Re: Has anyone here met Paula Deen?

I met Paula the first time way back when she was running a Best Western motel restaurant in Savannah. After she opened up the first Lady & Sons downtown I would eat there at least once a month when I was in town. Of course that was back when she was actually heavily involved in the operation and was there on a daily basis along with Jamie and Bobby. Jamie is actually a cook like his mom. Bobby is not.

When the new restaurant opened Paula was heavily involved in it too but since her TV career has gotten so big she's rarely there anymore. She has a lady who has been with her since the old Best Western days who runs the kitchen and a guy who basically runs the place. Jamie and Bobby are also rarely there anymore and now that they are going to have their own show on Food TV, I'm sure the Lady & Sons will end up a Deen business in name only.

As far as Paula herself, what you see on TV is exactly what you get face to face. She's very typical of a lot of southern women. She's bombastic, fun, gregarious, loud, and has a wonderfully nasty mouth. I have never met Michael (her husband), but Jamie and Bobby are a couple of wildcats. All I can say is the women in their lives are VERY luck gals. If you think they're hot on TV, you should see them face to face.

The nicest thing about these people is that they are always very aware of where they came from and just how fortunate they are to have what they have. The boys also know that mama is resposible for it all and as far as they are concerned she is a living goddess and they waste no opportunity to tell anyone.

The only bad thing about Jamie and Bobby is that they're both definitely and unfailingly straight. But I have heard from a couple of friends in Savannah that they both are very gay friendly and realize that mama is a gay icon. I have heard that Paula's brother Bubba is gay although I don't know for sure, so this may have a little to do with their attitudes. By the way, Bubba has a great seafood restaurant outside of Savannah that I love. It's called Uncle Bubba's Oyster House and the food is wonderful.

OMG! Two of my favorite cooks together?! I'm so excited!!

Re: Paula Deen on

Speaking of Rachel Ray....I just got back from the grocery store and while I was standing in line I couldn't help but notice the screaming headlines on the scandal sheets that line the checkout counter....

RACHEL RAY THROWS HUSBAND OUT OF HOUSE

She Says Husband Cheating On Her

He probably is, considering that she is NEVER home and running around looking for restaurants where she can eat for $40 a day! HA!

I have been a member of this community for the last couple of years.

I've discovered over the last few months that while I don't particularly hate Rachael Ray, there are several things about her that annoy me. Maybe I'm warming up to her.
with no disrespect to you BW, but the founder of that site has way too much time on his hands, though i'm not a HUGE fan of RR i enjoy her recipes

I don't hate her but she does get obnoxious at times. If I hear her say "YUM-O" one more time, I may throw up. I also don't think she is "all that" in the kitchen cooking and as far as eating out on $40/day, I guess it works if you're a girl and all you order are appetizers or go to the "early bird specials" with the 70+ crowd. Other than that, she's OK. I'm just not a big fan.

Re: Paula Deen on

I enjoyed both Rachel and Paula when their shows began.
If I were working in a kitchen with Rachel, I'd have to beat her with a mixing spoon. She's become too hyper and way too Richard Simmons to enjoy.
I lived in Georgia for 10 years and I never met a Georgian who put the Southern accent on in so obviously a phoney manner as Paula. She makes hearing "y'all" sound so fake and affected. Her phoney horse laugh is so fake and annoying also. Even her sons try the same tactics. It must be marketable.
Both have ceased to be real people and merchandise themselves as commodities.

rachel ray annoys me, and paula deen scares me

Re: Has anyone here met Paula Deen?

i liked to watch paula deen a few years ago when she had her simple cooking show on food network but since she has gone so "hollywood" i don't enjoy watching her as much.

Re: Has anyone here met Paula Deen?

My aunt and uncle are both pretty famous chef's in Miami, I've met almost everyone from The Food Network.

Rachael, Paula, Nina, Alton, Mario, Puck, and Martha (she's a total bitch)

Alton Brown was definitely my favorite to meet. He's very nice in person and a complete geek,

Re: Has anyone here met Paula Deen?

i saw her cook at the foodshow last yr she waved to me & said hello. i think she's friendly enough

Re: Has anyone here met Paula Deen?

I, personally, have no experience with Paula and have no feelings about her one way or another. The only impression I have is what I have been told by others who have, indeed, met her.

One of my best friends signed up for a cooking class she gave once. She paid quite a pretty penny to take the course and was very excited as she is a big fan of Paula's and watches her shows, reads her magazines, etc. The brochure for the class encouraged participants to bring memorabilia as there would be a "meet-and-greet" session after class. My friend went and said the first thing Paula did was tell an EXTREMELY raunchy joke full of very course language which kind of put her off. She said that only a few people in the front laughed as the rest were quite stunned at the roughness of the language, especially right off the bat. While the actual class went fine and the recipe they were taught was great, the meet-and-greet was not what my friend expected either. She said that they were asked to form a line and then approached a table where Paula and her hubby were seated. Behind Paula and hubby was a complete circle of handlers who basically served as buffers between Paula and the class members. You were to hand your item to a handler, the handler would push it across the table where both would sign (whether you wanted hubby's sig or not) and then another handler would lead you behind Paula who would look up long enough for the camera to flash and then you were promptly whisked away and handed your signed memorabilia as you were lead out all the while being asked if you wished to "purchase" copies of the photo. My friend said at no point did she make eye contact, no words of hello, no handshake, no words of thanks, etc. My friend said there were only like 25 to 30 people in the class and she surely could have taken a moment to get personal (particularly considering the size of the check my friend wrote), at least for a moment, with the participants. Needless to say my friend was rather disappointed as Paula seems so down-to-earth and approachable on TV and expected this in the class. While she is still a fan, she is not as avid a one as she was before.
