* * * * CHAPTER SIX * * * *

“What the hell?!” Dominick’s mother shouted at the computer.

“Uh... Do I want to know?” Dominick asked while mentally taking inventory of a few things she could be upset about.

“Your phone plan comes with five THOUSAND text messages! How did you manage to jump from fifteen hundred to eight thousand in one month?!” She complained.

“Okay, I’m not really sure where the anger is stemming from here. I’ve always paid my part of the phone bill, so there’s no reason to raise your voice. I’ll take care of it!” Dominick reasoned. It had been about a month since he and Derek began chatting on Facebook and they had since exchanged phone numbers. There were very few moments in the day when Dominick and Derek weren’t texting or on the phone with each other. And that was only because they were together in person during those few moments.

“Who could you possibly be texting that much?” she prodded.

“Does it matter? I said I’d take care of it! Jesus!” At this point Dominick was more than irritated. The only reason they shared a phone bill in the first place was so his mother could benefit from his corporate discount. Who did she think she was to be interrogating him about his own phone bill?

“Sorry, Dom. I guess that just caught me off guard when I saw the dollar amount.” She finally laughed after a short period of silent tension.

“I’m sorry, too. I didn’t mean to raise my voice at you, Mom.” Dominick apologized. “But on that note, I have lunch plans with Alyssa. I’ll see ya later!”

Before the waiter could even ask for drink orders, Alyssa began her “inconspicuous” investigation. “So… Is he gay now?” she asked innocently.

“What? Who??” Dominick responded in shock. He knew exactly who she was referring to, but needed a second to recover from the jolting bluntness of her interrogation.

“Derek! Duh!” She rolled her eyes. “You hardly ever hang out with the group anymore! You’re always with him! And even when you are with us, you’re texting him!” she began to explain.

“Yeah, my mom was a little shocked about my text messages on this month’s bill.” Dominick laughed. He was juggling the idea in his head. To be honest, he was equally confused. But if there was any chance that Derek was not 100% straight, Dominick knew it wasn’t his place to make the announcement.

“See? So spill!” Alyssa insisted. Her eyebrows were raised so high they almost met her dark brown hair, which was pulled into a quick ponytail.

“Of course Derek isn’t gay. He just broke up with his girlfriend!” Dominick attempted to sound convinced.

“Hmm. I guess so. It’s just so weird! You guys are like best friends all the sudden. And Phil said he walked into Derek’s room one night at 3:00am and you guys were in bed together!”

“Okay, first of all, we weren’t ‘in bed together’. We were just in the same bed asleep. There’s a difference.” Dominick defended.

“Okay, but guy friends don’t typically share a bed when there are five couches in the house. Plus, he slept in only his boxers!” Alyssa continued to argue.

“Good Lord! Did Phil run a column in the Enquirer or something?? This is ridiculous!” Dominick said as his phone buzzed. There was a pause in the conversation as he read Derek’s text and replied.

“Derek, right? Everyone can tell when you guys are texting because you get this cheesy excited look on your face.”

Dominick fought another cheesy smile and started to blush. The events of the last month excited him and confused him. It was in his nature to tell his friends everything and seek their feedback, but he didn’t want to betray Derek’s trust. Plus, it sounded like rumors were already starting. He had a feeling if the attention got out of hand, their friendship would suffer.

“Okay, so we’re close friends. It doesn’t mean he’s gay. Believe it or not, a gay man and a straight man CAN be friends. I mean, even straight women and men can be friends! It’s no different.” Dominick realized he was starting to ramble.

“Okay fine. I’ll drop it!” Alyssa finally interrupted.

The rest of the meal was fairly shallow chit-chat and gossip back and forth. Every time Dominick’s phone buzzed, Alyssa made the same scandalous face. Dominick knew this was the beginning of an inner-circle uproar. He let the idea rest for a while when his text conversation peaked his interest.

Derek: What time do you want me to pick you up tonight?
Dominick: For what??
Derek: Dinner!
Dominick: Oh I didn’t realize we had dinner plans!
Derek: Oh yeah. Wanna do dinner tonight? Great! I’ll pick you up at 7:00!
Dominick: Haha. You’re a dork. I DO have my own car, ya know.
Derek: Yeah, but I know you don’t like driving. I’ll see you then!
Dominick: Wait, where are we going??
Derek: It’s a surprise!

