So, thoughts on this latest development... Dominick seems to be taking it well.

Agreed. While it would be great if Derek refused the promotion and stayed to proclaim his love for Dominick, it wouldn't be the most responsible decision. I'm sure Dominick would understand.

Of course, the story may not be over when Derek moves and there shouldn't be any reason for them not to keep in touch. I sure hope there is some passionate love-making before the story ends. If there isn't any, Dominick better be pretty pissed that he's been lead on for so long.

I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment, SayWhat :]

* * * * CHAPTER ELEVEN * * * *

After the announcement that Derek was relocating became public, the people in Dominick’s life that were once outraged at their friendship were suddenly offering their sympathies. It was clear to everyone that they had become much closer than anyone could have expected. Unfortunately, it was equally clear that Dominick was hurting over the news.

Derek’s family arranged a dinner at their favorite restaurant before his short trip to Brooklyn. His friends were organizing a going away party as well, but this was more of a family event. Dominick was surprised when Derek’s parents invited him to join them.

Half way through the meal, Derek’s father cleared his throat and the surrounding family members grew silent.

“I just wanted to let you two know, whether the rumors are true or not, I am happy as long as you are both happy.” He announced. Dominick’s eyes widened and he nearly choked on his food. Derek laughed it off, shaking his head slightly. The rest of the table laughed at their embarrassment, agreed in various ways, and continued their meal. Dominick was delighted by the supporting nature of Derek’s family, even if he was straight.

“Well, I haven’t gone to the dark side yet,” Derek clarified, still laughing, “but thanks anyway.”

After dinner, Derek drove Dominick home. When he parked the car, he got out for the last hug they’d share for five days. Dominick had to fight the tears back again. He hated feeling so vulnerable in front of Derek.

“I’ll be back in five days!” Derek assured as he let go of Dominick.

“I know!” Dominick smiled. It was so difficult to balance the happiness he felt with Derek standing in front of him with the sadness he felt from the idea of losing him.

It was Monday, and the first day Dominick would not see Derek since they began spending time together two months ago. He resisted the urge to text Derek throughout the day. He didn’t want to appear clingy, and he also didn’t want to risk that his thumbs would take over and beg Derek not to leave. It didn’t take long for his phone to buzz, though.

Derek: Hypothetically speaking, would it be weird if I said I miss you?
Dominick: Haha. I miss you, too!

They continued texting throughout the night until Derek went to bed. He was three hours ahead in Brooklyn and had to go to his office early in the morning.
The next day Dominick maintained the same routine. He’d wait for Derek to initiate a conversation. It had almost become a game to him to see if Derek actually thought about him as much as he thought about Derek. As childish as it was, Derek didn’t let him down.

Derek: Jerk!!!
Dominick: What?! Why am I a jerk?!
Derek: You stopped talkin’ to me.
Dominick: I don’t wanna get on your nerves. :(
Derek: Haha. Not possible.
Dominick: Don’t lie!! Haha.
Derek: I’m not!!!
Dominick: Okay, but I’m saving this message so I can prove you asked for it later on down the road! Haha.
Derek: Psh. You won’t ever need it. :)

Their banter continued throughout the week. As much as Dominick loved it, he knew it wasn’t smart to let himself get even more attached to Derek.

The week finally passed and Dominick was waiting eagerly at the airport for Derek to return home. His whole body surged when Derek rounded the corner at the airport. He had to resist the urge to run toward him like a cheesy Hallmark movie, but in seconds he was once again in one the best embraces he’d ever felt. It always amazed him that Derek could deliver a better hug than the last every time.

On the drive home, Derek had many exciting things to share about Brooklyn. He sounded thrilled about the move. Dominick tried his best not to be selfish and sound equally excited.

“Dom has a car??” Derek’s father sounded shocked as they walked in the front door.

“Of course I have a car! I have to drive to and from work!” Dominick said as he and Derek laughed aloud.

After catching up with his family, Derek and Dominick retreated to his bedroom to watch TV and relax. Dominick hopped into bed with Derek with much less reservation than he once had. He was living in the moment, absorbing the best of every last second they had together.

“I’m gonna miss this.” Derek almost whispered. Dominick wanted to ignore it. He was trying not to dwell on the topic.

“I will, too.” He smiled, turning to make eye contact with Derek.

“Then come with me.” Derek half-asked.

“Wouldn’t that be nice?” Dominick laughed. He couldn’t tell if Derek was being serious or not.

“Yeah! That’s why I asked, dork. You’ve always wanted to see New York. You could drive with me and I’ll pay for a ticket to fly you home. And if you like it there, you can come back and get your things.” He reasoned.

“It’s not that simple, Derek.” Dominick turned serious.

“Sure it is. Why wouldn’t it be? You don’t have any kids, you’re not in college. I know you like your job, but it’s not what you want to do with your life. And most of all, I know you want to get out of this town. How many chances do you think you’re going to get?” Derek explained.

“That’s cute, and it sounds simple enough. But there’s no way I’ll be able to find a job in Brooklyn that pays anywhere near what I make out here. All of my family is here. And to be one-hundred percent honest, I’m nervous about where our friendship will go once you find a girl you want to get serious with. It didn’t work out so well for anyone last time.” Dominick rambled.

