Olympics 2008

Olympics 2008 latest medal table

EU wins most medals..!

Another interesting statistic from today's Olympic medal table is the position of South Africa.

67th on the list with just one medal.

SA is the 24th largest country in the world and has a population of circa 47 million.

It is also well known as a sporting nation. So why such a pathetic Olympic showing?

Dude, there is much wailing and gnashing of teeth about all that here, especially given the horrific rugby results of the last month.

As Tribi said - cricket and rugby are our big things. There is no money for other sport here. Those swimming medals in '04 were thanks to our athletes having scholarships to Universities with top swimming teams in the US.

Don't even get us started on 2010, because that is going to be an embarrassment for the national side of the highest order.

In fairness, if we're looking at populations, India should have pissed all over everyone...

Man, I almost bawled after the US Men's Indoor Volleyball team won. Seeing Hugh McCutcheon almost lose it made me wanna lose it! It was the perfect ending after everything that happened to him.

I can't believe it's over! I think I get my life back...?

And BBN ^ is quite right to point out how poorly India have performed.

Hockey is an official national sport in India. It's a sport they have excelled in the past. Yet they did not even qualify for the Beijing Olympics:

There must be money available for sports in countries such as South Africa - 1 medal - and India - 3 medals. Presumebly it all goes into bank accounts of corrupt politcians.

Ditto Indonesia with a population of 222 million - 5 medals.

This was mentioned in another thread but did anyone else in the USA think NBC's coverage was quite shitty?

For one Bob Costas is way over dramatic and just plain dumb, the only good commentators are ex olympics and even they can be a bit annoying.

Did anyone else notice how the corporate sponsorship showcased by NBC during these games were way over the top, especially compared to Athens 4 years ago? One thing I did love about NBC was how they would break the commercial and play the Olympic fanfare and show images of the host city/country. Now when they do it you get this huge gold box with corporate sponsors logos. What's the point of showing a clip of the forbidden city or the great wall when you can't even see it because AT&T and Budweiser have to attack you with their logos? NBC really bowed down to the sponsors on this one.