“So what are you doing tonight?” Alyssa asked. He had almost forgotten she was there. She was clearly just making small talk, but the timing was so coincidental with his conversation with Derek that it startled him.

“Uh… Just hanging out with Derek.” Dominick admitted. Why did it feel like this was something that should be hidden? Was he guilty?

“Oh cool. What do you guys have planned?”

“We’re gonna grab dinner and probably hang out at his parents’ place.”

“Oooh a dinner date! Cute!!” Alyssa teased. It didn’t help the thoughts that were already going through Dominick’s mind. At face value, this did feel kind of date-ish. Then again, Claire and Dominick always rode together when they went for dinner. The only difference now was that he had feelings for Derek that he didn’t have for his other best friends.

As Alyssa and Dominick walked out of the restaurant, Dominick wondered how long it would take for Lindsey or Claire to confront him about the results of Alyssa’s recon mission. Regardless, he had a feeling tonight was going to be a great night and he wouldn’t let any outside drama get in the way of that.

* * * * CHAPTER SEVEN * * * *
“It smells like seafood in here!” Dominick cringed as Derek held the door open to the Mexican restaurant.

“Oh… Uh… You don’t like seafood? We can go somewhere else if you want.” Derek fumbled. Dominick planted his face in his palm out of embarrassment.

“Sorry, I was just playing. I’m usually not a seafood person, but I’ve never been here. Let’s stay!” He tried to recover. Derek chuckled and followed Dominick to the hostess.

“Just two tonight?” the hostess asked.

“Yep!” Derek answered.

The petite blonde escorted them to a table in the back of the nearly-empty restaurant. After requesting their drinks, Derek ordered a plate of oysters.

“Have you ever tried oysters?” Derek asked Dominick.

“Not so much.” Dominick answered. The idea was becoming more and more repulsive as he pictured the dish. He was trying to hide his disgust from Derek, though.

“They’re good! Just try one!!” Derek laughed, obviously sensing Dominick’s disgust. Dominick just nodded and tried to filter out the seafood smell. The whole experience was nauseating, but he was happy to be there with Derek.

“So what’s good here?” Dominick asked, answering “Nothing” in his head sarcastically.

“Everything!” Derek answered, as if he heard Dominick’s mental response.

“Well what would be your non-fish suggestion?” Dominick clarified.

Before Derek could answer, the waitress placed a plate covered with ice and oysters on the table. She placed a bottle of Tabasco sauce and small bowl of lime wedges next to it.

“Do you know what you’d like for dinner tonight?” she asked.

“We’ll get two of the wrapped shrimp plates, please.” Derek answered. Dominick was thankful not to have to pick something from the menu, and shrimp happened to be the only seafood that he could tolerate aside from sushi rolls.

“Alright! Enjoy the oysters!” the waitress smiled and disappeared back into the kitchen.

Derek’s hands moved to the Tabasco sauce and the salt shaker on the table. After preparing a couple oysters with both condiments, he handed one to Dominick.

“Here you go! You can add lime juice if you want, but I usually don’t.” Derek looked excited.

“Okay…” Dominick forced a smile before putting the shell to his lips. “Wait! Do you chew it??” he asked in panic.

“Nope! Just swallow. Should be pretty easy for you!” Derek cocked an eyebrow and smiled devilishly. Dominick squinted a “piss off” look at him quickly and put the shell back to his lips. Derek followed along with his oyster, staring at Dominick the whole time.

Dominick took the oyster like a shot of alcohol, but had to swallow a couple extra times to get the taste of Tabasco and salt out of his mouth. Derek started laughing loudly.

“What? What are you laughing about??” Dominick asked, embarrassed.

“Nothing! The face you made was cute. You looked traumatized!” Derek continued laughing.

“I’m so glad my trauma entertains you!” Dominick started laughing, too.

“Oh, c’mon! It wasn’t THAT bad!” Derek prodded.

“No, it was okay. The flavor was good, but the texture was a little disturbing!” Dominick explained.