“So you still don’t trust me?” Derek asked. Dominick paused before answering.

“It’s not that I don’t trust you. I just know my luck and I assume the worst. The point is that I have responsibilities to other people here.” Dominick explained.

“That’s a cop out, but you have to do whatever you feel is best for you. Please don’t let your life pass you by worrying about what you owe other people. I’d hate to see you wake up one day and wonder ‘What if?’ after it’s too late. If you want to come, you'll make it happen. If you don't want to come with me, just look me in the eyes and tell me it's not what you want.” Derek pushed.

“I’m sorry, Derek. I just can’t.”

“I understand.” Derek said solemnly, turning away from Dominick to face the wall.

Oh oh! Just finishing catching up on an excellent story and I already could bitch slap Dominick...lol He can't forgo a chance like this and he seems to dwell on that "straight" thought about Derek. Not saying a straight guy and gay guy can't be best friend, but from the sound of this, it has developed into something a little more. Maybe not sex, but the bond it too deep. What if I come and dump a bucket of cold water over Dominick's head to wake him up............... Don't keep us waiting too long for an update, SayWhat.

Hmm. Interesting perspective! I don't think many people, especially younger people, comprehend an emotional stage between a friendship and a relationship. It seems like if you're "more than friends" the next natural step is "relationship". Sure, there are millions of sexual variations to it all, but emotionally it seems pretty black and white to most people.

Thanks for all the kind responses! I'm really glad you are all enjoying the story so far!! :)

* * * * CHAPTER TWELVE * * * *

“I changed my mind.” Dominick whispered as soon as Derek rolled over in the morning.

“About what?” Derek asked, playing dumb.

“Brooklyn. I’m not saying I want to move because I’ve never even been there. But I want to come with you and scope it out.” Dominick clarified.

“Sounds reasonable. I’m glad you changed your mind!” Derek smiled.

As soon as Dominick went back to work the next day, he requested the time off for his trip with Derek. There were a few appointments he had to reschedule before he take off, though. The first was with a vendor and the other was with his financial advisor.

“Hi Susan, this is Dominick. I know we’re scheduled to meet this Friday, but unfortunately I’ve been called out of town to Brooklyn and I’ll need to reschedule.” Dominick spoke into the phone.

“Too funny! That’s where our home office is! Have you been there before?” Susan asked.

“Nope! I’ve never been further east than Texas!” Dominick laughed.

“Oh you’ll fall in love with it. And then you can just work for us out there!” She joked.

“Yeah, that seems to be the general consensus!” Dominick had to laugh mentally at the irony.

“Well I hope you enjoy your time off. Call me when you get back and we’ll reschedule!” Susan finished.

That took care of one appointment smoothly. The next would be easy to rearrange as well, since it was a personal appointment.

“Hey Jacob, it’s Dominick.”

“Dominick! How’s it going, buddy? Ready for your appointment on Friday?” Jacob confirmed.

“Actually that’s why I’m calling. I’m taking a trip to Brooklyn this weekend and I won’t be able to make it. Mind if we reschedule?”

“Not a problem! Are you traveling for business or pleasure?” Jacob asked.

“Pleasure, hopefully!” Dominick laughed.

“Sounds like a good time! You’ll fall in love with Brooklyn. There’s no place like it!” Jacob assured.

“Oh, you’ve been there, too? Apparently I’m the only person that hasn’t been there yet!”

“Actually, they just assigned me to our branch office in Brooklyn. I’ll be flying out once every quarter to handle some of the clients in the region. So if you ended up moving out there, you wouldn’t even have to change advisors!” Jacob joked.

As soon as Dominick got off the phone, he texted Derek with the news.

Dominick: I got the time off work! Is there a sign on my forehead about Brooklyn?!
Derek: Great! Not that I know of, why?

Dominick explained the details of his last two phone calls.

Derek: Haha. It’s destiny!

As cheesy as it sounded, Dominick couldn’t help but wonder if he was right. Dominick didn’t really believe in coincidence. In fact, he overanalyzed almost everything.

Before he knew it, it was Wednesday and Dominick was throwing his bag into the back of Derek’s car. It was a strange feeling to see Derek packing all of his belongings into the car this time. The sight of his empty room hit Dominick harder than he expected.

“I thought you were bringing Amber with you…” Dominick half-asked.

“That was the original plan, but we didn’t think she’d do well with the drive. So my mom is going to fly her out there once we’re all settled. It gives her more time with her mother, too.” Derek explained.

“Oh… So you were going to make this drive all by yourself?! Are you insane?!” Dominick suddenly realized.

“My company would have paid for hotel rooms between here and there. It’s only a 26 hour drive.” Derek reasoned.

“Oh, 26 hours. Is that all?” Dominick laughed.

After the trunk slammed, they took their seats and pulled out of the driveway. It wasn’t long until Dominick couldn’t see any evidence of the city in the side mirror of the car. His heart was doing a dance in his chest. This was the first time in a long time he was doing something risky. He always knew what the outcome would be, or what he wanted it to be, in past adventures. But this was new territory and it scared the hell out of him and excited him all at once.

