I'm not surprised by this.. I just hope they come to some sort of agreement soon. We cannot afford to wait very long. We cannot afford for Washington to play politics, the country is in deep trouble rignt now.

One question, has Obama talked to them about this?

has his team discussed changes to this stimulus package?

I agree that there will be Republicans, probably the majority, will NOT support this package.

and I also agree that they may be spending too much political muscle on this, a bit too early, and if they are seeing as stallers, they'll be hurting politically.

But, if Obama wants an easier time in the next four years, he HAS to talk to the Republicans, and at least seem to be willing to negotiate with the 'other side of the aisle'.

I am not sure the Democrats' plan is the best, but I am pretty sure the Republicans' economic policies have sucked terribly.

Having said that, some dissent is part of the course, and a dialog involves people disagreeing, otherwise is just a speech...

I am curious to see how Obama manages that, and what will happen.

Heh, that's happening up here, with the Liberals, Bloq, and NDP apparently not wanting to pass the Conservative budget. They actually have radio ad's saying close to this. "Take the politics out of the economy, Pass the Budget."

What those right-wingers don't seem to understand is that it's the taxes that tend to pay for the good things in life... like those roads they like driving on, or the electricity they enjoy at home, and even several hospitals that they choose to go to(I mean several by a good dozen)

All very interesting.

Obama said he was going to unite the country. We're purple now, not red, not blue. Change the way they do business in DC. Start working together.

But mostly In here I see Obama supporters saying fuck you Republicans. And Obama responding to Republican concerns about the budget, "I won!"

Gee, this couldn't mean Obama won't be delivering on all that unity stuff, too, does it? I'm shocked. Shocked, I tell you, shocked!

Clearly there's truth in what you say, but where is the GOPs plan? Let both parties present their plans and vote on them both. But it is not enough to say, as Boner did, that Obama's plan is “a lot of spending that I just don’t think will work.” Considering the appalling record of the Republicans when it comes to everything, especially the economy, simply saying "I just don't think it will work" isn't good enough.

The GOP presented their economic plan to Obama this past Friday.

Taxes do not pay for electricity - the customers pay for it. Even when a utility is owned by a municipality, it is still the customers who pay for it.

Roads are paid for, in part, by use taxes.

There are, of course, government supported hospitals. Some of the best, however, are run by charities.

This is how it's gonna be for the next 4 years.

The GOP will not support anything the President or Democrats propose. No matter how important.

They talk a lotta crap about bi partisanship and reaching across the aisle, but that's all it is.Just talk.

One can only hope that's the way it will be for 4 years.
The GOP went to Obama to work out something and he said "I won" no deal. Nancy Pelosi said the same thing. So much for bi-partisanship.

Bush reached across the aisle to drunken Teddy Kennedy on his education plan and got a broken arm and a broken leg for it.

I hope the GOP has the balls to stop Obama at every possible opportunity, but they lack the balls.

and bridges that fall, and levees that fail, those are paid by taxes

As far as those levees that failed - do some research.
Virtually every levee in greater New Orleans has its own governing board.
Millions and millions of dollars were given to those board by the federal government. Care to guess how much of that money actually got spent on the levees?

Why are those levees there in the first place? Could it be because people choose to live in dangerous places?

and you still think that New Orleans is the only major city with a Levee system?

or with an outdated infrastructure?

Do you think it's the only one that's in a high risk of major flood, or worse, losing it's water supplies?

What is it going to take?

Two major cities?

three?

How many bridges need to fail to someone do something about it?

Since you are NOT the Army Corps of Engineer, I do not think you can answer that question

Well, they warned about the failure for about two decades

and that's the whole point

infrastructure like that HAS to be maintained as things change, cities grow etc, and it hasn't happened!

Infrastructure problems are best resolved by the cities, counties, and states involved.

and how do your propose they get paid for?

especially with states in dire straits as they are now

and what about infrastructure issues that affect multiple states?

sigh...

why do I even bother....

I am getting an electric bill every month.

I was unaware that my taxes are paying for it. Who do you suggest I send my bill to?

When my grandfather was in the hospital, he got a bill for several thousand dollars, where should we send that bill to?

Send them to BO - he's bailing everybody else out, why not you and grandpa?

Ummmmmmmm they are a STATE. It is their duty to maintain and update their Intrastate Not Interstate.

I am sorry to tell ya but BHO is not the Messiah you think he is. States are in charge of what is fixed and built. (except Federal highways) Elect some people who will be better care-takers of your State. That is what LOCAL CONTROL is about.

well i guess some want a nanny state(nation) to be the overseer of ever problem.

It's the same as when Bush was in -- the Democrats who now beg for "unity" wouldn't budge.

If Obama wants some unity, here's a simple trick: take the plan, lay it out item by item. Toss the items in a hat. Draw them out one by one, giving them to the Republicans and Democrats in even shares, except every now and then give one to the Green, Libertarian, Constitution, and Reform folks just to be inclusive. The folks who get them can write them their way, they can trade back and forth if they want, and when the week is over they all sit down and everybody votes it in.

I know; this is government, and that makes sense.

<sigh>

But you get what I mean. Taxes pay for things that people enjoy everyday.. and scream about when they stop working.

Heh, interesting way of putting it.

Would probably work better then what we've got now.

Now... if only I could find a nice, shallow hat for Harper.. then Canada might be able to do it.

Well, it seems Miss Nancy wants to save money by preventing poor people from procreating. Seems she recognizes that poor babies cost us all too much money. So she wants to spend hundreds of millions for government birth control, under the guise of economic stimulus. Surely sterilization can't be far behind!
