Official 83rd Annual Academy Awards (Oscars) Thread

Re: Official 83rd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

Christopher Nolan getting snubbed for director was the worst one for me. Especially when that dick David O Russell took his place. Although Nolan has been nominated for producer (picture) and original screenplay.

Snubs
Robert Duvall
Sam Rockwell
Danny Boyle 127 Hours
Black Swan original screenplay
127 hours cinematography
Inception film editing
Tron 2 visual effects
Tangled, Despicable Me, Summer Wars animated film

The Tillman Story, Waiting for Superman documentary

Kick Ass, Scott Pilgrim, Never Let Me Go, and Shutter Island recieved 0 nominations.

Oh and The Cow That Wanted To Be A Hamburger got snubbed for short animation. I know that one pissed you off. x

Re: Official 83rd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

Saw James' Today Show interview this morning. I'd forgotten how cute and sweet he is! Had Meridith gigglin' like a school girl!

Re: Official 83rd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

Ugh I wish we could go back to the old days when only five or so films were nominated. It's too much work to see them all now!

Re: Official 83rd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

I very surprised that Chris Nolan lost the directing nom for Inception

Yeah, what the hell is that all about? His Dark Knight was beyond incredible and then he tops that with Inception and they ignore his direction.

Well, I shouldn't be surprised because they didn't give a win to Brokeback Mountain or Avatar. How in hell was that creepy Iraqi war film better than a great blockbuster?

I'm more surprised the film isn't nominated for Film Editing, it's strongest asset. Directing depends too much on getting great performances out of your actors for Inception to be considered.

Re: Official 83rd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

I haven't seen 127 Hours, Rabbit Hole, or Blue Valentine, all of which I want to see very much. I'm very familiar with the David Lindsay-Abaire's play, so I expect great things from Rabbit Hole.

Best Picture: Winter's Bone or The Social Network. I'd opt for Winter's Bone, but it hasn't a chance in hell, I just like pulling for the indie films and this is one is great. Inception and Black Swan are grossly overrated. I generally liked them both, but I don't feel either is deserving. I wouldn't object to The King's Speech at all. It's a very safe choice. True Grit is too safe for its own good. Toy Story 3 is a crowd pleasing nomination. I didn't think it was that great, but I'm not a fan of the series. I'd rather have seen Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 nominated. It deserves it more than most of these nominees. I have no interest in seeing The Fighter. There are things I liked about The Kids are All Right. The script and the performances are all very worthy. The film itself is a bit of a mess though.

Lead Actor: Until I see James Franco's performance, I'll have to go with Colin Firth.

Lead Actress: Every actress nominated is amazing, this is the best group of nominations this year. I absolutely adore Annette Bening, she made that film for me. She was, as always, phenomenal. Portman was as well, and I predict she will win. It isn't really fair to say Bening deserves it just because it's her fourth nomination and she's never won, but I almost think she should. I'm a bit surprised Hilary Swank isn't nominated just to pit the two against each other a third time. This is a very difficult choice.
After the response to Tilda Swinton in I Am Love, I'm surprised she isn't nominated.

Supporting Actor: I love that John Hawkes is nominated and wish him the best of luck!

Supporting Actress: I love both Amy Adams and Melissa Leo, but haven't seen The Fighter. Okay, perhaps I should so that I can decide on this category.

Directing: If Fincher has ever deserved this, it is now. I love the Coens, but True Grit will never be one of their best films. If this award were given for ambition alone, Aronofsky would win, no contest. Good thing it isn't. If Chris Nolan and Danny Boyle were nominated along with them, it would be a powerhouse competition of five of the most beloved directors of their generation. I'm surprised, but glad, that didn't happen, so I'm glad to see Tom Hooper nominated.

Re: Official 83rd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

…A little surprised at Christopher Nolan's exclusion from the directing category.
I very surprised that Chris Nolan lost the directing nom for Inception

No surprise to me! He has to take the blame for cutting all that fantastic soundtrack and visuals down into a mindless kaleidoscope.

Re: Official 83rd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

I would love to see Jacki Weaver win but I doubt she'll be able to beat Melissa Leo. I think everyone else is more familiar with Melissa being a character actress and has earned her dues, whereas Jacki isn't known outside of Australia. Still, an Oscar nom after nearly 40 years in the biz is not bad at all.

Re: Official 83rd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

An excellent showing for Aussies in the acting categories with Kidman, Rush and Weaver!

:D

Re: Official 83rd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

The King's Speech is the kind of movie that the Academy tends to go for. I haven't seen it yet but do want to.

I thought that John Hawkes was good in Winter's Bone. But I don't think his role was big enough for him to win the award. But if Christian Bale and Geoffrey Rush split the votes, then Hawkes could win.

I actually thought that The Fighter was a better movie than The Social Network.

Re: Official 83rd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

Well now that Tom Hooper won the DGA award and The King's Speech won the PGA award, it's looking very positive for The King's Speech! I hope it wins Best Picture, I would hate to see The Social Network win, and David Fincher has always come off as somewhat ungrateful whenever he has won something for this movie. Give it to Tom Hooper I say!

Re: Official 83rd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

Gwyneth Paltrow will perform "Coming Home" from her latest film "Country Strong" on the 83rd Academy Awards telecast.

Original Song nominee A.R. Rahman and Florence Welch, of Florence & the Machine, will perform "If I Rise" from the film "127 Hours." Rahman is nominated for writing the music (Dido and Rollo Armstrong are also nominated for the song's lyric).

Alan Menken, who is nominated for writing the music for "I See the Light" from the animated film "Tangled," will accompany singers Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi on the piano (Glenn Slater is also nominated for the song's lyric).

Randy Newman will perform his nominated song "We Belong Together" from the animated film "Toy Story 3."

Re: Official 83rd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

It sucks that Cher/Diane Warren weren't nominated for Burlesque. To think that another fucking Randy Newman phone-it-in-by-the-numbers-Disney piece of shit song got yet another zillionth nomination is absolutely laughable.

I hope AR Rahman wins.

Re: Official 83rd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

No Diane Warren would have been up for the award, but it would have been wonderful seeing Cher perform it on a world stage like the Oscars.

I'm disappointed TRON did not get a nomination for Original Music Score
