Out of The Mist

Hopefully so............we're all sitting on pins and needles, Chaz. Just enough time for you to take a breath and then.....back to the keyboard. What a chapter, whew.

“Out of The Mist”

Chapter 140 of ? …

Dan:

Sunday evening/night was spent talking more about “The Plan”. Gary and Cathy shared more details about their ordeal under duress. There was a lot of curiosity. They willingly answered all of our questions. We were also encouraged to call Cathy “Cat”.

Around 7pm we ordered Spartan Pizza to be delivered, along with more beer to shore up our stock. We called it quits around 9:30, or 10.

Had it not been for the alcohol, which everyone was taking light, I doubt anyone would have gotten any sleep. The level of excitement, for what Monday would bring, had adrenaline levels pumped.

The mice began scurrying around 5am. Dave and Ollie put together breakfast of homemade waffles, eggs, and sausage. Gary, “Cat” and I left for their place a little before 7, and were back shortly before 8. It was time to put it all in motion.

Gary and “Cat” took the van to the hospital. Arie had been alerted they were on the way, and reaffirmed they would be under unobtrusive watch until they made it out of town.

The rest of us anxiously waited for half an hour.

The boys took the Jeep out to the “Quik Mart” along the highway, where Gary and “Cat” would stop to top off the van's tank. And, as Arie had instructed, for whatever reason, I walked up to his mother-in-law's, Mrs. Neumann's, to meet him.

When I topped the hill, just a bit short of breath, there was Arie standing next to Elsa's Bentley.

“Are you serious?”, I gasped.

“Yeah! Get in!”, Arie beamed.

“I was expecting your unmarked cruiser.”, I admitted, as I sank my hefty butt into buttery smooth, baby skin soft, aromatic leather. “Isn't this going to stand out a bit much?”

Arie explained that his plain clothed squad was SO plain that anyone could spot it from miles away. Of course, the Bentley would catch their eye, too, but they would never connect it to law enforcement. It was like hiding in non plain sight.

“Aren't we going to need the radio and such?”, I wondered.

Arie informed me that the radio was passe. Anyone with a cheap scanner could listen into the police frequencies. Today it was all about Bluetooth and Wifi. And, the Bentley was a hot spot of its own.

“What if we need to scoot instead of glide?”, I asked.

“Trust me.”, Arie grinned. “This puppy can run circles around 98% of all the vehicles on the road, and that includes my cruiser. As stately as it might be, Bentley was born to race! Now buckle up, grab the laptop out of the glove box, and let's get the show on the road! I need to blow some carbon out of this V12! Elsa doesn't drive it as much as it needs to be driven.”

“She's still driving at 90yr old?” (I had not taken notice, nor realized.)

“Oh, heck, yes!”, Arie chuckled. “She's one tough bird! However, though she does tend to have a lead foot, she doesn't drive it nearly as far, nor as often, to keep it happy. We're actually doing her a favor by taking it for a run.”

Wow! I was going to be liking this more than I ever thought I would! I found myself as excited as the wide-eyed kid I used to be, being allowed to go on a great adventure. I was just hoping everything would go well.

Before we left Elsa's driveway, Arie set up a conference call with Dave in the Jeep, Gary in the van, and us. He told everyone to keep the line open, and stay in touch. We were looking at about a 2hr trip.

“Isn't that gong to cost a small fortune?”, I whispered, so the others wouldn't hear.

Arie smiled, and softly murmured, “Elsa has it covered.”

I thought he was about to pat my knee, but instead he shifted the Bentley into drive, and glided us down the hill, heading for the highway.

I was floating, and couldn't hear the engine, as hard as I tired.

Dave reported that the van had arrived at the “Quik Mart”, and he was pulling out. The idea was to keep considerable space between all of us. Everyone had Pete and Mark's address programmed into their GPS.

“Cat” piped up that Rafe was mildly sedated, and riding comfortably, strapped down on his hospital bed, swathed in comfy blankets.

For a moment I envied him, until the vision of his bruises flashed across my mind.

We heard Ry ask if he could climb out from under his blanket, and over the back of the Jeep's back seat, to snuggle up to Frank.

Ollie, riding “shot gun”, chuckled his approval, emploring those two to keep their clothes on.

Gary and “Cat” had pulled out, a few minutes before we hit the highway, passing the “Quik Mart”. Since we were all connected, we didn't have to be in sight of each other.

