It's already 'dark' in most stores downtown:

attachment.php

Is it happening where you live? Will it happen?

I think it's a very dumb idea! What does electricity have to do with the environment besides energy? Lights are not going off in my area anytime soon. So what now it means that we have to conserve energy to cut out on global warming? Those pesty environmentalists.

I hate brown bags anyway. I am still going to use plastic. No...I don't want my clothes in brown bags either. I want my clothes in a fashionable bag that reads AMERICAN EAGLE or ABERCROMBIE.

It will be occuring all acros Ontario, and every place that sells tobacco has to comply. All I have to say is that I'm glad I no longer work in a place that sells tobacco.

'Going Dark' in this reference doesnt have anything to do with energy, they are just hiding the cigarettes, they wont be in view when customers come into stores.

And regardless, turning off your lights in other instances or conserving energy personally will cut down on the amount of energy used and produced and yes, slightly limit greenhouse gas emissions. But this isn't an environmental issue, it's a health issue. I suppose they believe by not having cigarettes on display, they will limit the number sold, especially to younger people.

And, I'm pretty sure you could live without retail bags that plaster ABERCROMBIE or AMERICAN EAGLE on the side, for environmentally friendly brown bags if that were the case. What's the difference, you still have your clothes, do you need to be a walking advertisement? Plastic bags take forever to decompose. The province of Ontario is also cutting the use of plastic bags, in the LCBO, the store that sells booze, controlled by the province will no longer be using plastic bags for this reason, just those pesty brown bags.

There are some things more important than labels and showing off the amount of money you spent for the same generic clothing with a big bag that has AMERICAN EAGLE plastered on the side.
Anyways, read the actual original post, this wasnt about the environment

And about the original post, I dont think its going to be a huge benefit as we wont see large numbers of people quitting smoking just because the cigarettes are 'going dark', but even if it deters one kid from buying cigarettes its worth it. Smoking kills.

I may had read other's posts and that's why I went ravveling the way I did. I just know they used to do this here in America with the "Lights Out" campaign in April to spread awareness of global warming.

By the way I don't smoke. Smoking is a terrible thing to waste!

It's a drug. Frankly, I disagree with drugs as a whole - I certainly don't think they should be easy or obvious to buy, and anything that takes them more out of the public consciousness is damn fine by me.

In the mean time in this province you can buy alchool (beer and wine) in any corner stores in full diplay. What is next putting laundry detergeant in brown boxes

Yeah. It would be nice if they started doing something about all the booze. It's not easy trying to avoid being run over by a drunk driver.

Fortunately here in Ontario, alcohol can be purchased only in the beer and liquor stores, but I think they should ban all advertising on that as well. . . or at least prohibit the 'party' atmosphere.

^ You are soooooooooo going to have to vote for him now.

What if Hillary had been coming to visit?

Funnily enough, that's prolly why drug pushers work the streets. They don't have huge signboards advertising their wares, but they seem to have no problem being found by regular users.

The Nanny State doing it usual silly thing.

Does anyone actually think tobacco products are an impulse puchase?

It's a good way for them to be seen to be doing something without the risk of it having much effect. They can't afford to lose the revenue from the taxes.

If and when tobacco sales decline as a result of the cover up policy, tobacco taxes will simply be increased to offset the loss in revenue.

The idea behind this policy is to help prevent people from starting to smoke. The stupid thing about it is that there can still be labels affixed to the displays.

That sounds stupid. I don't know. I don't smoke anyway.

Here in the US, we have our cigs behind that counters and you ask the worker to get it for you. You can still see them, but you can't reach them.

They have also banned smoking in all public places and buildings now.