Well thank the lord, I really didn't want to bitch slap Dominick or dump water over his head. This is getting more and more intense with the fact that Amber isn't driving with them. I like this story.

I couldn't sleep tonight, so here's Chapter 13! Thank you all for letting me share this story with you!!

* * * * CHAPTER THIRTEEN * * * *

Shortly after crossing the first state line, Dominick decided to drive for the rest of the daylight hours.

“What’s your deal with driving?” Derek asked bluntly.

“What do you mean?” Dominick asked.

“Why do you hate driving so much?” Derek clarified.

“A couple years ago I was in a bad car accident. It was dark and raining and I was driving with my little brother in the passenger seat. Thankfully nobody was hurt, but driving still gives me the creeps sometimes. Especially on mountainous roads, at night, and while it’s raining.” Dominick answered.

“Oh. That makes sense.” Derek replied.

The daylight was starting to fade and they had managed to cross through another state on their journey to Brooklyn. The radio was starting to fade in and out, so Derek plugged in his iPod and changed the stereo to auxiliary. He turned the volume up as “Just The Way You Are” by Bruno Mars began to play.

When the chorus began, Derek ran his fingers through the hair above Dominick’s ear. He let his fingers drift down the side of Dominick’s neck to his shoulder and down his bicep as he sang dramatically.

“When I see your face, there’s not a thing that I would change. ‘Cause you’re amazing just the way you are. And when you smile, the whole world stops and stares for a while. ‘Cause you’re amazing just the way you are.” As he finished the chorus, he reached toward Dominick’s chest and pinched his nipple.

Dominick nearly drove off the road at the shock of it all. Derek got a good laugh out of it, though.

“Maybe I should take over before you have another reason to be afraid of driving.” Derek suggested playfully.

“You’re such a dick!” Dominick laughed, “But I’ll take you up on that offer.”

Dominick was grateful to be done driving for a while. He hadn’t gotten much sleep the night before with everything rambling through his brain. After they got back onto the road, Dominick pulled a pillow behind his head and started drifting to sleep.

He wasn’t sure how long he was asleep, but he woke up occasionally to the feeling of Derek’s hand on his knee. He also woke up on his own more than once to catch Derek staring in his direction.

“I know I’m not the best driver, but it’s my understanding that keeping your eyes in the direction you’re traveling is suggested.” Dominick teased.

“Wrong. You have to keep an eye on your side mirrors and blind spots, too. Never know when something’s going to sneak up on you!” Derek bluffed. Dominick just smiled his usual Derek-just-said-something-cute smile.

Around 11:00pm Dominick asked Derek if he was okay to continue driving. He responded confidently, but Dominick wasn’t comfortable with idea of Derek being the only one awake in the car all night. He put his pillow in the back seat and sat his chair upright to the point that it was uncomfortable. That would surely keep him awake.

They drove mostly in verbal silence through the night, enjoying the shuffle of Derek’s iPod. Dominick was usually nervous about singing in front of other people, but some songs were just too good to resist. Derek chimed in on a couple of his favorites as well.

It seemed like an eternity and a half had passed before they were even close to Derek’s aunt’s house. Dominick loved it, though. The last two months had gone by so fast, and it was a relief to see that time was being more kind to him now that a long period of separation was on its way.

“Honey! We’re home!!” Derek announced jokingly, stopping the car. They both made various moaning sounds as they stretched the soreness out of their legs.

The air was crisp and cool as it hit Dominick’s face. It lacked the smell of desert that he was used to experiencing back home. Derek’s aunt lived in a four-bedroom home in a suburb close to the city. It looked much smaller from the outside. Inside, it was a vast, multi-level house with tall ceilings and plenty of space in every room.

“Aunt Cindy, this is Dominick. Dominick, this is Aunt Cindy.” Derek introduced.

“Nice to meet you!” Dominick smiled, shaking her hand.

“This isn’t a business meeting! Give me a hug!” She laughed, embracing Dominick. “I’ve heard a lot about you!” Dominick was actually surprised to hear this. He hugged the woman back. She was about a foot shorter than him and much older than he had imagined. She must have been in her mid-sixties.

Aunt Cindy lead Dominick on a tour of the house, making sure to point out all the things she’s had to replace since she purchased the home twenty-six years ago.

Three of the bedrooms and one bathroom were located on the top level of the house. When they passed the bathroom and first bedroom, they reached the end of the hallway where there were two bedroom doors across from each other. She turned to the right and opened in the door gently.

“This is where you’ll be staying!” She cheered.

“This is wonderful. Thanks so much for having me this week.” Dominick answered.

“Well you boys must be tired from all that driving. I’ll let you get settled in and rest a bit! Do you like Italian Sausage?” She asked.

“He LOVES sausage!” Derek teased. Dominick’s face turned a little red.

“Great! That’s what I’ll cook tonight then!” His aunt replied, ignoring the innuendo.

“I’m exhausted!” Derek sighed, falling onto the fold-out bed and closing his eyes. Dominick didn’t reply. He just climbed onto the bed next to Derek and let the rhythm of the fan overhead sing him to sleep.
