Official 89th Annual Academy Awards (2017 Oscars) Thread

Re: The Oscars

The Oscars 2017 have made the front pages of the world's press, for a cock up that illustrates how even actors can be as human as the rest of us.

Re: The Oscars

Did she win because she is good? Or because there are quotas to fill?

Maybe a bit of both. Last year was Oscars so white.

With that said I heard Fences was amazing. She did the role on Broadway and then she was brought on to do it for the film.

Re: The Oscars

.. a cock up ..

I wonder if they're trying to ignore the fact that one of the 60's sexiest studs is now obviously senile.

Re: The Oscars

I do feel that positive discrimination is so demoralising.

It's not only demoralizing; when based on 'colour', it's insultingly racist (in the true sense of the word).

The problem with so-called 'positive' discrimination for one group of people is that it leads to 'negative' discrimination of another group of people.

That is not true or fair. Rewatch what happened. He knew something was wrong. He was wanting Faye to double check, but she announced it. The real fault lies with whomever gave Warren and Faye the envelope.

Re: The Oscars

So she will never really know if they voted for her because she is talented .. or simply because she was born a certain colour. :(

Honestly, yes. However she was the odds leader in Vegas betting. 1 to 9.

Re: The Oscars

Aw bless, the Oscars, a bunch of out-of-touch luvvies patting themselves on the back.

It's really just another embarrassing N.American ego-fest.

Good is matter of opinion---she has her thing she does---which seems to impress people--- which is cry hysterically, drool, and go all out emotional---she does it in Fences and did the same exact thing in Doubt. But she has studied her craft. I don't get why people are so crazy over Emma Stone or Gosling although he's cute lol---and if Viola Davis is a one trick pony with her acting so is zombie actor Casey Affleck.

Well, if you want to know if she won because she was the best there is a simple way to find out.

And, if after viewing the nominees, you felt she was not, then you would have a more substantial reason to question if she won based on race. Of course it's a possibility. But if you're being rigorous, it would be better to begin with a charitable attitude than to skeptically raise the specter of bias.

But, like me, you don't care for the Oscars in the first place...

Re: Official 89th Annual Academy Awards (Oscars) Thread

Was very glad Moonlight won Best Picture.

Might I ask Why the Oscar 'Spoiler Alert' was moved? Is the Oscars not an Entertainment Event?

It was posted right after Beatty and Dunaway announced Best Picture.
Today I find it "moved." Fine. Moved TO WHERE, please?

Re: Might I ask Why the Oscar 'Spoiler Alert' was moved? Is the Oscars not an Entertainment Event?

I think it was merged with the Oscars thread in Hot Topics.

Re: The Oscars

Lots of insults but no real scandals. Yet.
This wins the award for the most-quickly-obsolete post of the year here, haha...you just had to wait for a couple hours.

Always seems like an advertisement to me.

When I can watch anything from old Soviet films to low-budget horror candy to genuine art flicks, why bother with the Oscars?
My kind of guy! I love adventure in film-watching. Do you mean Soviet animation? That stuff is pretty damned wonderful, in general. My favorite gay movie of all time is, for example, a subtitled film from Cuba - Strawberry and Chocolate. Film festivals, when I can get to them, are a hoot. Anything worthy shows up hundreds, or thousands, of miles from me. That will change remarkably when I'm finally living in Chicago, which is a long process but it is underway.

Our local, pathetic "excuse" for an international film festival is that ONE foreign film will be screened for two or three nights, once per night, then a week later there will be another foreign film that is shown for a couple nights, for about a month in total...I went once, and NEVER AGAIN. I don't remember the film, but when it was over they SHUT IT OFF as the credits (WHICH ARE PART OF THE FILM!) started rolling, to take comments from the audience. Is that any way to run a film festival?

Re: The Oscars

Viola Davis's speech was rather over the top. Sounded as if she was going for a 2018 Oscar right there.
