* * * * CHAPTER NINE * * * *
“Well. You guys seem happy together.” Claire sneered.
“What the hell are you talking about, Claire?!” Dominick pleaded.
“You and Derek. Watching you two throughout this party has been ridiculous.”
“Claire! Derek is straight. We’re just friends. You’re overreacting!” Dominick explained.
“But you have feelings for him, don’t you?” Claire said bitterly.
“Why is this a problem, Claire? I don’t get it!” Dominick was starting to get annoyed. It’s not like Claire made the best relationship decisions in the past, and even though Dominick tried to reason with her, he never got angry toward her about them. Then it occurred to him. “You’re jealous, aren’t you?”
“What a joke.” She said evasively. “The point is, I went through this Lindsey over and over again. I’m so tired of my friends going after the same guys I’ve been with. I’ve come to expect it from her, but I guess I thought our friendship was better than mine and hers.”
“Claire, I’m being serious. Nothing has happened between us and nothing will ever happen between us. He’s straight, and I’m a guy. Case closed.” The words stung as they came out of Dominick’s mouth.
“Yeah, right. You think I can’t see the signs? You and Derek hug each other every time one of you leaves the room. And when you’re separated, Derek looks around constantly until you get back. And that hug when we left? That was not a straight guy, pat on the back and hug from a safe distance situation. It was a full body embrace and it was like five minutes long! I was waiting for you to just start humping in the middle of the driveway!” Claire had burst into full-blown tangent.
“You know what? Screw this! I’m not going to keep arguing over this dumb bullshit. Derek and I are adults and if we want to be friends, or anything else for that matter, we don’t need anyone’s permission. I’ve already explained the situation to you, now get off my ass about it!” Dominick demanded.
“Wow, you are just like Lindsey.” Claire added.
“Alright, that’s it. I’m done.” Dominick said as he climbed out of the car at a stop light. “Take care, Claire.”
“Are you kidding me? Get back in the-“ Claire’s voice was cut off with the slamming of her car door. They weren’t far from Derek’s house, so Dominick decided to walk back.
Claire’s car turned around. She was now coasting up the road, pleading for him to get back in the car. After he ignored her for a full block, she stopped the car in the middle of the road and got out to follow him on foot.
She opened her mouth to apologize, but Dominick’s anger and replaced the voice of reason he had before.
“Fuck off. I said I was done. Just get in your car and go home.” Dominick said in a cold voice. With that, Claire’s eyes began to tear, but she did what he said. She turned the car around violently and sped down the street.
Dominick texted Derek to let him know he was on his way back. Since Derek was asking him to stay in the first place, he assumed this wouldn’t be an issue. Derek confirmed this with a “Good! Just walk in when ya get here!” response.
The five-minute walk felt like it was hours in Dominick’s head. The overwhelmed feeling he had after his argument with his mom had returned and he was feeling it more harshly with his slight inebriation. When he pushed the door open at Derek’s parents’ house, it was evident that the party was over. Apparently everyone had left shortly after Claire and Dominick.
“Glad you’re ba-“ Derek rounded the corner and stopped in his tracks. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine.” Dominick lied.
“What happened?” Derek asked, realizing that he didn’t come back to continue the evening’s festivities.
Dominick’s guard was down completely. He opened up to Derek about the arguments he had with his mother and Claire. He was on the verge of tears when he explained what he said to Claire minutes ago. He hated that his emotions were so much stronger in the recent month.
“Let’s go for a drive.” Derek said, grabbing his keys.
“Are you sober?” Dominick asked. He had a strong stance against drinking and driving.
“Yep. I actually stopped drinking pretty early in the night. I wasn’t really in the mood to get drunk tonight.” He explained. Dominick followed him out to the car and they took off down the street. Derek turned on the radio and rolled down the windows.
“This always relaxed me after a bad day!” Derek explained over the music.
It took Dominick a few minutes to realize where they were going. Derek was driving toward Claire’s house.
“Where are we going?” Dominick half-demanded.
“We’re going to fix this.” Derek explained.
“Uh, no. Trust me. This will make things worse.” Dominick sighed.
“Friends come and go, but family is forever. You can’t let something like this go. You may not have the chance to fix it later.” Derek encouraged. Even through the drama, Dominick thought it was sweet to see Derek care about this.
The car came to a stop in front of Claire’s house. Her bedroom light was on upstairs.
“She’s still awake.” Dominick acknowledged out loud.
“I know.” Derek smiled. “I texted her on the way over. She’s waiting for you at the door. I’m gonna sit here while you guys patch things up, so don’t take too long.” Derek joked and gave a quick wink.
After about ten minutes Dominick returned to the car. The conversation went well and things were resolved between Dominick and Claire. The drive back to Derek’s house was fairly silent. Dominick was starting to doze off in the passenger seat while the wind tossed his hair around his face. When they got back to Derek’s house, he gave Dominick a light nudge to wake him up. As they exited the car and began walking to the door, Dominick called out Derek’s name softly.
When Derek turned around to see what Dominick wanted, he was embraced in Dominick’s arms.
“Thank you.” Dominick whispered.
Derek didn’t answer. He placed the side of his head against the top of Dominick’s, which was rested on his chest. They stood in the embrace outside for several minutes; Derek listening to the rhythm of Dominick’s breathing, and Dominick listening to the beat of Derek’s heart.
