Petition to AAP RE: Infant Male Circumcision

Hi guys,

I received this notice from a group I belong to, and I wanted to pass it on to anybody that may feel likewise. Your help is appreciated!

"The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has convened a task force to evaluate male circumcision and review the AAP's official policy statement. Presently AAP policy says the evidence does not warrant routine infant circumcision. Therefore many state medicaid plans and insurance policies do not cover infant circumcision. I think this is as it should be. In fact I'm disappointed that AAP policy does not roundly condemn the amputation of exquisite pleasure-receptive body parts from healthy normal infants. If their policy becomes any less negative on circumcision, more infants will be needlessly harmed and enacting legislation to give boys the protection that girls now enjoy will be impossible."

PS: to be absolutely clear; the AAP is not creating new “law” on whether parents should or should not have the right to circumcise their infant males, they are simply reassessing their official stand on it as a practice. However, it is vital to note that their stand is what shapes much legal policy!

All male infants should be circumcised because of new reports that it is a major preventative of AIDS/HIV. Medicaid should allow infant circumcision also. In any case parental decisions are necessary. Circumcision is not a mutilation. It is really an enhancement to the beauty of the penis. There is no pain now that infant pain killers are used.

The AAP is supposedly keeping their same stance on their views on infant male circ...they are going to keep their guidelines the same as in 1999 and 2005. Keyword "supposedly".

A new study showed that in several countries in Africa where circumcision is already the norm, more circ guys are infected than uncirc guys. So the african study is flawed. Anyway, condoms are 99.99% effective. Simply cuttin a foreskin off a baby boy will not prevent him from getting HIV poz from a woman. So a cut guy still needs to wear a condom.

Well following that logic, if we cut off their dicks they can't have sex at all.

And if you think a ring of scar tissue is "beauty," I think you're fucked.

Male genital mutilation is morally wrong, no portion of a baby boy's penis should be mutilated, regardless of the reason given behind it. And someone has already decided that female genital mutilation is wrong. Treat baby boys with dignity!

Massachusetts is set to be the first state to ban (excludes when medically necessary) infant male circumcision!! The MGM bill made it's way to Congress on 12 Jan 2010 plus to 12 other states. Hip hip horray. Can only wait & hope.

Which is why we should circumcise every single newborn boy... to stop them from contracting HIV... through sex... which they're having... tons.

Being circumcised doesn't stop you from contracting HIV. It may reduce the risk slightly, but condoms are the most effective way of preventing HIV transmission (besides not having sex of course). So why perform an unnecessary surgery, when instead you could just put on a condom?

Bingo! That was exactly my point. It's like saying, "Oh, well two-day old Billy might get tonsillitis or appendicitis later, so let's just take his tonsils and appendix out now to prevent it." The logic of circumcising infants in order to slightly prevent possible HIV transmission is hugely flawed since they can't have sex. If a grown man wants to make that decision for himself, that's his choice and I'm fine with that.
