The Republicons are already hammering on Obama over this decision. What a surprise!

My spin: If Obama had accepted the Keystone Oil pipeline, the Republicons would have been hammering anyway. Obama figured this and decided to base his decision on what may be best for the environment, if not the country at large.

Oh, The Humanity! I just heard the Boner whining that there would have been 20,000 shovel-ready jobs that won't happen. The shovel-ready jobs already have been filled. The can be found in the U.S. Capitol building.

Review: every job-creating bill that was approved by the House under Speaker Pelosi was filibustered by McChinless. Nice try Republicons! By the way, where ARE those fucking jobs that we were promised in Nov. 2010?

The sad thing is that the line will now head west to the Candian coast and the original purchaser of the oil (China) will get it anyway.

We will get no cut of the money nor a cut of oil.

Great fucking decision.

Congratulations China!!!!

You have a friend in President Obama.

Congratulations President Obama for saving the Ogallala Aquifer from being destroyed by greedy fast-profit corporate fat cats.

Our water supply is being threatened by those seeking fast cash, but President Obama is refusing to let them destroy the country. Republican politicians are desperately trying to turn the USA into a shit hole so their owners can pad their bank accounts.

Thank you President Obama!!! You have millions of grateful friends in the USA! :=D:

More better. :D

It is all political grandstanding.

The pipeline isn't dead. It will be back.

Although truth be known....I don't understand why the oil companies just don't build the refinery in Alberta, Canuckistan instead of us just shipping the dirty oil from the oil sands down to the gulf.

You can read about the opposition here:

http://www.350.org/

The big oil companies are the ones pushing the pipeline so that's why their purchased republican politicians are for this pipeline. They're doing their master's (Big Oil) bidding.

Just watch..... this summer the oil companies will raise gasoline prices and give all kinds of excuses (regulations, shortages, etc) and blame it all on Obama to try and get him out of office. Their profits will soar. They'll hope Americans will blame Obama for the high prices too.

Got to get rid of those goddamn lobbyists.

The knock on Barack Obama from many quarters has been that he's too conciliatory. But here, in the face of a naked political threat from Big Oil to exact 'huge political consequences,' he's stood up strong. This is a victory for Americans who testified in record numbers, and who demanded that science get the hearing usually reserved for big money.

Read the comments here. It will inform you about the hazards of tar sands oil.

Sell your car Bob -- buy a donkey.

I thought Obama was for jobs.

America needs a safe supply of oil and Canada has it

Obama and the Democrats blew it this time

There were jobs to be had and a safe, secure source of oil from America's best friend, Canada

I guess importing oil (via freighter) from the Middle East is considered a better alternative. After all, these countries have a better track record on respecting the environment and human rights  and, American forces are required to defend the same waters the oil must travel

Canada does not have to wait for those in Washington to get their thumbs out of their collective asses because China and Asia want our oil

This is a sad day for The United States of America

I agree with CowboyBob and crisrobin and any others that believe Obama did the right thing.
I got this in my email about which states are the most polluted.
You can check your state and city as to where the polluters are. I've attached a jpg of my city. The rectangle shows where the refineries are located. The ship channel and I37 and north of that, is about 10 miles of refineries. One practically in downtown Corpus. The other one is at the NW end in the ship channel.
i got the impression today that the PL would go to Louisiana.
Obama negated the PL because the GOP insisted a 6 month evaluation be made. That is not enough time for a real evaluation. The 6 month eval will come up next and watch the GOP vote against it. click on this link and select your state. A Gloogle map will come up.
http://ghgdata.epa.gov/ghgp/main.do

There is an Alternet link here that explains the options of the PL.

ABC news is reporting the administration is not against the pipeline--the Republican gov. of Nebraska doesn't want the pipe going thru a prime area of the state--if there was a leak it could fuck up the water table,etc.---Obama wants to redesign the pipe so it doesn't pass thru certain areas. He wanted to take a year to do this but Rep wanted a vote now.

The route was redesigned to appease Nebraska

Pipeline?

How about we all just convert to electric/solar vehicles and use this as impetus to get off oil?

Now, if only those pesky automobile manufacturers would reasonably price this technology.

So where do we buy this vehicles? SyFy channel?

Until there is a viable choice -- we are stuck with oil. At least let's buy it from our friends instead of our enemies or prospective enemies.

Agreed, we'd all like to be driving zero emission vehicles but we're not there yet

Part of the pipeline is already in existence and from the map it goes right over my head! Isn't it really just postponed for more study? Oil pipelines don't have the best safety record and the oil from these oil sands is particularly dirty.

For the republicans saying it will create jobs, would you be willing to put some guarantee's in that and include a 'No Outsourcing' provision on all phases of construction and operation of the pipeline?

^^Or the glass roads I idea we talked about recently... ..|

Btw M4P -- since you live up there by the tar sands -- wasn't this pipeline part of their ORIGINAL concept BEFORE they started the project??? And if so -- why is it so critical NOW vs. several years ago???

Just curious...

My brother has actually been up there on multiple occasions -- apparently, they've created a NICE city to live and work...

:):):)

I live about 500 miles south of the oil sands (as we prefer to call them). This is a new pipeline that has been in the works for some time now. The route was recently changed to satisfy justified environmental concerns from Nebraska

Someone mentioned pipelines being leaky but I have to disagree. They are far more safer than oil tankers

There's a market for our oil. Either we sell it to our best friends or we sell it to China & Asia. Our federal government is already working on plan B because the country can't have all its eggs in one basket
