaving cream burns the eyes so it is not generally used. Ike did confirm that this time it was indeed tasty whipped cream.

The Atlanta "House of Horrors" has not been kind to the Mets over the years, so hoping for a good showing this trip. I think we swept a series here awhile back, but usually strange things happen to the Mets here, blown ball games, I thing Billy Wagner gave up a 4 run lead here, some injuries, etc. Sorry Parnell needs the surgery, but sooner is better than later, it was probably going to happen at some point. Need a good outing from Bartolo Colon tonite to get things in order. The bullpen, oh well, just have to wait and see. Lets go Mets!!

Thanks sonny, yeah it's far more preferable to use real whipped cream. You want to really enjoy a sweet moment, and those are the only times the pie thing is done.... to celebrate great wins by rewarding the hero of the game! Hope we get some more great moments like that throughout the year!:D

sonny, you definitely are spot on about the relief.... right now it's pretty hit or miss and eventually they'll have to bring in some of our promising future starters like Montero for bullpen roles. Valverde may be able to handle the closer spot, he's a veteran with a solid career to his record but the bullpen issues probably won't be resolved til young guys are called up to help out later in the season. Can Valverde hold up that long is a big question, though.... as sonny and I mentioned he has the track record but that was then, this is now. Can he hold up?

Well syam, good to see our boys get of to a good start in Atlanta blanking the Braves 4-0. Winter free agent signee Bartolo Colon was outstanding going seven innings allowing no runs on seven hits and the bullpen at least for today effectively closing the door. Great to see Travis d'Arnaud and Ruben Tejada as offensive heroes of the game after slow starts both getting two hits, Travis scoring one run and Ruben driving in two and scoring two. Gonna go with the usual rally chant and also add " Let's go, Mets!"

Not much to add to Sausy's "Happy Recap", as Bob Murphy used to say. Colon was super, Farnsworth's untouched, and Valverde with his usual tightrope act, including his own error on what should have been a game ending comebacker double play. Nice offense from the bottom of the order, just need to get DWright and Granderson into the swing of things, which will happen soon.

Not such a happy recap today... Zack Wheeler wasn't awful. and didn't have any control issues but he was off a bit and gave up four runs in six innings. Relief though held up and Mets tried furiously in the ninth to come back with Juan Lagares driving in two runs and Travis d'Arnaud driving in another with singles but too little, too late. David Wright also had two hits and scored a run in the ninth inning rally in Atlanta. Hate when you come back but can't quite get it done, but no quit in our boys at least. Final in Atlanta, 4-3 victory for the Braves.

Mets take two out of three in Atlanta before going West for three games against the Los Angeles Angels this weekend and three against the Arizona Diamondbacks. They win a thrilling 6-4 effort that saw a lot of steals and clutch hitting as Eric Young scored four runs and had three hits, scoring three runs with three stolen bases. Daniel Murphy also had a big game with a couple of runs scored and three hits, three RBI stealing his first base of the year. The other runs were driven in on singles by David Wright and Juan Lagares.

The big thing for the Mets better play recently has been a much stronger and dominant bullpen effort. Starter Jennry Mejia was very shaky in five innings giving up four runs and was hit around some... he didn't break though and Carlos Torres with two scoreless innings and Kyle Farnsworth setting up brilliantly again in the eighth and closer by default Jose Valverde easily getting through the ninth to seal the win. Mets were able to rally late and make it stick and with so many problems early on has been a positive and surprising development. No resting on winning this series, our boys go in Los Angeles tomorrow night so we'll offer a hearty " Let's go, Mets!"

I wanted to write a little something about Zack Wheeler who had some problems later in the game on Wednesday now I know that you have noticed how his velocity on his fastball continues to drop after a few innings Zack is trying to make the ball sink which is not what we want from him what we want is for him to throw 97 but he is a tough kid to coach always was just does not always like to hear what he does not want to hear what may actually be good for him. I first noticed that way back when I first met him before he came to the bigs, but give the kid a chance it’s only been two starts and let’s not forget also that this is his first full year in the majors also think sometimes his velocity is the result of Zack looking to improve his control and sacrificing some of his velocity to get that we know for sure he does have some control issues. He just needs to get the confidence to use that velocity and believe that the ball is gonna go over the plate And oh my yes if he looks to get a bit rattled you are right about that cause he does he is not Harvey who basically looks at batters and says go ahead show me what ya got.

It was a big thrill for all of us Murphy lovers to see him break out big time last night. Murph I can tell you has been working hard in the cage to improve his at bats wanting to get more efficient to the ball to get some pitches to hit that he has been missing and stop chasing some pitches out of the zone, he knows he has been a little bit late to often and needs to get on time. He desperately wants more consistent at bats something he surly did last night. But it wasn’t just Murph last night we saw finally some of the guys not taking pitches down the middle that are very hittable letting a good pitch in the at bat go and then swing at a tough breaking pitch, that needed to stop. And OMG Granderson I mean can you believe he is fast becoming Jason Bay all over again I worried that would happen and son of a bitch if it hasn’t Please Yankees take him back ya don’t even have to give us anything for him just make him go away. We have far better outfielders in den Decker or even Nieuwenhuis down in AAA that could do a much better job for us.

