So I'm watching an old episode of Toni Braxton's reality show and her sister takes her to a Tanning Salon to get SPRAYED...No person of Color I know living in the Dirty South has ever talked about getting Airbrushed...

I went online this morning and read many message board postings from White Tanning Salon owners that claim they Airbrush Black customers just as much as their White Customers....Huh?

A few comments from Tanning Salon Owners:

"As most of the comments above who do Africian Americans. I do the Africian Americans/Asians, Hispanics, latinos and usually with consultation you will find out the objective. some mixed Afician Americans or other nationality they usually have in mind what they are looking for example I spray a Africian American who likes a golden tone and one likes a reddish tint, so I plan & spray accordingly. I have another latino who likes a hershey look and I just mixed to their specifications.

My advice is consult and plan. Just like you do with other skin types. :)
Best REgards"

"I tan several african americans usually just looking for even color and enjoy the time to relax and re-energize."

"yeah i do them all the time.. they love it" ...

"spray your African American Customer. I have sprayed caucasian ladies that are probably darker than she is.

Even if she doesn't come out darker, she will have a very even tone if you do it right. She will probably be impressed."

My skin tone is Medium Brown..Everything below my Neck is of course more of a light Brown...I'm curious about Airbrushing but I don't see my different tones as something I want to change or improve...But I like the Glowing thing about it...

I think I might want to Glow...When people look at me I want them to say "Man you're Glowing....Something is different.....Are you in Love?"....

None of my Black family members & friends patronize Tanning Salons...What do you Tanning Salon patrons think? And do you know any people of color that Airbrush? Do you think the Clerks will refuse to Airbrush me out of fear and Laugh me out of the Salon?

To be honest, I don't know any white people who talk about it either. Either my friends don't go (likely) or they go and just don't talk about it (less likely). If you're interested, go and talk to them about it, or call them.

Thats weird. Im Black and I do know a lot of Black people but Ive never heard of this. I am pretty light, but Ive never wanted to go get a professional tan. That usually happens naturally in the summer time anyway. I can understand why a certain group of black people would want to tan. My mom is always talking about tanning because she is extrememly light skinned. Like "Channing Tatum without a tan" light. She gets burned and airbrushing may be something that she would want to try.

Slight change of topic: I lol when White folks talk about their tanning and then look at me and say some stupid bullshit like "Oh, I get even Blacker than you in the summer."

Continue with your convo, now.

Ive heard that one. "My friend goes to a University in Flordia, she's darker than you !" or one of my guy friends would hold his hand up to mine and say 'Look ! Im darker than you.." People get a kick out of that for some reason.

I have color to me and I go tanning regularly...I'n the tanning bed. I get too pale in the Winter...makes me look ill or something.

i'm sorry but i find it  @ black people going to tanning salons especially dark skinned people. i have no business being in a tanning salon just like i have no business getting my hair in twist because it all happens naturally. :p

Why would a dark-skinned person want to go to a tanning salon or get a spray tan??

It doesn't make sense.

I know for brown-skinned people -- like Indians -- cosmetics that are "skin lighteners" or "skin lightening creams" are BIG sellers. In many non-White cultures, having lighter skin is considered more desirable.

Even in photo shoots in India, I know that they digitally alter the photographs to make the people's skin look lighter.

See this article from NPR about skin lightening for men in India --

For decades, the cosmetics industry in India has made millions selling skin-whitening products to women. Now, it's making more money by convincing Indian men that they should be lighter.

Industry analysts say skin-lightening creams for men, first introduced a few years back, are selling well, and that the Indian market is growing as India's economy improves.

The TV advertisements tend to send the same message: Light skin makes you attractive to women and successful at work. Dark skin, by implication, does not.

'White Is Hot'

"Obviously what you don't have is what you want. The Western world, they go in for tans. They want to get a little brown touch to themselves. They think that's hot," says Darshan Gokani, 27, a model for TV and print commercials. "So, what we think over here, since we are brown-skinned people, white is hot."

We're not talking about laying under a Lamp like their White customers ....What if the Tanning Salon is able to come up with an Airbrush Color that brightens you up? What if you could look like you just stepped off the Cover of a magazine? It sounds like this airbrushing process would enhance a person of Color and not make them look unreal...... Keep in mind all of this is temporary..It fades away...

You're right it doesnt make any sense to you because you never heard of it...It's good to learn something new....According to Tanning Salon owners a person of a darker complexion can opt for a Hershey tone and they can play around with the Colors until they find what the customer likes......

I loathe fake tans. They look fake and nasty.

My White friends look good when they tan @ the beach or under the Lamp but I've never seen them with an Airbrush Tan...Toni Braxton and her younger sister looked beyond Good before the Airbrush tan but they appeared to be Glowing after they went under the Spray...

Maybe an Airbrush Tan looks better on a person of Color VS someone that is White...I could see it being easier for a Person of Color to pull off the look becaue it's blending with their skin tone and giving them that Glowing-Polished look....

I had dinner with a friend who works part-time at a tanning salon in suburban Fort Lauderdale this sunday so I asked him about his experiences. While the majority of customers are white and hispanic they do have a sizable amount of blacks. Some do the beds, most opt for the spray tans. Evening skin tone is the main reason. Some blacks have "ashy" skin but the spay gives them a "wet glow' look. He said some of their other locations closer to the beach also have a sizable black customer base. From what the owner has told him, blacks getting spray tans is common in the business nationwide.

Many black people have uneven skin spots/sun damage spots. That's the only reason I could see of a dark skin person getting an airbrush tan to sort of even out their skin.

Tans can help even out skins with different tones. Also a natural tan adds a certain glow to the skin. I can see why black/brown folks would like a tan.
