Official 52nd Annual Grammy Awards Nomination Thread

How come Silversun Pickups are still eligible for Best New Artist?

If you did some research you could have answered your own question.

The Silversun Pickups could have been out from 1913 and released 2000 albums but if they never went mainstream until 2008 then they are eligible for Best New Artist.

Silversun Pickups finally caught the publics eye with Lazy Eye and then got noticed by the Grammy voters.

Many past BNA winners had multiple albums before they won the award.

I got this straight from the Grammy website:

Best New Artist: For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist. Note that this is not necessarily the first album released by an artist.

So in otherwords you can release as many albums as you want but until people start knowing who you are you don't exist on the Grammy radar.

And i like that rule because why make music if you don't want people to hear it. So if you are going to be selfish with your music and not share it with the world and get yourself out there then you will not get a Grammy.

To be fair though they are on an indie label so they probably didn't have enough money for big money promotions. However, thats no excuse really. They were content to just do mini tours all over the world with their core fans alone and could care less about mainstream America.

But Lazy Eye got all that airplay in 2007 is my point? That would have been they year the public noticed them and the year they should have been eligible for the category, not 2009 simply because the new CD debuted in the Top 10.

ok wow......I had to take a breather cuz I was ready to bust my tv and computer when the announcement ceremony was over and no whitney was mentioned! Haha......I cant believe they snubbed whitney like that. Thats wrong!! i am officially boycotting the grammys.

And just how did Whitney react to the news of her shutout?

Probably by snorting coke off the Grammy she won for The Bodyguard.

^^ Yup. Not to mention her rendition of "I'm Every Woman...when I'm this high."

Whitney Houston: Platinum Once More

12/8/2009 5:09 PM ET

whitneyhouston-092809.jpg

(RTTNews) - Last week's sales figures have revealed that Whitney Houston has scored her first platinum album in seven years with her latest release, I Look to You.

The album has moved more than 1 million copies in the U.S. since its debut on August 28, enough to earn Houston the coveted RIAA distinction.

I Look to You debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart back in August, selling 305,000 copies. The project gave Houston her first number one album since 2002's Just Whitney, which moved 205,000 copies.
The singer is currently planning her first world tour in 11 years in support of the album.

"This is my first full tour since the My Love Is Your Love tour and I am so excited to be performing for my fans around the world after all this time," she wrote on her website. "I am putting together a great show and cannot wait to perform the songs from my new album I Look to You along with some of your favorites."

In other news, Houston did not receive a single nomination for the 2010 Grammy Awards. The issue is making headlines, as many industry minds believe she was snubbed.

Even in her second week of in the US alone Susan Boyle sold more than Whitney in her highest week. Almost DOUBLE!:rotflmao::rotflmao::rotflmao:

This past week, Boyle's "Dream" held on to the No. 1 slot for a second week with sales of 527,000, after bowing last week with 701,000. Now, with 1.23 million sold in its first two weeks, "Dream" is chasing after Taylor Swift's "Fearless" (2.53 million sold this year) for the title of 2009's best selling album. With four sales weeks left in the SoundScan tracking year, Boyle could overtake Swift's sales figure by year's end

Taylor Swift and Beyonce will perform at the Grammy Awards next month.

The Recording Academy said Tuesday that other performers will include the Black Eyed Peas, Lady Antebellum and Maxwell. Beyonce has 10 Grammy nominations; Swift has eight.

A stage-crashing Kanye West interrupted Swift's acceptance speech at this year's MTV Video Music Awards to say Beyonce should have won for best female video instead. West later apologized.

The Grammys will be presented at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Jan. 31. The show will air on CBS.

The Recording Academy says additional performers will be announced at a later date.

Lady Gaga, Pink, Green Day, Dave Matthews Band and Zac Brown Band are the latest acts scheduled to perform at the 52nd annual Grammy Awards, it was announced today (Jan. 5) on the Recording Academy's official twitter page.

Taking place at the Los Angeles' Staples Center on Jan. 31, and airing live on CBS, the Grammys will also feature performances by nominated artists Beyoncé, the Black Eyed Peas, Taylor Swift, Maxwell and Lady Antebellum. More artists and presenters will be revealed soon, according to the announcement.

Now that Lady Gaga and Dave Matthews Band have been added to the roster, all five nominees in the Album of the Year category -- which also includes Beyoncé, the Black Eyed Peas and Swift -- will perform on the show.

Grammys Will Stage 3-D Tribute To Michael Jackson

Last year, as the Grammys were approaching, the show's executive producer was in frequent talks with Michael Jackson to appear on the telecast to celebrate the 25th anniversary of "Thriller."

Ken Ehrlich, the Grammy telecast's co-executive producer, had presented several ideas for performers, including Justin Timberlake and Usher, all of which excited Jackson. But in the end, he declined the show's invitation.

"He just wasn't ready for it," Ehrlich said.

This year, Jackson will be a focal point of the show, with an unprecedented posthumous tribute. The Grammys will broadcast a 3-D clip the singer made for his hit "Earth Song," a video that was to be integral to his comeback concerts in London in July 2009 - shows that never happened because of his June 25 death in Los Angeles.

Usher, Celine Dion, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson and Smokey Robinson will perform alongside the clip, which Ehrlich says will be the first time an awards show will feature 3-D.

GRAMMY FanBuzz Visualizer Launched

Fan barometer data visualization tool added to GRAMMY "We're All Fans" advertising campaign

The Recording Academy and TBWA\Chiat\Day Los Angeles unveiled an addition to this year's "We're All Fans" advertising campaign for the 52nd Annual GRAMMY Awards. In addition to the TV commercials, out-of-home and print elements previously unveiled, the www.wereallfans.com Web site — a first-of-its-kind interactive fan experience featuring portraits of GRAMMY-nominated artists composed entirely of real-time, fan-generated YouTube, Twitter, and Flickr postings — also houses the FanBuzz Visualizer. The FanBuzz Visualizer is a data visualization tool that will act as a barometer of fandom on the Web in real time.

"While this year's 'We're All Fans' GRAMMY ad campaign celebrates the power of social media and its unique ability to directly connect fans and artists, the FanBuzz Visualizer furthers that interaction and gives fans a voice to express support for some of their favorite GRAMMY nominees," said Evan Greene, Chief Marketing Officer for The Recording Academy. "With the FanBuzz Visualizer, we have an up-to-the-moment barometer for how the fans feel about some of the artists they love.