Shortly after, the shrimp plates were brought out from the kitchen. It was shrimp wrapped in bacon and covered in a coconut breading. Dominick was surprised that it tasted so great.

“Wow, I have to say you have good taste… For a seafood eater, anyway!” Dominick teased.

“Glad you like it!” Derek replied.

As they finished their meal, Derek was already suggesting plans for after dinner. They agreed to rent a movie and take it back to Derek’s parents’ house, which had become his home again after the breakup.

“C’mon, we’ll watch it in here.” Derek instructed as he walked back to his bedroom. The living room and family room, both equipped with DVD players and larger televisions, were empty. Dominick couldn’t understand why he’d want to watch the movie on the small TV in his room.

Derek started the movie in his room and began to undress. Dominick froze, not sure what to make of the situation. Derek climbed into the bed wearing his boxers and moved one of his pillows to the other side of the bed for Dominick. Dominick didn’t want to read too much into the situation, so he left his clothes on, but kicked off his shoes and climbed in next to Derek.

Dominick had shared a bed with straight men in the past, but it was almost as if there was an invisible barrier between them. They’d each balance themselves on the edges of the mattress, as far from each other as possible. He assumed this was straight protocol, so he placed himself at a safe distance from Derek. They had shared a bed before when renting movies, but it felt different this time for Dominick.

This time was, in fact, different. Derek adjusted himself in the bed and was now laying so close to Dominick that their shoulders and arms were touching. Dominick’s whole body tensed as he felt the heat from Derek’s bare skin. He tried desperately not to show any signs of excitement. Derek had insisted in the past that he was straight, so Dominick wasn’t going to let his imagination run wild.

Half way through the movie, Derek propped himself up on one elbow and shifted his gaze from the TV to Dominick.

“What’s up?” Dominick finally asked. Derek just giggled as he reached over and pinched Dominick’s nipple. Dominick gulped as the blood rushed to his face… and other places. The two stared at each other for a few moments before Derek put his head back to the pillow and returned to the movie.

“What the hell just happened?” Dominick thought to himself. Should he have pinched back? Or should he have said something? He mentally bitch-slapped himself a few times for freezing up.

Before long, Derek was asleep in the bed next to him. Dominick sighed and finally relaxed before falling asleep as well.

* * * * CHAPTER EIGHT * * * *

“Thanks for dinner last night!” Dominick smiled as he got out of Derek’s car the next morning.

Derek unfastened his seatbelt and walked around the car. Before Dominick could figure out what he was doing, Derek’s arms were wrapped around him in one of the best hugs he’d ever received. To top it off, the masculine smell from Derek’s cologne was a major turn-on, too.

"Any time." Derek replied before releasing Dominick.

Dominick practically skipped to the door of his home. He heard Derek’s car take off after he stepped inside at the same time his mother’s shoes scuffed down the hallway.

“Who was that?” his mother asked in a sweet, excited voice.

“His name is Derek.” Dominick answered. The look on his mother’s face coincided with her sudden mood change.

“Derek? As in Claire’s Derek? Or as in Lindsey’s Derek? Oh wait. They’re one in the same, huh? Please tell me you’re not adding yourself to THAT drama!” she went off. This was one of the downsides to having family in the inner circle.

“Yes, that Derek. And no, I’m not adding myself to the drama. We’re just hanging out.” Dominick said, blowing it off.

“Oh, I didn’t realize ‘hanging out’ consisted of sleeping together in your underwear.” His mother jabbed.

“Fuckin’ aye! Is there a billboard in town dedicated to that event?! How does everyone know about this?” Dominick was starting to get angry.

“Well, Claire has been spending time with Phil. Phil told Claire, Claire was talking to Lindsey about it, and your aunt overheard and told me.”

“This has gotten SO out of hand.” Dominick grunted.

“No shit! What are you thinking? How could you do that to Lindsey and Claire? They’re your best friends, and one of them is your cousin!” his mother argued condescendingly.

