  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

people still think you can give someone aids

No. I think it is also black males as well; mostly hetero, I suspect.

This would make sense, it explains what I heard about gay/bisexual cases leveling out, it would also explain why black women are accounting for the most new cases. They certainly aren't getting it from GAY men of any race. Unless there was some mass raping of HIV+ gay men by black women that I didn't hear about.

Karen, I've read all your dopey posts and have to pronounce you Troll of the Century!

Thanks honey, this crowd here is a bunch of downers, and not the good kind!

I never did think there was a good kind! Honey, forget the Gin, we're going straight to Tequila shots off washboard abs!

Karen, I've read all your dopey posts and have to pronounce you Troll of the Century!

You're telling me you don't know of the great humanitarian efforts put forth by the Stanley/Karen Walker relief fund?

Would you risk contracting HIV by not using a condom simply because some HIV carriers do not develop AIDS?

In other words in this imaginary game of Russian Roulette do you imagine your self sufficiently lucky?

If ignorance is the primary issue then we might consider that the syringe, and promiscuous sex are innocent bystanders that have absolutely no influence upon our decision to use a condom.

A wiser man than I said that ignorance is not the culprit, rather arrogance that would attempt to persuade us that we are luckier than the next man.

The OP was simply stating that people due to their lack of knowledge may be the worst part of the whole issue. I don't see where it was mentioned that she would have sex with someone with HIV because they might not get AIDS. She was addressing the fact that to this day, people are still unaware that you actually cannot contract AIDS. That being said, it shows that they have advanced no where in educating the children of today's youth. In addition to that, there are still people who say that you only get HIV from gay people.

I don't mean to split hairs (even more) but nobody has ever or will ever die from AIDS. They die from complications related to AIDS, things you mentioned such as liver problems et cetera.

Using that distinction, most cancer sufferers don't die from cancer, but from complications caused by the cancer disrupting other functions within their body. As an immune system disease, AIDS kills people by diminishing their immunity, so of course it is often something else, like pneumonia, that eventually causes their actual death. But the root of the cause is, of course, HIV/AIDS.

Liver damage and/or cancer is not a result of suffering AIDS either: it's a common side-effect from the extensive drug cocktail treatments used to manage HIV/AIDS. That's very different to the fatal diseases caused/enabled by AIDS itself.

It seems to me you are debating semantics rather than substance. If people call the disease HIV or AIDS, does it really matter outside of substantive medical discussion? From a layman's point of view, both are interconnected: a terrible disease that weakens one's body to the point that it cannot protect itself, resulting in death. If someone ignorant of the disease's processes confuses HIV infection with full blown AIDS, I hardly see that ignorance as a greater problem than the management, treatment or cure of the disease itself.

Ignorance of HOW you transfer the HIV virus is, of course, an enormous problem. But ignorance of the name, be it HIV or AIDS or whatever, doesn't seem to be such a big deal to me.

While I wholeheartedly agree that more education is required worldwide, I'm not really sure what your point in this thread is.

No one is disputing that it happened, what we're saying is that a BMT is not in any way a conceivable "cure" for the disease. Again, the procedure is invasive and more painful than the word painful can convey. A friend of mine had one done and said he wouldn't wish that pain on Adolf Hitler.

If it were a reasonable cure, why haven't they started more trials? Probably because you won't find too many people willing to go through the procedure, even if the end result is a life free from HIV.

While I wholeheartedly agree that more education is required worldwide, I'm not really sure what your point in this thread is.

I was frustrated at a lack of understanding of the disease. I've said that about 600 times. Is it a HUGE deal? Is the world going to crumble? Is this frustration going to land me in the psych ward? Nah, I was just venting. But if you guys insist on searching for some deep, hidden meaning, by all means have a field day. :gogirl:

](*,)](*,)](*,)](*,)](*,)

HIV is the virus. HIV has the potential to develop into AIDS, but it doesn't always. Some HIV+ people never get AIDS.

True, but it's hair-splitting to the man in the street.

If it scares people into practicing safe sex then it's swings and roundabouts, really. In fact, since you can't have AIDS without HIV it's kinda swings and roundabouts anyway, so let's not worry about the exact to-the-letter definitions.

Oh, I get it now. Like when the news announces that someone has died of diabetes I think "no, stupid, they died of complications of diabetes". Still, I don't throw a hissy fit and make a nuisance of myself like SOME people.

Yes, to me it's like a certain store telling me that their new vibrator or Dildo range is 'exactly like the real thing'.

And trust me I DO throw a hissy fit, maybe not make a nuisance of myself, but I definitely throw a hissy!

It seems to me you are debating semantics rather than substance.

I won't argue that. But I always thought knowing what you're talking about is favored over not knowing. *shrugs*

If people call the disease HIV or AIDS, does it really matter outside of substantive medical discussion?

Yes. The difference is sounding like an ignorant dimwit or sounding like you know what you're talking about.

Ignorance of HOW you transfer the HIV virus is, of course, an enormous problem. But ignorance of the name, be it HIV or AIDS or whatever, doesn't seem to be such a big deal to me.

Is it a huge deal? No. I've already said that, a few times I think.

Excuse me while I draw out your trophy.
