In this story I'm writing, a bully torments the main character with titty twisters til his chest is bruised, this culminates in a slapstick scene where his shirt catches on fire but he still refuses to take it off to hide his injuries. My hurdle is I need a realistic scenario where a teenage boy's shirt might catch on fire. At present the fire is a result of the older brother trying to teach him how to deep-fry french fries. Part of my brain says "That's not really likely" but another part says "People burn apartments down with grease fires, a sleeve catching fire is plausible."

I'm running on E cuz I'm moving back to NC this week so I'm not getting much sleep. Anyway I'm not married to the grease fire idea, could be anything boys that age get into, fireworks, playing with matches, I recall several fires I started in my childhood. FYI: do not leave toast in the oven, bread is definitely flammable.

Long shot but has anybody ever had their clothes catch on fire? If so, how? If it was something like working in a steel mill that's not gonna work, this is a 13 year old so it has to be kid hijinks and stupidity.

A poorly rolled joint will flair up pretty easily, won't it?

You mentioned an older brother, so it doesn't have to be a 13yo's joint.

I heart you, that flows seamlessly into the story as the older bro previously introduced weed to him in the spirit of "better here with me than out there with some hooligans."

I liked the grease fire idea cuz it could escalate-- starts with spilling grease before catching fire so there's multiple "you need to take your shirt off" "no i don't!" the key in this scene is him being ashamed of his bruises (and protecting the bully from his brother's wrath) so i'm trying to stretch out his refusal to take the shirt off as much as possible.

Thanks though, that's definitely a workable angle.

Why not just have him doing a Tiktok trend? They’re setting themselves on fire all the time.

:rotflmao: Thankyou for reminding me to keep the overall writing as current as possible. I'm an 80s baby, sometimes when I'm writing this character I forget that someone born just a decade after me could have a vastly different childhood than I did. whatever happens it's definitely gonna be related to social media. you're a genius!

Might help my creative process if you bring me a nice tall glass of gin for lunch. and sit on my lap. :gogirl:

Once the fire is out, they realize the shirt is damaged and they need to get rid of it before mom finds it. Then, it could take a while for the older brother to get the kid to take it off.

Trying to light his farts on fire for Tiktok after having been over to dinner at uncle Vannie's.

This. First thing that came to mind.

Okay then. make it firecracker misfire. Or that he was wearing a poofy shirt and reached over a candle.

Shirts really don't catch on fire now.

It will need an accelerant. Who can accidentally or how can he accidentally spill some on himself?

That's the confusing part, I mean grease fires happen all the time but I agree with the "how?" of it all. If it's scientifically sound, I wanted to write it as he first spilled cooking oil on his shirt which could, theoretically, precipitate a fire? I did start a grease fire once years ago making pancakes, went outside to take 3 puffs from a cig and when I came back inside the bottom of my microwave (which was above the stove) was a crispy cinder and the grease was on fire.

Maybe I need to interview somebody who's started a grease fire cuz I didn't see how mine started.

This is the tiktok trend that is currently killing/burning the most people

You win. The science of grease fires is making my head hurt so I'm gonna go with this. I feel like I owe you some sort of compensation for contributing to the narrative.... Utility closet in 15 minutes?

That works for me. Wear the black fishnet that I like.

If you're willing to bypass the fire completely, there is something you can do. My ex's brother always wore a shirt while swimming because he didn't want anyone to see the bad acne on his back. You could have the brothers go swimming, and your character could refuse to remove his shirt, using the acne cover-up story as the reason.

Or you could create a scenario where this happens