So tonight we start a series in LA; the boys will be a little tired after a 5 and half hour plane ride that got them into Cali early this morning followed by a long bus ride to the hotel putting them to bed and almost 4am. When are they gonna stop doing that MLB has to stop sending baseball teams on long road trips following a night game should have played yesterday in the day time I mean we want our guys to be fresh and not tired for the next game right? Well you would think so. Murphy had the right ideas bought himself a new comfy pillow for the trip and planned on zonking out for most of the trip. He had a funny exchange with Burkhardt which I am not sure made it air when KB asked Murph if he would share the pillow, Daniel stared and Kevin and said with his best are you kiddin me look said “with another human being? …NO, so cute cracked Kevin up. Watch

I suppose the Duda/Davis (and please don’t call it a completion) mess these guys are very good friends and hate when people call it a completion between them for the first base job which it is not at all they support one another and just want to contribute all they can; calling it a completion just bugs both of em so press folks please stop. To make it more umm I hate to use the word interesting Josh Satin will probably start against the lefty maybe since we are playing an American league team either Ike or Lucas will be the DH. I say leave Josh out of this and let both Duda and Davis play in the lineup together and the same time for a couple of games, that way maybe we can finally get what Ike has wanted all along with more offense and maybe get a better look at what they have going on. So, then the nuts behind the bolts in the front office can finally make a decision on what they’re doing at first base. I am so sick of hearing day after day about Lucas and Ike and who will end up with that job; STOP ALREADY… please. I will tell you that Ike is not lovin being on the bench but is a good soldier and will do what he can to help his team pus of course the Mets for whatever reason seen to prefer Duda for the job and yeah maybe Ike will continue to get playing time to possibly build up his stock to make him tradable. I will say this Ike is the better first baseman you have read me say that over and over again and what could end up happing if the Mets insist on keeping Duda and trade Davis he will go to another team and become the outstanding ball payer I know he can be and show the Mets what a mistake they made while Duda fades away into the dust. Oh and don’t get me wrong I like Duda a lot he is great kid and can certainly get the job done at the plate but his defensive skills pale in comparison to Ike’s, I recall Alderson saying that it was all about offense over defense in decisions about ball players.

Also looking forward tonight to seeing my ole buddy Collin Cowgill who by the way is another player who could easily replace Granderson. Did I mention I want rid of Granderson?:p

Nice series by the Mets in Atlanta, just one ninth inning hit away from a sweep of he Braves. The bullpen has done a nice job in recent outings, let's hope they can keep it up. The thing about Zach Wheeler that is of small concern to me right now is that by 5 innings his pitch count is already in the 90's and in today's baseball that usually means your night is over. (Can you say Mike Pelfrey). We need him to go longer than that. It's not so much a control issue as command I guess. Hopefully he will gain experience and correct whatever the issue is. I'm not worried about Granderson at all, he will come around and hit about 30 HR's and probably knock in 80 or so runs, and strike out about 150 times. Glad to see d'Arnaud get a few hits. Let's go Mets!!

Great victory last night 7-6 in 13 after Friday night's frustrating extra innings loss. Jon Niese pitches well going seven plus innings allowing three runs on five hits, good control and had five K's. Jose Valverde had his first big flop of the year blowing a 6-3 lead in the ninth and giving up a three run, game tying homer. Anthony Recker though came up big with a solo homer in the 13th and the Mets emerged with the victory. Great job from the lower part of the lineup carrying things offensively today, highlighted by Recker also driving in two runs earlier on a single, an RBI by Juan Lagares and three hits and two RBI by Omar Quintaniila and finally a couple of hits and solo home run by Lucas Duda.

Other than the Valverde breakdown the bullpen was very tough and held up. It is a concern though if it's just a fluke off night or is Valverde going to be able to show the consistency he must have now that the Mets don't have Parnell the rest of the year? Rubber game in Los Angeles today later this afternoon, so as syam says "Let's go, Mets!"

Ugh. 14-2. Colon awful... gave up four homers including back to back to back in the first, and all downhill from there. Mets shellshocked, no comeback. Less said about this game the better as Mets lose two of three in Los Angeles and now off to Arizona for a three game series against the Diamondbacks.

Long series with the two extra inning games. With a couple of exceptions the pitching was okay. As Saucy mentioned Valverdes and Colon's meltdowns were the major issues. Lawn nan had one good and one bad outing. Will need to get some lengthened performance from the starters in Az. Let's go Mets!!

Mets win in a great game in Arizona for Zack Wheeler to get on track, 7-3... final line wasn't amazing but in six and a third innings gave up three runs on six hits with three walks and strikeouts but he was much more in command then the stats suggest. Was off a bit early but really came on as the game went. Bobby O, sonny's new pal after a lot of years of giving sonny agita;) was thrilled with how Zack was really adjusting. His fastball remained constant 93-95(even threw one 96 late) but his command of his curveball, slider and off pitches in general really got Bobby O pumped and raving about the performance. Even he noted when Zack was off it was usually just a bit. Not wild wide, high, low or in as he would have sometimes gone in the past. Zack was just disappointed he couldn't finish the seventh but had walked his last batter and pitch count was getting up but he handled everything with grace and maturity.

A little marred though when the Mets lost Curis Granderson in the sixth after he was pretty banged up on his left side after making a catch and in the seventh Juan Lagares may have strained his hamstring and had to be removed. Both will be examined to determine the seriousness of their injuries and hope neither is out for an extended period. Andrew Brown can get some time if needed or the Mets could call up Matt den Dekker or Kirk Nieuwenhuis for insurance if need be.

Lucas Duda was great knocking in a run and going 4 for 5 with a double. Eric Young continues to shine with two hits, a stolen base and scoring two runs as Daniel Murphy with a couple of hits, runs scored and an RBI. David Wright had two hits and drove in two runs, and Curtis Granderson also drove in run. Murph made two outstanding plays in the field to help Carlos Torres who had come in for Wheeler. Torres finished the game allowing one run in two and two thirds innings and helping conserve therest of the already well worn bullpen, getting the save. Torres does have that ability if needed to spot start so he's a natural if they need a longer effort in relief like they did tonight.

Game 2 against the Diamondbacks tomorrow night so let's keep it up... Let's go, Mets!