We would be accessing the Interstate for most of our ride, before exiting onto picturesque New England rural roads. Arie had, needlessly, encouraged everyone to be situationally aware, on alert. We were undeniably maximally stoked, eagle-eyed, and I was already hoping for a “Rest Area” sign.

Aging does have it's downsides! (DOH!)

And the trip has begun!

Riding in the Bentley? I'll say they're made for racing - BIG Arse (it's British, after all) motor and it definitely knows how to get out of its own way.

Loving the journey - of course, that's where the Joy is!

That triggered a memory - this song, this artist, and all of his work - might not quite be the tempo of your story, but somehow I think it fits.

“Out of The Mist”

Chapter 141 of ? …

Dave:

If you've ever driven in New England you'll know what I'm talking about.

Arie had instructed us to space out with a mile between us, and set our cruise controls at the posted Interstate speed limit of 70mph. That meant, compared to the rest of the traffic, we were just loping along, and belonged in the “slow” lane on the right. Even the trucks were passing us, nudging us further right with their back draft.

“Relax and let it happen.”, Arie's voice encouraged, interrupting the tunes blaring from the Jeep's surround sound.

I was wondering, “Let what happen?”

I glanced in the mirror to see Frank in the back seat, grinning from ear to ear. I couldn't see Ry. I could only imagine what was happening back there!

Dan:

Arie had been watching his mirrors, and muttered, “Here they come. At least I think it's them.”

“Don't look!”, he admonished, as I was just about to swivel around.

The Ford van swooped past us, then pulled over into our lane, and slowed down, likely in sight of Gary and “Cat”.

Arie sped up a bit to get closer to it. It's navy blue paint looked like a quick spray job.

“Can you get it's plates?”, Arie asked. “Go to the second bookmark in “favorites”, and type them in.”

In any other car I might have had some trouble accurately typing on the laptop. In the Bentley, though, I may as well have been sitting at a desk.

The Connecticut plates came up as having been reported stolen 4 days ago.

“This is amazing! What else can I find out?”

“You really don't want to know.”, Arie chuckled, as he dropped the Bentley back to distance, and resumed the cruise control.

The van was holding at 70, too, which was just one more indication that it was the one we'd been hoping to draw out.

Arie had put the conference call on hold, and directed the Bluetooth to call another number.

“Bob!”, Arie boomed. “How the Hell are you, and your gorgeous wife Peggy?”

“We're fine, Arie, you swarthy son of a bitch! And, never get anywhere near my wife without Pam with you! Now, since you never call, or send me presents, not even a card, I know you want something! What's up, Buddy?”

“I'm bringing you a present, ass hole!”

“Spill it!”

It turned out that Bob was the police chief of Pennupskat, New Hampshire, a lazy little town, off the Interstate, along our way to Pete and Mark's. After our exit, we'd have about 10mi of two lane rural road before we drove into that picturesque burg.

Arie gave Bob a quick brief of what was going on, described the Jeep, our van, and us, and the suspect van in front of us.

“Give me a guess at your timeline.”, Bob returned. “I think I can wrangle up a little welcoming committee.”

“That would be awesome, and I hope we're not interrupting your nap!”, Arie laughed.

“Fuck you!”, Bob snarked back. “Let me know when you're getting close!”

“A friend of yours?”, I chuckled.

“No more than you are, you big bitch!”

I gave Arie a light punch on his shoulder.

“Ow!, Bruiser! Don't be making me swerve into the ditch!”

Arie reestablished contact with Dave and Gary, to fill them in on what might be waiting ahead, and to let Gary know he had a shadow.

Arie reestablished contact with Dave and Gary, to fill them in on what might be waiting ahead, and to let Gary know he had a shadow.

We're all shadowing and waiting for the next part of this great story!

The cheese was set and the trap tension is tightening.

Gonna be a high time in the town tonight!

Get those bastards.

“Out of The Mist”

Chapter 142 of ? …

Ollie:

Dave pulled the Jeep into the empty space on the passenger side of the van. Gary had parked under a tree, to gain some shade, in the back of the McDonald's parking lot. The side cargo and back doors had been flung open. We could see Cat beside Rafe's hospital bed, obviously checking on how he was doing. All of us wanted to see him, too.

“Well! THAT was interesting!”, Dave enthused as he exited the Jeep.

Gary had come around the back of the van just in time to hear that.

“What happened?”, he wanted to know.

“We'll tell you when Arie and Dan get here. Then they can add their side, and we won't all have to repeat ourselves. Until then, who's hungry? I'm suddenly starving.”, Dave smiled.

