Opinions About PRIDE

A Pride Parade should be the gay community's day to be ourselves out loud. I refuse to censor myself so the suburbanites can come down and have me entertain them. Pride is for US... not for us to put on a show for THEM.
Very well said! We are facing the sme questions in Perth, Western Australia, at the moment. It seems that when things appear to begin to improve for queert people, many of us back down and are happy to disappear into the homogenous bland, sorry - blend - that is straight suburbia. THe fact is that we are different in more ways than simply our choice of lovers, and Pride is a time to take up that point and make the most of it for our benefit, but also for the broader community's sake indirectly.

And why would anyone want to 'Disneyfy' Pride for the safe consumption of our politics by children! I mean, WTF?! What is wrong with these people? It's a little strange to want to make it about kids, isn't it? It is still our Queer Adult Sexually Aware Pride we're protesting for, isn't it???

>>>I think it in nature isn't kid friendly. I don't think anyone that isn't of legal age should be pressured into any sexual decisions which includes decisions on their sexuality.

My parents took me to the Sakura Festival (that's the Japanese cherry blossom festival) when I was a kid, and I did things like try on a kimono and eat with chopsticks. Were they pressuring me to become Japanese?

I don’t think they want to stick out to much. I don’t know how it works, but not including 2009, none of us was on the board. The members of the board then did not do/keep paper work that the board is required to have by state, county and city law. It is thought if the IRS audited the non profit that the non profit would be shut down. On top of that some of these people are well known around here. I think there may be some personal embarrassment if the non profit gets pegged with anything while they serve on the board of it.

We have a winner!
Any time a NFP outfit isn't doing its paperwork properly, it keeps its head down.

A bit of advice: if there's ever an audit, there will still be questions about those years; for tidiness' sake, it wouldn't be a bad idea at all for the board to take note that the paperwork of the past has been "found" to be in disarray, and to direct someone to attend to it better in the future. If there were any papers or statements that should have been filed but weren't, someone ought to get with the appropriate officials and figure out what needs to be done to cover that -- quietly, of course.

As for the Portland Pink Pistols keep in mind this is planning for August, 7th 2010. If you or the Portland Pink Pistols wanted in, there is time to organize on your end while we do the same.

To be honest though I don’t know how the others feel about guns, but I know I would take issue if they didn’t allow your group a booth. Anyways I think different ideas being shown is a great thing for PRIDE events.

There are at least three PPP people down that direction. Just for fun I'll raise the matter -- since we were in such disarray that we didn't do Portland Pride last year, it will be fun to see what happens. :D

I do want to say though that our event really only gets a couple 10 to 13 year olds. And about a dozen 16 to 20 year olds. If they got anything I am sure it would be a gag gift and all would get something. Also even if the board said okay to a drag show for kids there would be a good chance it still wouldn’t happen if the ones that asked for it didn’t show up on the day of PRIDE. Even vendors that pay to attend don’t show up quite a bit.

Oh, gag gifts would be great! Gag prizes, too -- like, "Looks most like Sarah Palin" with a bit later an award for "Looks most like Tina Fey"...

Just because they want to fill the stage with pros doesn't mean they can't still have the drag event -- just do it in a tent like it was a giant booth. Set it up so anyone at all can stop by and "play dress up"... which, come to think of it, might be a better Pride event in terms of PR anyway, by letting people who show up participate in a spur-of-the-moment way.

1) It is being done quitetly, but is is really messed up so it is going to take a while.

2) That would be cool to see a new group there. At this point though I may be quitting the board. I am tired of the politics and I am sure I am being "used". I have a feeling when he sees I am not the shy person he thinks I am there will be more problem and I am not going to put up with it.

3) That is the way I saw it as well. The Problem is the current President wants 100% control of entertainment, so there is a huge fight with that. I wont get into details, but if she lasts til PRIDE I will be suprised.

Take the president job.

'Hire' me as your advisor -- you know, like a personal Karl Rove. :p  :-<

If they offered me the presidents title I would take it, but the world doesn't need another Karl Rove. Imitation or not.:D

A bunch of prissy little twits, which is what it seems your board is made up of, need a Rove -- one just as rude and nasty, just telling the truth.

Or maybe just a Jesse Ventura. :D
