On my way to the hospital

My surgeon saw my new X-rays, then he saw me. Everything is, apparently, fine and dandy. Then he asked to see me walk with the walker. I got out of the wheelchair, grabbed the walker, took 3 steps, and he said, "Well, you're ready to start walking with a cane."

So, when the physio guy shows up tomorrow, I'm sure he'll be pleased to be able to teach me how to use the cane properly.

Getting the X-rays done hurt like hell, though.

Thank you for the update--and a very good update!

Neil.
Great news. Sorry the X-Ray hurt - body positioning?

Your surgeon had his hip replaced shortly before you, right?

Hi, Limenade - great seeing you sticking around these here parts.

Neil.
Great news. Sorry the X-Ray hurt - body positioning?

For the most part, yes. The ones which hurt the most: lying flat on my back with my legs spread slightly and my feet turned in until my toes were touching; being rolled onto my new hip and propped up on a foam wedge placed under my back, keeping my right leg straight, and bending my left leg and tilting it to lie on the table.

The table was not built for comfort.

I'm very tempted to pop a couple of percocets.

My left leg is now shorter than it was a few weeks ago. I thought it was just my imagination, but I would be willing to make bet on it now.

My right leg was shorter than my left. When I stood flat-footed, I tilted to the right. Now, when I stand flat-footed, I'm perpendicular to the floor.

I guess that means I'm a bit shorter, too.

I mentioned this to my surgeon. He assured me that my legs are both the same length. "I measured them very carefully."

I told him that my right leg has always been almost 2 centimetres shorter than the left. He just smiled.

A funny thing happened with the physiotherapist today. I was standing, holding onto the walker, and we went through a few of the exercises he showed me last week, then he showed me a new one to do. He told me to lift my leg sideways, hold for a count of five, and down. I did. And then he asked, "Who was your doctor?"

I told him.

"Okay, then," he said. "We won't do that one anymore."

Apparently my doctor would not have approved of it.

He approves now. He wants me to add that to my repertoire of exercises.

As if I didn't have enough to do already.

Hey Neil, glad to hear you are coming along.
Take small steps in small increments.

Where's Mrs. Whiggins?

Gotta love that show.

And on that note, I must have needs be off to bed.

My physio guy came this afternoon. Despite my reservations and hesitations, I learned to walk with my cane. For the most part, my physio guy walked just behind me and to one side, pressing his fingers against my back just enough to let me know that he was there. I wasn't entirely steady for the first few steps and he had to grab my arm just once when I started to lose my balance. Each step got easier and easier.

We walked from the sofa to the kitchen where we did some more exercises, then back through the livingroom to my bedroom. Finally, we went back to the kitchen and the bathroom where I tried to sit on the regular toilet, but it was a no-go. I'm too tall and the toilet is too short. I couldn't sit on it safely without the worry of popping my new hip out of its socket. I'll have to rent the 'helper' toilet for another month at least.

The walker will be picked up this Friday, but I have access to my landlord's walker which he bought when he broke his leg a few years ago. I may not use it, but it will be here for me if I need it... especially at night when my balance isn't particularly good at the best of times.

How are you sleeping now? Is it any better than it was before?

^ About the same. One or 2 hours, then it's a whole bunch of catnaps. It might change when I can start sleeping on my sides again.

I'm glad you handled the cane without too much issue, Neil.

I hope you're all packed in for the Winter Storm headed our way.

^ Nowhere I need to be for the next few days. I'll just enjoy watching the guy across the street blow his snow.

^ Sorry. 'Snow' is the only thing I can say that he blows with 100% certainty.