“You know what? Neither of them were in a relationship with him. They never went out on a date. They never even spent the night at each other’s houses. I hardly think that merits a claim to him. Plus, if I have to rule out every guy one or both of them have slept with, I’m going to have to travel outside the city limits. And all of that is irrelevant anyway, because he’s straight and we’re just friends.” He was almost shouting at this point.

“I’ve heard about this guy, Dominick. He’s a user. He uses people until he gets what he wants and then he drops them on their asses. And right now he’s using you as a stand-in girlfriend character as a convenience until he can find someone he’s actually interested in that doesn’t already hate him.”

“You want to know the truth?! Fine! I like him a lot, Mom. I really do. And what could he be using me for? I rarely get to pay for anything we do together. He picks me up from our house to take me back to his house and hang out, so it’s not a convenience thing. We’re not doing anything sexual, so he’s not using me for that. So he’s using me by enjoying my company? That seems like a pretty good deal to me! And it’s more than I can say for most of the people in my life right now!”

“You’re going to make a fool of yourself falling for this straight man.” She continued to jab.

“Oh yeah. God forbid I make a fool of myself for the sake of a potential relationship. Thank God you didn’t make a fool of yourself staying with a man that abused you for thirteen years, or a druggie for six years, or a man that cheated on you on a regular basis for three years. That doesn’t look foolish at all!” Dominick knew he was going straight for the throat with that one.

“Well you should have learned from my mistakes! Not followed in my footsteps!”

“I’m not following in your footsteps, Mom. Do you realize after seeing your screwed up relationships, Dad’s screwed up relationships, and all my friends’ screwed up relationships, I’ve never even let myself go on a date? I’m twenty-two years old and I have never been in an actual relationship. I’m not saying that’s what this is between Derek and I. But I am saying that I’m letting myself take a risk this time.” Dominick’s tone of voice had changed from pissed off to hurt as he continued talking.

“Fine. Do whatever you want.” His mother almost whispered as she disappeared down the hallway.

Things were starting to overwhelm Dominick. He wanted so badly to get a second opinion on Derek’s confusing behavior, but everyone in his group was biased and/or didn’t approve of their friendship. It’s not like he could vent about this fight to Derek since he was the topic of it all. It felt like he was closing himself off from all the people he used to run to in times like this.

* * * * CHAPTER NINE * * * *

“Well. You guys seem happy together.” Claire sneered.

“What the hell are you talking about, Claire?!” Dominick pleaded.

“You and Derek. Watching you two throughout this party has been ridiculous.”

“Claire! Derek is straight. We’re just friends. You’re overreacting!” Dominick explained.

“But you have feelings for him, don’t you?” Claire said bitterly.

“Why is this a problem, Claire? I don’t get it!” Dominick was starting to get annoyed. It’s not like Claire made the best relationship decisions in the past, and even though Dominick tried to reason with her, he never got angry toward her about them. Then it occurred to him. “You’re jealous, aren’t you?”

“What a joke.” She said evasively. “The point is, I went through this Lindsey over and over again. I’m so tired of my friends going after the same guys I’ve been with. I’ve come to expect it from her, but I guess I thought our friendship was better than mine and hers.”

“Claire, I’m being serious. Nothing has happened between us and nothing will ever happen between us. He’s straight, and I’m a guy. Case closed.” The words stung as they came out of Dominick’s mouth.

“Yeah, right. You think I can’t see the signs? You and Derek hug each other every time one of you leaves the room. And when you’re separated, Derek looks around constantly until you get back. And that hug when we left? That was not a straight guy, pat on the back and hug from a safe distance situation. It was a full body embrace and it was like five minutes long! I was waiting for you to just start humping in the middle of the driveway!” Claire had burst into full-blown tangent.

“You know what? Screw this! I’m not going to keep arguing over this dumb bullshit. Derek and I are adults and if we want to be friends, or anything else for that matter, we don’t need anyone’s permission. I’ve already explained the situation to you, now get off my ass about it!” Dominick demanded.

“Wow, you are just like Lindsey.” Claire added.

“Alright, that’s it. I’m done.” Dominick said as he climbed out of the car at a stop light. “Take care, Claire.”

“Are you kidding me? Get back in the-“ Claire’s voice was cut off with the slamming of her car door. They weren’t far from Derek’s house, so Dominick decided to walk back.

