So I was going through the steps to turn my Ubuntu into Mac OS X essentially, and I ran into a snag with the AWN manager. The instructions called for me to do some command line stuff blah blah, but that didn't work. So I went into Synaptic and got awn manager there. But it refused to open.

So then I just decided to restart my computer and I broke my ubuntu. It got the White Screen of Death, minus the words. So I am now reinstalling ubutnu as we speak (through WUBI) and I am gonna try over again.

So tell me, where did I go wrong? http://maketecheasier.com/turn-your-ubuntu-hardy-to-mac-osx-leopard/2008/07/23/

Running into the same problem. When I type in

sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator-trunk awn-manager-trunk awn-extras-applets-trunk

it says: kevin@kevin-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator-trunk awn-manager-trunk awn-extras-applets-trunk
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package avant-window-navigator-trunk

and I can't open awn-manager. the screen reacts for a second and then nothing.

i got awn manager open. but now it wont even see my elegant glass theme. and it is missing stacks in the leopard dock. its because it couldnt download avant navigator trunk. i am convinced.

post your repository list...

Davy means go to Places/Computer/File System/etc/apt

Find the sources.list file there. Open it with a text editor (gedit). Copy the contents of that file and paste them here.

...and your hardware config.

From the shell, type:

Code:
sudo lshw

Enter your password. Copy the output and paste it here.

This thread is clear evidence to me why Linux isn't ready for the masses just yet. :-)

Gotta agree with Orionfyre. The tutorial was not clear worded, and Orion actually helped me to amend some of his cmd line instructions to make them actually work. I don't find Ubuntu very hard besides the fact I still don't understand why it isn't simple to just go to a website, download some software, and install it. I just find it a hassle to have to open synaptic. but whatever. i kinda figured out how to do it in a terminal.

Is Linux ready for THE MASSES? Not particularly. Is it ready for the user is proficient with computers? absolutely.

That's exactly what I meant.

My Dad calls me all the time with computer problems - he's a tinkerer, and loves installing themes and screensavers and other crap. If I had to talk him through half of the discussion below, like command line instructions and repository lists, it'd be easier for me to drive the three hours to his house and fix it myself.

^yeah, I am using both too. I keep running into problems with Ubuntu that keep pissing me off.

1) Ubuntu=Free; Xp=Not
2) Community supported software and updates= free; Xp= make me laugh
3) No need for an antivirus, just a simple firewall; Xp= sure if you want a rootkit
4) Ubuntu= Very easy to use; Xp=ok it gets that one

Did I ever say those were the problems? No

Does it matter if Ubuntu is free? No, I don't give a shit if it is free, it isn't complete. And as for XP. I have shunned XP completely. The only way I touch XP is at school and even then, not necessary.

Yeah, I do too with windows, BSOD or driver errors. My hardware Fucks up. You name it.
Thats why you go Vista. No BSOD, driver errors are inevitable. Your hardware problems are with the manufacturers, not with the operating system.

I'd rather have driver errors than no support whatsoever which you run into in Ubuntu. Not to mention, installing a program is a nightmare. Never get it from the website, they are useless. You are at the mercy of Synaptic. But I have found the easiest way now is just using the terminal. This has pretty much solved my real problem with Ubuntu for myself.

My biggest problem now is the screen resolution. It hurts my eyes to stare at Ubuntu for too long. I have screwed around with the screen resolution to no end.

Anyway, Ubuntu in my opinion is a still a hobbyist OS. Very few people actually use it exclusively, but that will grow with the Wine program. Most people go into Ubuntu to play with it and see what else you can do with it.

It does matter a lot, and what do you mean it's not complete?

Yeah my hardware problems is because windows is being forced on pc's, and like with the whole phoenix bios which allows you to only install windows on that PC.
So the hardware problem is Microsoft's problem for being bitches (Monopoly much assholes? Mac has like 12% share I think). Installing on Ubuntu is easy, apt-get\synaptic\of the synaptic add remove\or compile the program. The screen resolution can be changed easily, what are your screen's dimensions? Why would any one want to use wine? Linux free applications own!! MSN for example has a shit load of free awesome replacements: Kmess, Amsn, Gaim you name it.

it isnt ready for all consumers. we may know about all the tech gossip and news and how to problem solve, but for the majority, they still are completely unknowing of how to take care of their computer properly. one would use this arguement in favor of Ubuntu, but what happens when they run into a weird problem and no body in the immediate vicinity, including Geek Squad can help? They wouldn't wouldn't think to go on some support forum, that by the way is so weirdly set up, to seek help.

Again, just go Mac if you don't want to deal with viruses. But then again, it's the calm before the storm on the Mac virus front.

And no, it doesn't matter that Ubuntu is free. People are willing to pay if they know they will get a good experience out of something, and a garauntee that there will be support if they have a problem. Thats why capitalism works.
