Official 81st Annual Academy Awards (Oscars) Thread

Re: The 2009 Academy Awards.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen any of the movies yet (only clips). But it seems to me that Anne Hathaway has been getting a lot of buzz.

I read on JustJared that the GoldenGlobe website accidentally labeled Anne Hathaway as having won Best Actress on the nominees list. They promptly fixed the "error."

Maybe she won... We'll find out tonight.

Re: The 2009 Academy Awards.

I think its an absolute joke that Vicky Christina Barcelona beat out Mamma Mia for Best Comedy/Musical. How MM cannot win in a musical category and against those other pictures is a mystery. I get so sick of these people who vote for these awards. I dont know beyond the awards for Adams on HBO that I agree with any of the choices.
This is the same kind of thinking that will likely prevent Milk from winning and the same attitude that gives us best picture for Crash and not Brokeback Mountain.

Re: The 2009 Academy Awards.

The Golden Globes were pretty good. Nice to see Colin Farrell get some love (not that he wouldn't get plenty of that anyway :D), and Kate Winslet with her double-dipping of course. Mickey Rourke looks like he deserved it for "The Wrestler", and Heath got it of course. So I've got no complaints really.

Re: The 2009 Academy Awards.

I predict that this time the Oscars will NOT rubberstamp the Golden Globes, except Heath Ledger is a likely repeat.

Re: The 2009 Academy Awards.

Slumdog Millionare needs to sweep it all except for......

......Best Actress which MUST go to the incredible Kate Winslet.

She's been due for a loooooooong time.

Re: List of 2009 Academy Awards nominees

Lame. Lame. Lame.

Re: List of 2009 Academy Awards nominees

"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" leads Academy Awards contenders with 13 nominations, among them Best Picture and acting honors for Brad Pitt and Taraji P. Henson, and a directing slot for David Fincher.

"Slumdog Millionaire" comes in second with 10 nominations, including a directing spot for Danny Boyle and two of the three song slots.

The largest blockbuster in years, "The Dark Knight" had eight nominations, but other than Heath Ledger's honor, its scored only in technical categories such as cinematography, visual effects and editing.

Re: List of 2009 Academy Awards nominees

Great thread, thanks for putting that together ..|

I loved Benjamin Button, it should do very well.

Re: List of 2009 Academy Awards nominees

Thanks for the list. Pretty safe and predictable. The Boss didn't get Best Song nod despite winning the Golden Globe in the same category.

The Best Song nominees, except for Peter Gabriel's "Down to Earth", are rather lame. Bruce Springsteen's "Working on a dream" is by far the best song for a motion picture released last year.

Re: 81st Annual Academy Award Nominations

If I got to choose the nominations, it would have gone something like this:

Best Picture: Benjamin Button; Slumdog Millionaire; WALL-E; The Dark Knight; In Bruges

Best Actor: Sean Penn, Milk; Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler; Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon; Josh Brolin, W; Dev Patel, Slumdog Millionaire

Best Actress: Kate Winslet, Revolutionary Road; Meryl Streep, Doubt; Julianne Moore, Blindness; Kate Beckinsale, Nothing But The Truth; Michelle Williams, Wendy and Lucy

Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight; Brad Pitt, Burn After Reading; James Franco, Milk; Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Doubt; Aaron Eckhart, The Dark Knight

Best Supporting Actress: Amy Adams, Doubt; Viola Davis, Doubt; Frances McDormand, Burn After Reading; Rebecca Hall, Vicky Christina Barcelona; Marisa Tomei, The Wrestler

Best Director: Christopher Nolan, The Dark Knight; Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire; David Fincher, Benjamin Button; Gus Van Sant, Milk; Charlie Kauffman, Syndecdoche, NY

Also, I think they should have had 5 nominees for best original song, adding in "I Thought I Lost You" from Bolt and Springsteen's "The Wrestler." Those two seemed like shoo-ins for a nomination and did deserve a nomination.

Re: List of 2009 Academy Awards nominees

Robert Downey, Jr.'s nomination is a joke.

I'll be rooting for Meryl Streep and Viola Davis.

Robert Downey Jr. is a comeback story that Hollywood loves. The film was hillarious, but no Oscar noms, please. Ledger will get his oscar early in the show, then we can turn the channel........

Re: 81st Annual Academy Award Nominations

I think that the increasing numbers of Brits in the academy is what helps good-but-not-great films like Slumdog and the Reader into Best Picture.

The reporting of these nominations here was a disgrace. I had to go online to see what they were because all I heard was the word "brit" 435 times during the news.

And quite how Springsteen's "The Wrestler" didnt get a nomination is beyond me. Was there a better film song last year? Not one I heard.

Re: The 2009 Academy Awards.

I think its an absolute joke that Vicky Christina Barcelona beat out Mamma Mia for Best Comedy/Musical. How MM cannot win in a musical category and against those other pictures is a mystery.

VCB was an original film that took creativity and skill to write and direct.

Mamma Mia was a lazy jukebox musical that could have been made by anyone, such was the creative vacuum it exists in.

Re: The 2009 Academy Awards.

Slumdog
Rourke
Winslet
Ledger
Davis (although Cruz will probably win)

I'm not sure about director yet, but GVS seems better than Boyle.

Re: Academy Awards, Oscar Winners LEAKED!

Damn, just when I started getting excited for Mickey Rourke & Slumdog Millionare. I do hope they take home the gold on oscar night.

Re: Academy Awards, Oscar Winners LEAKED!

The Oscars have tighter security than Fort Knox. There are 'leaks' every year.
