Oval Office Gets a Gay Man’s Touch

This is my office at home. Sorry, but I prefer warmer tones to taupe. Blech!

I have a home decorating rule. Every room needs touches of black.

For paints, the Ralph Lauren colors can't be beat, although they are a tad spendy. I used an all natural plaster product that was from American Clay, Inc. It's hypoallergenic as many of the new low or no VOC type paints / finishes.

It lacks coherence, but it's a tough room.

Well, sure. It's the very definition of a "tough room". It's oval, for goodness sake...

I don't think it's lacking in coherence. The overriding theme is, sensibility.

Note the bowl of fruit in place of a flower arrangement on the coffee table. In these troubled times, flowers seem like a needless luxury while fruit provides both decoration and an implied usefulness. Namely, food.

Bottom line: It's crisp, it's clean, it's presidential, but with a nod toward managed expectations.

The wallpaper colour ruins all. That's for sure.

And the furniture variety is oh so bland.

We need something distracting for this. Maybe a discoball on the ceiling.

It looks like the lobby of a cheap chain hotel.

The sofas are hideous.

And the rug is one of the most boring I've seen.

It is soooooooooo bland. I hate neutral colors. So what is on the sound system, One Thousand and One Strings' version of "Girl From Ipanema"?

I wouldn't call the sofas crisp, and it's either them or the clock, not both. It's not just the shape of the room that makes it difficult, but the historical constraints. I actually like it, especially the view from the other end, it's a beautiful room with all those windows.