Claire’s car turned around. She was now coasting up the road, pleading for him to get back in the car. After he ignored her for a full block, she stopped the car in the middle of the road and got out to follow him on foot.

She opened her mouth to apologize, but Dominick’s anger and replaced the voice of reason he had before.

“Fuck off. I said I was done. Just get in your car and go home.” Dominick said in a cold voice. With that, Claire’s eyes began to tear, but she did what he said. She turned the car around violently and sped down the street.

Dominick texted Derek to let him know he was on his way back. Since Derek was asking him to stay in the first place, he assumed this wouldn’t be an issue. Derek confirmed this with a “Good! Just walk in when ya get here!” response.

The five-minute walk felt like it was hours in Dominick’s head. The overwhelmed feeling he had after his argument with his mom had returned and he was feeling it more harshly with his slight inebriation. When he pushed the door open at Derek’s parents’ house, it was evident that the party was over. Apparently everyone had left shortly after Claire and Dominick.

“Glad you’re ba-“ Derek rounded the corner and stopped in his tracks. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m fine.” Dominick lied.

“What happened?” Derek asked, realizing that he didn’t come back to continue the evening’s festivities.

Dominick’s guard was down completely. He opened up to Derek about the arguments he had with his mother and Claire. He was on the verge of tears when he explained what he said to Claire minutes ago. He hated that his emotions were so much stronger in the recent month.

“Let’s go for a drive.” Derek said, grabbing his keys.

“Are you sober?” Dominick asked. He had a strong stance against drinking and driving.

“Yep. I actually stopped drinking pretty early in the night. I wasn’t really in the mood to get drunk tonight.” He explained. Dominick followed him out to the car and they took off down the street. Derek turned on the radio and rolled down the windows.

“This always relaxed me after a bad day!” Derek explained over the music.
It took Dominick a few minutes to realize where they were going. Derek was driving toward Claire’s house.

“Where are we going?” Dominick half-demanded.

“We’re going to fix this.” Derek explained.

“Uh, no. Trust me. This will make things worse.” Dominick sighed.

“Friends come and go, but family is forever. You can’t let something like this go. You may not have the chance to fix it later.” Derek encouraged. Even through the drama, Dominick thought it was sweet to see Derek care about this.

The car came to a stop in front of Claire’s house. Her bedroom light was on upstairs.

“She’s still awake.” Dominick acknowledged out loud.

“I know.” Derek smiled. “I texted her on the way over. She’s waiting for you at the door. I’m gonna sit here while you guys patch things up, so don’t take too long.” Derek joked and gave a quick wink.

After about ten minutes Dominick returned to the car. The conversation went well and things were resolved between Dominick and Claire. The drive back to Derek’s house was fairly silent. Dominick was starting to doze off in the passenger seat while the wind tossed his hair around his face. When they got back to Derek’s house, he gave Dominick a light nudge to wake him up. As they exited the car and began walking to the door, Dominick called out Derek’s name softly.

When Derek turned around to see what Dominick wanted, he was embraced in Dominick’s arms.

“Thank you.” Dominick whispered.

Derek didn’t answer. He placed the side of his head against the top of Dominick’s, which was rested on his chest. They stood in the embrace outside for several minutes; Derek listening to the rhythm of Dominick’s breathing, and Dominick listening to the beat of Derek’s heart.

Some mighty fine writing there, SayWhat! Hope to read more soon.

Derek sounds so sweet! I find it hard to picture him as the cocky douchebag that the other characters see him as. This is a good read! I'm looking forward to reading more :-)

I just found this story - I love it and hope there's more soon!

* * * * CHAPTER TEN * * * *

Dominick was excited to see Derek’s name on his Caller ID. The work day was dragging, and to be honest Derek had been on his mind already.

“Hey… I need to talk to you about something.” Derek’s voice sounded serious.

“Um… Okay. What’s up?” Dominick tried to sound like he didn’t pick up on the ominous tone.

“Let’s meet for dinner tonight, okay? We’ll talk then. Italian sound good?” Derek asked, masking the seriousness with a kind tone.