First things first, we all crowded around the van trying to get a glimpse of Rafe. Cat explained he had just woken up from his “little nap”, and was still a bit groggy. We could talk to him, but we should stay as calm as we could. Then she motioned for me to crawl in.

“Hey, Buddy! How are you doing?”, I gently asked, taking his hand in both of mine.

His eyes were a bit unfocused as he looked at me, possibly trying to figure out who I was. Then a big smile spread across his face. His grip intensified.

“Ollie! So good to see You!”, he beamed.

He wanted to know where we were, and what was going on. I explained we had kidnapped him so we could get some “Mickey D's”.

He wanted three cheese burgers, and a chocolate shake. I glanced at Cat, and she nodded in the affirmative, while slowly raising the head of his bed, putting him in a sitting position.

“Do you want fries with that?”, Ry piped up, over my shoulder.

Rafe chuckled, then grimaced. “Please don't make my laugh, Man. And, no, no fries. I need to watch my figure!”

A burgundy Bentley silently slipped into the space across from the back of the van. It caught all of our attention, including Rafe's

“What a sweet ride!”, Frank exclaimed.

All of our mouths dropped further open, as Arie and Dan emerged.

“Are you shitting me?”, Dave exploded.

Arie and Dan had “Cheshire Cat” grins plastered across their faces.

“Elsa's!”, was all Arie had to say in explanation, “And, lunch is on her!”

Arie, Dave, Frank, and Ryan took everyone's orders, then headed inside for take out. We'd be eating in the parking lot, to keep Rafe company, and fill him in on what was really happening, and what had just happened.

Dan was dreamily staring at the Bentley. “I think I'm in Love! I might have to get one of those.”, he opined.

“Right now, all I want is cheese burgers!”, Rafe exclaimed.

We all chuckled.

“Please! Don't make me laugh!”, he implored.

It's good to see Rafe is awake and hungry. They're right out in the open and I assume this is part of Arie's plan. I'm sure they're being watched. I hope they get to eat before the attempted takeover happens. Can't fight on an empty stomach... Good chapter, Chaz.

“Out of The Mist”

Chapter 143 of ? …

Ollie:

The atmosphere in the parking lot was nearly “Festive”. Maybe that was a way for us to expend the adrenaline that the recent events had pumped up. It was as though the previous excitement was seeking a lightning rod, looking to “go to ground”.

Arie, Dave, Frank, and Ryan, quickly returned with “the goodies”. The only one that didn't immediately tear into their respective bags was Cat, who took the time to help Rafe make contact with his beloved cheese burgers.

“That certainly got my blood going.”, Gary ventured. “I was surprised this van had that much “oomph” when I floored it to “leap frog” you guys, Dave.”

“Yeah! When I saw that big red mail box, that Bob had told us about, and following his instructions to slow down so you could pass me, I was surprised, too, when you shot around us like that!”

“Thank goodness that Bob had stopped the south bound traffic to assure I had the room to get around you. That was a slick move. Did you pass that cruiser that was holding everyone else up?”, Gary asked.

“Not quite.”, Dave answered. “Just as Bob had ordered, I came to a complete stop in our north bound lane, just as I got past that flashing SUV. And, I was kinda glad when I got there. Riding the center line, so that other van couldn't get past us was a bit unnerving.”

Dan piped up. “Arie was riding the center line, too, with the flashers on, holding back traffic, right after that squad, with lights flashing, and siren blaring, shot out of the trees in front of us. Good thing Bob had warned us, or we might have run smack into it.”

As the various lines of the overall story unfolded, it appeared that Bob was a master tactician. He effortlessly melded his limited resources with our positions, holding the suspect van in a pocket, and maneuvering it where he wanted it to go. He seemed to know that the “bad guys” would choose to run, rather than pull over.

I recalled Dave telling the rest of us in the Jeep to “get down”, as he spotted the cruiser holding up south bound traffic, and stood on the brakes just past it. He didn't know if the fleeing van behind us, that he'd expertly prevented from passing us, would rear end us, or what.

Thankfully, it swerved into the road to the right. After the chasing squad followed it, the one beside us immediately followed pursuit down that street.

“And, then, we followed you here for cheese burgers!”, I concluded.

“Stop making me laugh!”, came from a chuckling, grimacing, Rafe.

“Just so y'all know ...”, Arie offered, “That street led to a developing subdivision. The streets, and utilities, had been laid in, but housing construction hadn't started, yet. With our help, Bob sent that van down into a cul de sac, away from anyone that might have been inadvertently put in danger. I applaud his insight, and initiative. But, please, when you meet him, don't tell him that.”

