On my way to the hospital

Great post. Yes. Those are the more "fancy" ones, rather than the generic ortho bed.
A long-term loan, is also a great idea, we do it here, on a regular basis. As i said before, Letters from his Health-care team, would more than likely "clinch" this fantastic aid for Neil.

Glad he's on the mend and hoping that he can get some help regarding a bed for home. Please continue to pass along our well wishes. Thanks.

Neil,
I hope you have a quick recovery and make the most of the sponge baths.
Thanks for the updates guys

Best wishes to Neil, and thanks DQ for the updates.
Hope you make a speedy recovery and are as comfortable and as well cared for as possible.
Let us know how you're doing when you can :-*:-*

Hurry back Neil, we are falling apart with you!

Unfortunately, not as easy here in Ontario as it is in other areas. If he can't function well at home and does not have extended health insurance for medical equipment or the potential to rent one of these beds, they will either keep him in sub-acute or inpatient rehab until he can function independently at home with assistance from his room-mate.

I'd be very surprised if he was released home directly from the hospital. A period of rehab is necessary.

Thanks for the updates DQ.

Neil, don't hang around in hospital too long. They're unhealthy places at the best of times. If you see a fit male nurse, ask him to discharge you. ;)

Wow he has a much speedier recovery than I would have thought. I know that it takes ages if a knee was replaced, good to know that hips seem to be a bit simpler?

Whether it's a hip or a knee, they'll generally have you out of bed within 24 hours of surgery these days.

Yes out of bed, but not at home. A knee means quite a few weeks of rehab.

We had this type.

Uhm..can Neil at least reply us from his bed? Im curious..with ipad or something?

I talked to Neil a couple times today - once in the morning, briefly, to give him info about discussing for the Bed w/ his docs, then after work to see how he's doing.

He had a shower today - roll into open shower area and hand held - so I think he got shorted on the sponge bath opportunity.

They had him up and moving again - all the way out to the floor receptionist station, then wheel chaired back. Plus getting up to go to the bathroom.

He didn't sleep as well last night as the night before - all those lovely Heavy Duty Drugs (aka Morphine) were gone - back to more normal pain meds.

They are definitely talking about him going HOME Friday or Saturday - he is at ground level, and the back entrance doesn't even have a step up to the entrance. His roommate will be there enough to help him out satisfactorily.

The support staff was working on getting the ancillary "medical" supplies he will need at home arranged - the toilet seat extender for a little more elevated seat, the walker, and such.

He'd love to be able to post here directly but:
1. JUB is blocked at the hospital - I figured it would be - they usually block porn sites.
2. The Internet connection is so slow he couldn't even get an e-mail off to me to copy/paste here.

He was going to try again and see if it is any better, but will likely be after he gets home and has his lap top.

He had a phone call from Sheep today - it was brief because Neil had the support staff there to go over stuff, but he enjoyed the call immensely. If anyone else would like to call him, PM me and I can give you his hospital room number.
Remember, they only work during "visiting" hours, so patients get enough sleep.

I think that covers the bases from today.

I wonder if Neil has a smartphone and could give an update from his bed?

Thanks for the update DQ.
So good to hear that Neil may be going home by the weekend!
