God bless President Obama!

He could easily sign an executive order suspending DADT, much like they did to integrate the troops.

Constitutionally that would be iffy -- he'd have to do it in a way that didn't mention or even single out DADT, because the president can't issue executive orders which contradict federal law.

Assertive, but nebulous.

Very much so.
It's getting old.

i agree i need to see it to believe it im kinda getting tired of Obama promising all these great things but nothing happening.

Change in American the only thing i see changing is my boxers

^ Did you even watch the speech? It was sincere.

Sincerity means nothing if it isn't backed by action. His comments and speeches on DADT during the campaign were all sincere; there is no doubt in my mind that he wants to end DADT and wants gays to be free and open about their sexuality while in the military.

But unless he actually does it, its just more pretty words and none of the difficulty that comes with carrying them out.

CHANGE, for better or worse, takes TIME! Especially in D.C.! ](*,)

The momentum is building. I think, and feel, that it's on the right track. Mountains are not moved over night. Things like this, and all the other things, must be set up in order to accomplish them.

I say, "Reserve your judgments until you see what actually happens in the next six months, or so."

Are we impatient for Action? Yes! But, try to be patient, extend our short attention span, and let "The Man" DO his job! He's headed in the right directions. Give him a chance to drive the car to get us there! ..|

(And, No! We aren't quite there, yet! :slap: )

Keep smilin'!!(*8*)
Chaz ;)

Not really, since it is a law and not an administrative policy.

Besides, even if that could somehow be accepted, that wouldn't be a permanent solution. The next Republican president could just reverse it.

A change in the law is needed.

As I said in another thread, if hate crimes and ENDA can pass (which both look favorable) that will be more progress than we have made in many years.

We finally have a president who isn't a bigot, but there are plenty of them in Congress, so it's not just like he can flip a switch on any of this.

I admit, I went to sleep early, so I didn't hear the speech.

But I know he wants to end it, and now that he is saying up front he wants it gone, I am optomistic. But as people in this thread have said, more pretty words.

I'll wait and see what happens. He could easily use DADT or some other thing to take heat off the health care bill and hopefully bull rush that through. But that is even more optimistic.

Some of you are just too stupid for words. You think a president can just snap his fingers and do anything he wants. Making laws, particularly ones that are highly controversial, takes time in DC. Clinton learned that by trying to move to fast on this issue, he actually ended up going backwards. Obama is smarter and trying to do it in a way that will ultimately succeed. Some of you think everything bad in this country should've automatically changed on Jan 20 at noon. Such ignorance! I'm really ashamed at how stupidly the gay community has been acting in 2009.

I have dinner the other night with a man with strong ties to the defense department (he would've been undersecretary of defense in a Hillary administration) that Obama's working strongly behind the scenes with the DoD on the best way to reverse DADT, both politically and within the culture of the military. This man said it WILL happen before the midterm elections.

If what you say is true, then YAY I don't have to go back into the closet for too long while in the service.

But yeah, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs talked about how Obama has been working with DoD and his generals on DADT. Getting people prepared. He said it on This Week or something a while ago.

When it happens I will celebrate,But I,m not going to hold my breath.
However, Now that he has promised to end DADT, He has to do it-Or else.

That's a reason I can see for this taking time.

Sounds kinda like Obama the community organizer is trying to organize the military community to prepare it for the event. :p

in some ways...im kinda angry too...but me being the cynic i am....i wonder if people are angry over the fact that he made these promises....or if they are mad because with him.....there is a better chance for getting the things we want (repeal of dadt, doma repealed, etc)...so if it doesnt happen with obama...it may not happen for a while (at the federal level that is)