“So … what happened? Did they get them?”, Frank wondered.

“I don't know.”, Arie admitted. “We'll find out when Bob gets here.”

“He's going to meet us?”, Ryan wondered.

“Who do you think told us to stop here?”, Arie smiled.

What a way to build it.......

But I keep thinking:

Quite a switcheroo, Chaz. You had us believing the chase was still on. At least I did... Now just to wait for Bob to show and give us the lowdown. I'm sure they (the goons) were in contact with Paddy, but they haven't the slightest idea where our boys are going. Exciting as usual, thanks, Chaz.

Chaz,
You snuck a couple of chapters in on me as we headed into the weekend!

Still want the report back from Bob on "dear Uncle Paddy" and scum ...

THANKS for the installments!

“Out of The Mist”

Chapter 144 of ? …

Ollie:

The 1995 turquoise Corvette caught all of our attention as it glided into the spot beside Elsa's burgundy Bentley. The guy that untangled himself from it's interior was a 6'4” scarecrow who probably weighed 150lb, fully dressed, and soaking wet. How he would ever get into, or out of, that car, when it's top was up, befuddled all of us staring at him.

I swear every mouth within sight had stopped chewing tasty cheese burgers, munching delicious salty fries, sucking icy Coke through straws, or slurping sugary sweet milk shakes, and whatever else Mickey D's could conjure up.

“Arie, you little bull! Great to see you!”, Bob shouted, grabbing Arie in a bear hug. The top of Arie's head was buried in the middle of Bob's towering scrawny chest. Bob's gangley arms could have encircled Arie twice.

“Let me go, you slinky oaf!”, Arie scoffed, yet hugging back. “You're going to get me excited, and then we'd have too much to explain to our wives!”

Bob ruffled Arie's hair, while backing off. “Who's going to tell?”

Arie made a sweeping gesture, encompassing all of us grinning from ear to ear. “We have witnesses, Buddy!”, Arie laughed.

“Aw, yeah! Witnesses! When you need them they aren't there. And, when you don't, well …”, Bob frowned, then chuckled.

Bob made it a point to shake all of our hands as Arie introduced us. He took special care with Rafe. There was a marked change in his jovial mood. I swear there might have been tears in his pale blue eyes as he knelt beside Rafe's bed.

“I am pleased to meet you, son, and am so sorry to see what has happened to you. I can assure you that I will bring about all that is within my power to see that justice will be done.”, Bob murmured, gently hold Rafe's hand, and lightly patting his shoulder.

“Tell us what happened.”, Arie urged.

With all of us crowded around the van, Bob folded himself into an “Indian” seated position, on the floor beside Rafe, looking all of us in our eyes, as he became more solemn, and serious.

“I want to thank all of you for what you helped us accomplish today.”, he began. “If it weren't for what you were willing to do, none of this would have happened as well as it did. We have manged to take some very bad guys out of circulation.”

I noted that Ryan was especially all ears, and wide eyed, closely following each of Bob's words.

“I was waiting, not in this car, where the street you helped send them down ran out. The driver slewed the van sideways to a tire smoking halt. We were expecting them to try to run, and that's exactly what they did. However, with the two squads behind them, and with me in front, there was nowhere for them to go.”

“Unfortunately”, Bob continued, “One of them decided to pull a weapon. He did not survive that ill thought move.”

Bob took a moment to look down, take a deep breath, then looked up at all of us again. None of us had any doubt that it was Bob who'd taken that fatal shot. The personal remorse was evident in the look of his eyes.

He squared his lanky shoulders to continue.

“The driver's passengers took the hint, and knelt on the pavement, hands behind their heads, moments after the body sprawled on the ground. We got all three of them. One dead. Two in my jail.”

“Only three?”, Arie piped up, very concerned. “I was expecting at least five!”

“Nope! Just the three.”, Bob confirmed. “There were supposed to be two more?”

“Yeah!”, Arie replied. “Given what we saw on the hospital parking lot cameras, I was expecting two more.”

“There were only three in that van, Buddy.”, Bob affirmed.

That left all of us feeling vulnerable, and looking all around, especially Ryan.

SCARY! We can't have anyone out there. Obviously there is much more work to do. Perhaps Bob will be able to obtain vital information from the living two. Enough to put the entire operation out of business. However, Paddy probably has much more up his sleeve and we can anticipate more tense moments. At least the guys are safe for now, hopefully. Thanks, Chaz.