“Yeah, that sounds good. Is everything okay?” Dominick asked, the concern beginning to rise in his voice.

“We’ll talk later, okay? Don’t worry.” Derek told him.

Dominick’s heart was racing when he stepped out of the car and made his way to the double doors of the restaurant. He accomplished nothing in the rest of his work day after his phone conversation with Derek. Instead he spent the time conjuring up thousands of theories about things that could have gone wrong.

Did the rumors about their time together finally get back to him? Would that bother him enough to warrant a serious talk?? Or maybe he had gotten into another relationship and the girl had an issue with their friendship. It wouldn’t be the first time. Although he found this one unlikely, since it had now been two months since they started spending time together and they were practically inseparable. If there was a significant person in Derek’s life, Dominick would have known about it.

Dominick’s brainstorming came to a total stop when he walked into the restaurant and saw Derek standing at the hostess station. It was the same feeling he got after taking a drink of cold water after a really long workout. Seeing Derek was like a drug that coursed through his body and, as much as he hated to admit it, even an eight hour day at work away from him nearly gave him the shakes these days. Despite his efforts to resist, he was in love with his best friend.

Derek smiled and gave Dominick a hug as if they hadn’t seen each other in years. It was the perfect remedy to Dominick’s withdrawals. Derek gently guided Dominick by the shoulder around the hostess station and they followed the hostess down the hallway and through the sea of tables until they arrived at an empty two-seater.

“How was your day at work?” Derek asked after they took their seats.

“It was good. What did you want to talk about?” Dominick couldn’t resist. It had been plaguing him all day. Derek laughed a little and looked into Dominick’s eyes for a moment before answer.

“I have some ba-… some interesting news.” Derek started.

“Okay...”

“With the economy and everything the way it is, my company is doing a lot of ‘shifting’ around.” Derek tip-toed. Dominick blinked and practically held his breath.

“The good news is that I’ve been offered a promotion.” Derek continued.

“Wow, that’s what this is about? You worried the hell out of me! Congratulations!” Dominick exclaimed. His excitement quickly faded as Derek didn’t share the enthusiasm.

“The promotion is sort of by default, though. They’re eliminating my position in this region. I have to transfer to Brooklyn.” Derek explained more solemnly.

“Did you accept the offer?” Dominick almost whispered.

“I had to, Dominick. I can’t be unemployed living with my parents. I have to support my daughter.” Derek explained. Dominick didn’t see much of Derek’s daughter. She spent most of her time with her mother. Sometimes Dominick completely forgot Derek was a father.

“I understand.” Dominick said after a period of silence. “When?”

“I fly out next week for five days to get things sorted out. Then I’ll be back for a week before I drive out there with Amber. I’ve already sorted out the custody situation with her mother. With her being unemployed, we decided it would be best for me to have primary custody.” Derek continued to explain.

“Wow. Those are some big changes. I hope… I hope it all works out.” Dominick was almost completely shut down by this point.

“It will be a challenge, but I think it’s for the best. I actually have family in Brooklyn. My aunt offered rooms for us in her home. Everything is just lining up, ya know?” Derek explained.

“Well congratulations again. It sounds like it was meant to be.” Dominick said, forcing a smile.

The rest of the meal was fairly quiet. Dominick’s mind was racing even more than before and he had lost his appetite as a result. Prior to getting close to Derek, it had been years since he last cried. Why did it seem like he was so much more hypersensitive around him? He had to concentrate on his breathing to avoid the tears forming in his eyes.

Dominick went home after dinner. It was the first time he had spent an early evening at home in weeks. After staring at the ceiling above his bed for several minutes, he decided to text Derek.

Dominick: Sorry if I seem like a douche about the whole Brooklyn thing. I’m glad for you, really… Just wished we had become friends sooner. :)
Derek: Me too. I’ll see you tomorrow, right?
Dominick: Definitely!

Okay, so Derek sounds like he's turning into a good friend. I'm still not sure I trust him though. It's a good thing for the story that Dominick does, though!

I posted that last comment before I saw a new chapter had been posted. That's the danger of leaving a tab open with a chapter for later reading. You miss things.

So, thoughts on this latest development... Dominick seems to be taking it well.
