Out of The Mist

When we catch up with Paddy, I want him first. I'm going to pour liquid nitrogen over his knees and then tap them with a hammer, so he can watch the frozen shards scatter all over the room. Then we'll use the shards to catch crab and make him eat it.

Oh, the legs that fall off below the knees? Those go in a big tank we'll fill with more crabs so he can sit and watch them eat his own flesh -- then we'll feed him and his goons those crabs, too.

When the crabs are all gone, I'll think of something else to do.

We can hope there are Coasties in the Mist just waiting for their arrival.

“Out of The Mist”

Chapter 155 of ? …

Ollie:

I was frozen in my tracks, trying to make some sense of what was confronting me. Why did Tino have his hands on his head, and who the fuck were these guys we had on board?

What could I do? What SHOULD I do? There was an obvious threat, but I didn't know what it was, or how to respond to it.

“Andy” piped up. “Relax, Ollie, this isn't what you might think. We don't mean any harm here. “Isaac”, how about you take Tino up top, and let him show you what this boat is equipped to really do. And, Ollie, would you please join me, and “Chuck” below decks for a chat?”

What choices did we really have?

“Catch's” proximity detector began chirping. We all saw the Coasties' patrol boat pulling up on us, then swerving away, tooting it's horn, the visible guys waving at us.

All of us waved back, me and Tino more reluctantly.

“Friends of yours?”, “Chuck” asked.

“Yeah! You could say that.”, I confirmed, hoping to make a point with our captors.

“Excellent!”, he replied. “They're our friends, too. Don't look so surprised.”

What the Hell was going on here?

As “Isaac” was herding Tino up top, and I was joining “Chuck” and “Andy” below, the two of us exchanged a glance of concern, yet had no choice but to go on.

“Ollie”, Andy spoke up. “Before we sit down at the galley table, here, I think all of us could use a beer. And, I do mean five. Chuck will deliver Isaac's, and Tino's, up top.”

Though the guns at their waists were evident, no one had reached for one. The apparent force was merely a suggestion.

I began to relax as I retrieved the cold ones, popping them open, setting three around the table, and handing Chuck the other two.

Andy was smiling. “Have a seat, Buddy! We'll wait 'til Chuck gets back, in a few moments.”

When Chuck returned he didn't take the seat that would hem me in between them. Instead, they left me outboard, right next to the steps up to the fantail. I got the impression I was free to flee, if I wished. However, something about them told me stay where I was. What the Hell was going on here?

“Thanks for the beer, and giving us a few moments to talk to you, Ollie”, Chuck began.

“I do apologize for our obvious intimidation, but it's been necessary. All we really want to do is talk to you, and this was the best way to do that, privately, out here beyond any other observance.”

He had my attention, and I relaxed my concern for Tino with Isaac.

The following conversation with Chuck and Andy was mind blowing.

They let me know, in no uncertain terms, that they knew everything about me, my family, my friends, my relation with Dave, who everyone was, including Tino, how we'd formed up together, and what we'd been up to.

They also inferred that they worked for a certain agency, that they called “The Company”.

My mind was spinning.

They knew I had one more year to go at Duke, in order to get my undergraduate degree in oceanography, and marine biology. And, they even suggested it might be better for me to consider transferring to a New Englnad area univeristy, B.U., Harvard, Yale, M.I.T., any of those I might choose. They had ways of helping me do that.

And, if I took them up on their offer, they were sure “The Company” would be interested in hiring me, even if I wanted to go into post-grad studies.

They said they were impressed with what my friends, and I, had managed to detect, and uncover, exposing Paddy Lafferty's criminal operations.

However, they also said that they had Paddy in a useful position, being able to use his operations to their advantage, but weren't going to say anything further about that.

They knew about Ryan, Paddy's apparent vendetta, and Rafe's unfortunately getting caught up in that. And, they assured me that while they were “chatting” with me, Paddy, and his brother-in-law, Ryan's dad, were having a “discussion” with some of their fellow agents … um … co-workers.

From here on out, Paddy would no longer be a threat. Period.

I was stunned!

Tino popped his head into the cabin, all smiles. “Ollie! Can I get two more beers for Isaac and me?”

I had NO idea what those two had been up to, or why they were good buddies all of a sudden.

“Let's all grab another brew, and get down to some serious fishing!”, Andy declared.

What an Awesome day this turned out to be!

I finally nosed “Catch” back into her slip. Tino expertly tied us off. The fish were filleted, wrapped, and portioned out among our three new amigos, who gave us hugs, and really big tips, before heading to their SUV.

“What just happened, and who were those guys?”, I asked Tino.

“I'm not sure, but I wouldn't mind seeing them again.”, Tino answered, as we were hosing “Catch” down, and getting ready for tomorrow.

Hmmm … I was thinking. Chuck, Isaac, and Andy?

