I was late paying my cell phone bill, so when I went to check voicemail, I got connected to customer service regarding my account status. I have no problem with them using this technique to get customers to bring their accounts up to date, but I had to endure several times being put on hold. The music was not only hideous, but loud enough, I thought it was going to blow my little phone speaker!

I don't understand why companies think we have to be "entertained" while waiting for someone to come back on the line. I would much rather have silence instead of being subjected to what they "think" I will enjoy! ](*,)

I understand the feeling. It seems like they want to put on the worst music possible to torture us with while we're waiting

when i take control of the planet one of the first things i will do is cease all such practices as they annoy the shit out of me too!

well, after i take the usc swim and diving teams as my personal concubines... but i will get to it straight away! ;)

I am not much into conspiracy theories, but it is hard to believe that any major company wants to do anything with you on the phone.

Automatic response menus. Endless waiting + positively hideous music.

If you need to communicate, try the web... phone is kinda out these days...

Even though, you would think that they would be encouraging you the phone. They are a phone company, for Pete's sake...

I hate that stuff also. Its just part of the phone torture that these companies subject us to these days.

So....I'm just going to wait until GL takes control of the planet and hope that he is generous with his concubines.

Hold music is annoying, but at least you know you haven't been cut off. :p

I hate it when I get put on hold and you don't know whether you've been cut off. Should I wait another minute or try calling back? ](*,)

the worst is when you're on hold with your company's corporate office and they're playing the same music as they play in your store for hold music.

I agree. Even if I am late, I just pay the bill online and they e-mail me a confirmation of payment. If they still want to talk with me, let THEM call me. In many cases, you can even make payment arrangements on line. I haven't talked with a customer service person or billing department on the phone in over 2 years. It's all done on line.

It's better than last time I called AT&T, rather than muzak, I was subjected to "Your call is important to us. Please remain on the line and the next available representative will assist you." For 56 minutes. Every 15 seconds.

The music is bad, and so is the outrageous lie they come on with over and over..."Your call is important to us...etc. I usually answer that line with the bluest of blue language, and hope some little spy is on the line listening.

How about a little truth in advertising? "Your call is important to us, but your time is not."

I don't know if it would take a team of physicists, psychologists, or sociologists to determine why "Girl from Ipanema" has become the ultimate hold song. That's just surreal.

I have the perfect way to counter that: music of your own. Loud. Very loud. And don't be afraid of singing along. It's what I do - I usually put on something in the rock/punk area of the music spectrum and sing along. That way I just can't hear their music any more.

The fact that the poor CSR I get after the wait's over has to listen to me singing for ten seconds or so is just collateral damage.

I was trying to find a funny video of someone "on hold", but I coould only find a bunch of really shitty ones that make no sense.

But speaking of "hold on" music; does anybody remember that episode of Suddenly Susan where she was trying to get in contact with the water , the electricity and the phone company and she always got the same "hold on" music (Tijuana Taxi) from all of them. At one point, she was calling them from the office and had the music on loudspeaker.

Yes, I do. I believe it was on a couple of days ago.
Infinitely rerun, that show is..
