Really an astonishing thing to witness. The President does Question Time with the Republicans and does extraordinarily.

This is the kind of dialogue we need to have more of.

And can people PLEASE stop with this "Obama needs a teleprompter" trope...the man is handles himself just time on the fly.

This had to be one of his most impressive performances. The Republicans had thinly disguised talking points and buzzwords and Obama displayed a depth of knowledge and understanding that was amazing. Too bad he wasn't doing something like this last August.

I watched it on C-Span and was very impressed with Obama. Some of the questions had veiled jabs in them but he used humor to deflect them and responded with very thoughtful responses. I hope this can be the beginning of some meaningful dialogue between both parties... And did you hear Obama say pointedly that he IS NOT an idealogue?? He's more of a pragamist... hopefully soon some Republicans (and Democrats alike) will move in that direction as well.

I was impressed. Obama had his fair share of buzzwords and thinly disguised talking points also -- so why not just overlook both and move on.

What was also impressing is that I he had to rely on using his brain and not a teleprompter. A lot of uh's -- but he did well. Recovery from an addiction will take a while.

We do need more of these open meetings. Looking at this by saying he was entering the enemy camp is not acceptable just like it wasn't acceptable for that to be said when he spoke at West Point last year. We are all Americans.

I agree that we need more. I do still think it's a myth that he was ever addicted to the teleprompter...he's always handled interviews fine, and townhalls fine. This was no different. Obama is a very smart man, like him or not. He knew details of the Republican plans on Health Care that I don't think they expected him to know. He's clearly a very canny and thoughtful politician and President. Moreso than his opponents and the media give him credit for.

Um... how about "no?"

You know what? You can't do that "it was a wash" bullshit. Obama pwned that group fo numbskulls so bad, Fox News cut out 20 minutes early. That blood bath was too much for them to take.

GOP people coming up with bullshit "facts" like "this is worse than it was with Dubya (!?)" and Obama snapping back "that's not true and you know it."

And they do know it.

They came armed with talking points, lies and he countered them with facts and beat them over the head for their childish behaviour.

I know that you'd like to just move on and forget this happened but it did and we have video. He didn't need no teleprompter to slamdunk smackdown those losers.

And you know it.

^Quite right. The Republicans had nothing but talking points, same crap they tell the tea baggers, and Obama countered them very well with facts and a command of the subject.

It's pretty pathetic that the opposition has to resort to criticizing a President for using a telepromter, maybe the folks out in Bumfuck buy that stuff, but not anyone else.

Like I've said... if they had anything real to attack him with, they wouldn't be harping about..

1. He uses a teleprompter

2. His name rhymes with Osama

3. His middle name is Hussein

4. He hasn't shown his birth certificate (which he has)

5. He likes dijon mustard

6. He's a socialist and a communist (which are polar opposites)

CNN is going to replay it in it's entirety Sat evening - 6PM (et) I think.
I look forward to seeing it. I missed it.

You're wrong -- I'm calling you out. I flipped back between Fox, MSNBC, CNN -- Fox stayed and covered the program without always cutting in and allowing the anchors comment time.

Fox did cut away from the last 20 minutes of the discussion to allow one of its anchors, Trace Gallagher, to comment, so Jasun was correct.

Apparently I need at least 25 posts to post a URL, so please google it for yourself. At least three relevant links came up when I did a search on the subject.

I'm not the biggest Obama fan, but I have to admit, this was a great move on his part. I for one would have been terrified one of them would pull out a shotgun and blow my head off.

President Obama did a great job because he's smart as Hell & the Greatest Politician of our time.

The Republicans will still vote "NO" to every bill he supports...They will stand together until the bitter end...The Dems in congress will continue to fight each other, show no signs of Unity and lose seats in November...

You've now been pwned twice in the same thread.

You should give up arguing the wrong side of politics and take up macrame.

A few comments.

1. It was a very good political performance.

2. Obama was less than truthful throughout, continuing his administration's less than truthful lines. Something you pretend is true doesn't become true because you repeat it boldly. There are tons of examples like the stimulus bill did have earmarks, and it would have been very easy to be transparent about the health care reform process (nobody forced Obama to make backroom deals with PhRMA, etc) and broadcast debate and negotiations on CSPAN, and it's not true that Obama has kept his pledge about lobbyists. The list is long and none of it's new.

3. If what Obama and his supporters really want to accomplish is getting Republicans to work with Democrats then Obama's performance and his supporter's high-fiving over his big win make this a failure. If you want a group like the Republicans today to work with you, and you're in power, you use reconcilation not smackdown. Cheering on Obama's big win as if Government is a sporting event between Team Democrats and Team Republicans, of an event where ObamaCo asked if he could attend a Republican Retreat after the Dem loss in MA, is not the way to get Republicans to work with him. It was a way to get his supporters and the media to cheer for him as if this were a campaign and he wanted to win against Republicans in an election.

So if ObamaNation wanted to score points and humiliate the opposition and set up election year campaigns for Us Versus Them, then A+.

But if Obama wanted to build a bridge to make Washington work better and pass good legislation, then Epic Fail.

It was a fine reminder of who Obama is and what he does, and of why his first year has been such a failure, and why his next three years will be at least as bad. He says he wants one thing, to make himself look virtuous and elicit cheers, and his actions are about something else entirely.

Are you sure it wasn’t the other way around?

That's interesting.

Maybe I misheard the report. Might have misinterpreted something like this, which is in one of the links you provided: "Republicans immediately agreed to the request, but they may be regretting it now," which was about Obama's request to videotape the performance and have reporters present.

But you do understand that, except for how sophisticated the political strategy was, it has no bearing on my point, right? The point is about what Obama says he wants to achieve and what his actions, his performance, show he wants to achieve.

[President Obama] says he wants one thing … and his actions are about something else entirely.

I’m not sure if conventional correlations will hold true, but presume that time will tell.

It is interesting. ;)