I like the name alphabet there, Chaz.

Good chapter -you certainly grabbed us all by the short hairs, you devil.

Now it's our turn to get you by yours - maybe a french braid?!

I read it again.

Now I have to wonder just what kind of cover the other "employees" have that they can, er, "talk" with Paddy, and Ryan's dad, in a, shall we say persuasive fashion!

As with the others, Chaz, I missed that boat. With so many fearful happenings recently we all assumed the worst. However, the mystery is still with us and I can't imagine our guys will retire calmly to a life of bliss... just saying. At lease the stress and pressure seems to be off for a while. Thanks for an interesting and relieving chapter.

“Out of The Mist”

Chapter 156 of ? …

Sean:

Mary had served us lunch in Paddy's study, just like any other day. We were talking about some recent property acquisitions, and what terms we might offer “G” to open another “Polly's” at Paddy's marina.

Paddy surprised me when he said he'd like to lessen his usual “gouge”, um … percentage of the take, in a possible deal with “G”. He noted my raised eyebrows.

“Don't look so surprised, Bro. I happen to like, and admire the guy. I understand all the work he's put into building what he has, and I think I've become addicted to his food. You should go up there and check it out some time. Maybe I've mellowed a bit as I've aged, but we also have so much more than anyone really needs. He has a young family, and is supporting his parents, too. His staff adores him. I would like to see him succeed. Let's make this deal a fair one.”, Paddy smiled.

I nearly slid out of my chair! Who was this guy I was lunching with?

There was a knock at the door. “WHAT?!”, Paddy growled!

The old grouch I knew so well was back in a flash.

Collin opened the door. “Excuse me, sir. There are two ...”

“Thank you, Collin. That will be all for now.”, bluntly ordered the tall, slim, read head, that strode past Collin, followed by a slightly shorter, more bulky, guy.

Collin nearly bowed, as he slunk away, gently closing the door behind him.

That wasn't like Collin at all. The hairs on the back of my neck not only stood up, but practically jumped out of my skin.

“Paddy, Sean, I'm F.B.I. Special Agent Brad McCarthy.” he introduced himself, flashing his credentials. “This is Agent Coleson.”

I noticed that McCarthy didn't say F.B.I. when introducing Coleson, nor did Coleson show any identification.

“Please remain as you are. We're here to have a little discussion with you.”

McCarthy was very authoritative. No pleasantries about him. He was all stern business. He wasted no time getting down to the essentials of their visit. Instead of sliding out of my chair, I was riveted in place for the next 33min., as was Paddy.

McCarthy and Coleson took turns laying out everything they knew about Paddy's operations. I couldn't have been more thorough myself. They let it be known, in no uncertain terms, that they had us to rights, and could pummel us whenever they wished.

However, if we co-operated with their “requests”, basically controlling parts of our operations when they saw fit to accomplish their own ends, we would not be headed for a federal prison, with no hopes of ever getting out.

The last point they brought up surprised me. It was from McCarthy.

“Paddy, your nephew Ryan happens to be a friend of mine, as are all the guys at “The Black Smith Shoppe” in Harbour Home. I would look at anything more happening to him, or his friends, as a personal affront, and I don't mean that lightly! Lay off, and I do mean Now!”

With that, McCarthy and Coleson left, without so much as a “Good bye”.

What the HELL had just happened? And, what did my son Ryan have to do with any of it? What the fuck?

The “discussion” had been entirely one sided. Neither I, nor Paddy, had said a word during the whole ordeal. McCarthy was F.B.I., but who was Coleson? My suspicions were leaning toward “Foggy Bottom”. And, I'm not talking about a back door drilling in the mist, though I felt that's exactly what had just happened to us, and not in a good way.

As soon as the door had closed behind them, Paddy slammed both fists onto his desk, and rose like an indignant raging bull. His neck was bulging, his face was flushed, I thought he might have a heart attack right on the spot.

“God DAMN It!”, he thundered! “Sean! Fix this! They can't do that!”

“Sit the Fuck down, and chill out!”, I roared back, rising to meet him, across his desk.

That seemed to shock him, which was my intent. I had to get riled up in order to calm him down, just to get a few seconds to think. My mind was racing.

“Do you have any idea who was just here? It wasn't just two guys! We're talking major heat here. And, they're far bigger than we are. We're lucky they might need us for something. Otherwise, they wouldn't hesitate to fry our asses, and they have everything they need to do just that! Get a grip!”

“Shit!”, Paddy murmured, slumping back into his chair. “What do we do now?”

In a matter of seconds, the “Big Guy” had done a “180”. Now he was like a little boy, with tears in his eyes, sheepishly peering at me in expectation of my being able to save him, as I'd done countless times before.

“Believer it, or not, I think we're going to be O.K., as long as we do as we're asked. They have already made that clear through the whole “Dog Star” incident. We've been working for them already. For some reason, they chose to make that much clearer today ... And, what's the deal with Ryan?”, I pressed.

