Obama's Speech (07/25/11)

Raising revenue does not mean raising taxes. The getting rid of loopholes and corporate giveaways is just one of them, and the people will demand it. The GOP has overplayed their hand. The phone lines are ringing off the hook over at the house, calls from enraged americans who are demanding that the rich and the corporations pay their fair share.

IF they do not give this to the public, the public will put people in office that will do this in ONE year, just as the republicans are getting kicked out on their cans in wisconsin.

There may be one living republican more incompetent that Bush jr, and he is running the house of representatives.

They honestly don't have a clue over there as to how to legislate.

Blessedly, its a burden they wont have to bear for much longer.

If you're talking about the $400 million of "revenue" in ten years regarding the removal of the depreciation clause in corporate jets -- that's going to make a big impact. LOL Barry JELL-O'bama can't give another example for fear he'll piss someone off. Warren Buffet is already pissed about the corporate jet thing.

There are many loopholes that need to be removed. I'm just not sure how many dem's and repub's will actually support that.

I'm coming to the conclusion that we need to freeze spending -- meaning no funny accounting -- a true freeze for about 5 years on everything.

there are hundreds of these 400 million dollar holes Jack, and they cater to every little dirty corner of corporate america, that is taking haand over fist profits without hiring ONE SOUL.

As for who would support it? why doesn't boehner let that get to the house floor for a vote. I bet it would pass in an instant. But we all know he would never do that. It may make the country run better, and cant have that!! gotta get Obama out of office.

and just so you know? a tax cut is considered an expense. You can see that in the fact that half of the costs of Obama's stimulus package was taxes, yet the entire thing was considered an expense.

If it is a law that reduces the income of the treasury, it IS an expense. This level of thinking seems to be above the tea party loons, but I suspect you are a smart guy that knows what a tax cut is.

The spending spree, and spending is clearly the problem, needs to be stopped. Obama wants to borrow and spend $2,500,000,000,000 over the next 18 month period. That will mean every American family will owe an additional $20,000 in debt.

Money that could have been used to send kids to college. Money that could have been used to buy a new car and actually do some good for the economy. But you guys on the left want to bankrupt this country. Let me introduce you to a new concept. It's called austerity. The EU is coming to grips with their situation and adopting austere budgets. It's time we do the same.

Being a libertarian means the government does what the Constitution allows for and nothing more. If we did that alone, government would be only 1/3 of it's current bloated size. That means we wouldn't be paying for the other 2/3 would we? We've got far too much government that's the issue. That's always been my position.

Obama doesn't really "want to" -- but he's grown up enough to face reality: changing things overnight will bring chaos.

He'd love to stop spending in Iraq and Afghanistan, but is aware that creating sudden power vacuums are more often than not a Very Bad Thing. Personally, I think he's moving too slowly in Iraq, especially when the government there keeps whining about how our military are behaving. Next time their government complains about the behavior or members of a unit, I'd smile and say, "Okay, we'll bring that whole brigade home and they won't bother you any more". And I'd be pulling troops home from all over the world.

But the House Republicans won't let him be realistic. What he'd like is to throw out the upper Bush tax cut, and not have to borrow so much. Again I think he's being a wimp; I'd go with that Congresswoman who wants a couple more brackets on top the structure, with serious rates.

Yes, we have far too much government -- but just as a person weighting in at 390 pounds isn't going to drop two hundred of it overnight, neither can we trim it overnight.

Most Americans don't understand that raising revenue means raising taxes.

Did anyone say that spending on defense was off the table?

Reagan raised revenue without raising taxes.

Ryan said defense should increase -- that's sort of off the table.
I'd slash it by 5% for the next year, and 1.5% per year for the next ten years.

position.

It's not a new concept at all. In fact what you are proposing is exactly what created the depth and length of the Great Depression. Take a look at those austere countries like Ireland, Greece, Portugal, et al... How's that working out for them? Oh, that's right... It ain't. They've been in full blown recession for 3 years now.

The time for austerity was under Bush. Once he sailed the country over a cliff and brought the economy to it's knees, locked the USA into this deficit. Sure the deficit needs to be addressed, but not until the economy bounces back. In fact the USA should be cutting the war expenditures, and spend money on creating incentives for job growth as well as massive investments in infrastructure.

Sorry Jacko, but you very much were in favor of the wars and thus part of they very problem that has run up the deficit. You can't ditch your responsibility for that by not wanting to pay for it.

There are too many games being played by the politicians.

Obama wants enough money to last through his next coronation.

The Republicans want a shorter period to mainly embarrass Obama and the Democrats before the 2012 election.

WTF cares about America. It appears no one.

Go into default, lower the credit rating by these greedy credit rating companies.

Let people and companies experience some of the pain felt by the unemployed the last several years.

Bullshit! This is utter bullshit! Both sides are not being "stuck". It is only the Republicans that have sailed off the edge. Stop blaming Democrats for this mess, when it is a pox on your house.

Fair Use Excerpt said:
Some of us have long complained about the cult of “balance,” the insistence on portraying both parties as equally wrong and equally at fault on any issue, never mind the facts. I joked long ago that if one party declared that the earth was flat, the headlines would read “Views Differ on Shape of Planet.”