“Hmmm? Ryan?” Paddy was regaining his composure, and his devious wheels were beginning to finely grind again. “I'm not really sure what that was about. They must be imagining something they just dreamed up. I really have no idea.”, he purred so innocently.

It was that precise tone that put me on guard. I knew better. Everything McCarthy and Coleson presented was no dream. Those guys were dealing in hard facts. But, I also knew that whatever it was it had just been squashed. I decided to let it slide, but not forget. “Where there was smoke ...”

There is damn well fire, as we all know!

Great installment, Chaz.
I've had it up, waiting to read it until I could focus on it - been wading through Twitter and FB on this weekend's #AlternativeFacts, shall we say. I bet Paddy wishes he could come up with some of his own...

This is getting intriguing. Brad and (as of now) unknown Collins presented Paddy and Sean a way out, but obviously Paddy's ego isn't going to allow it. I doubt if Ryan is in any less danger than before. Paddy isn't about to give up. However, Sean may be able to save his ass and his son's if he's smart. Great chapter, Chaz.

“Out of The Mist”

Chapter 157 of ? …

Gary:

My store had always been a pharmacy since it first opened in 1788. Of course, there had been modifications, and expansions, over so many years. The back had been extended. A second story had been added, which now contained four apartments. And, in the 1920s, a soda fountain had been built in. There are rumors that it served more than soda during prohibition. I am it's 15th proud owner.

The last major overhaul was during the 1950s, keeping much of the original ambiance, the soda fountain area being to most “modernized”.

Today, we have the latest bar code scanners, smart phone wallet pay terminals, several flat screens, all snuggled in the welcoming arms of the past. I prefer being at work rather than home! And, all the locals, and thousands of tourists, seem to like coming around just to hang out, make the well worn wood floors creak, and buy stuff. The sales in salt water taffy almost eclipse prescriptions, over the counter remedies, post cards, and tchotchkes. Win-Win!

It was early afternoon, after lunch, when Arie strode in for his daily egg cream. Though I had personally trained my young, seasonal, “soda jerks”, I always made it a point to “build” Arie's egg cream myself.

He was seated on his usual teal vinyl topped, chrome belted, swiveling round stool, elbows on the terrazzo linoleum topped counter, telling me about what had happened to Frank the night before.

He glanced up into one of the hanging convex mirrors. “You have a visitor.”, he nodded, then meandered into my office, behind it's one way window.

Jimmy Harrison had just walked in, and was headed toward the prescription counter, at the back of the store, where he expected to see me. I barely made it there before he did.

“I trust you and Cat are doing well.”, he leered, implying that he could change that.

“Better than ever!”, I smiled back at him.

“Have you acquired my special order?”, he pushed.

“Indeed we have! When would you like us to arrange delivery?”

“The sooner the better.”, he declared. “Tonight would be good, if that's possible.”

“Of course it is.”, I assured him. “When might we expect you?”

“2am, and don't disappoint me.”, he scowled.

“Excellent! We'll be expecting you.”, I affirmed.

“You better be!”, he growled, then turned on his heel, and strode out onto Commerce Street.

Arie emerged from my office.

“Did you get all of that?”, I wondered.

“All recorded.”, Arie grinned. “Well done! See you later!” He patted me on my back, then shadowed Harrison.

Of course, neither Cat, nor Ryan, or even Rafe, were going to be anywhere near my house in the wee hours of this new moon. I was confident there would be others around to meet Harrison, and whoever else, though.

This could prove to be a long night, after an equally long, but generally pleasant, day.

Jeepers, the show is about to start. This will be an exciting performance even though the major players won't be there. Little does Jimmy Harrison know what's about to happen. It's obvious that Paddy didn't take Brad's recommendations seriously. Can't wait for the curtain to rise and the play to begin.

Craiger

I enjoyed this chapter and can't wait to hear how this gets resolved, but trust that I will approve.

Yes, the curtain rises on Act 2, or is it 3?

That was fun - I think it' going to be even more fun tonight around 2AM!

I have to apologize that I haven't been entirely clear that the latest chapters have been happening simultaneously. Maybe I should have combined them into one?

Ollie and Tino on "Catch", Paddy and Sean in Paddy's study, Gary and Arie, in the drug store with Harrison, is all happening Tuesday afternoon.

Ollie doesn't yet know about Frank. Paddy has not gotten the word out to stand down on the "Ryan Venture". Arie is unaware of the "discussions" that have taken place. Things are moving forward without all of the pieces evidently in place for all involved. In other words, moving on out of hand, as things so often do, helter scatter.

As "The Author", I seem to be falling short! :spank: :slap:

Confusion can happen trying to keep track of all these gorgeous guys. But things always come out right. Keeps us on our toes.
