One thing though as regards to the basics of screen shots. Anyone can make screenshots of a chat session as well as use software readily available to make a vid of any thing on their monitor without receiving a file.

So you must remember that all chat can be saved with a screenshot which includes whatever is appearing on the pc's monitor.
This can be saved as all sort of files and plastered anywhere on the web.

Every word you type & picture in a chat regardless of service can be saved to the local hard drive receiving the message.

I wouldn't give this guy the time of day and as soon as you felt a creep factor or just uneasy leave, and just ignore/block/report to site your concerns.

Don't lose any sleep over this creep they are a dime a dozen on the net just be glad its only pixels and not real life. Keep your guard up on what you do online as nothing is protected and secure.

You seriously need to calm down dude. Look at how much anxiety this one guy is causing you in your life over fear of being outed, and now you're even afraid that he could somehow get you in trouble for dating a 17 year old. Come on, get real. No offense, you just sound super paranoid. You're fine. I think the real issue here is that you need to take some steps towards coming out so things like this don't make you freak out.

That was interesting...my IP shows the name of my cable company, but lists a city in a completely different state.

Yeah, this isn't unusual - large ISPs can have entire blocks of IP's, and if you have a dynamically allocated one (or even if you don't) they might resolve to hostnames containing a city name that might be nowhere near yours; in that case it's just a name they've assigned against their huge pool of IP's and you're dished out a new, free one whenever you connect. In other cases, the so-called geographic lookup is skewed by where the ISP equipment might reside or their particular configuration. So lots of time those kinds of tools can be fun and a neat curiosity, but vary widely in their accuracy because they can only operate by basic technological methods and the larger ISPs especially (not necessarily the smaller "Mom & Pop" ones; although sometimes these are just resellers of the primary carrier, so have some dependencies) can have a much larger and more complicated infrastructure configuration.
 
that web site got my town right on the money, i didn't like seeing that. it's funny how people feel safe because you are on the web in the privacy of your home, but it is a very public place. you have to be careful....

i wouldn't know how to get my own ip addy, never mind anyone else's...

And changing a router or buying an IP on ebay helps (I didn't even know you can buy static ips on ebay)
 
Sorry, I didn't mean to jump all-over you. Misinformation and incomplete information can both be damaging/misleading.

You are correct: a new modem may be used for a new IP. Providing that the ISP will issue a new IP to the modem. In my experience, I have, at times, had the same IP from an ISP through various modems without a static IP for years sometimes.

Changing a router, though, won't do anything for cable modem users - DSL subscribers, perhaps.
 
buying a new modem just for a new IP is rather silly. there are simpler ways to achieve this.
and getting an ISP from any non p2p chat is also difficult.

stop that senseless "oh lfmao" unless you have some arguments.

Well, wait a sec. I have used Yahoo Messenger for many many years and have always updated when new versions came out. I noticed long ago that contacts not visible as "online" to me would go offline, and that little Yahoo popup notice appears advising so-and-so is offline. I see that, even though they otherwise are "invisible". Meaning...while they do not show online when their stealth setting is in the invisible mode, when they log off Yahoo, a notice appears to me.

I would guess that it works the same for me also, as I am on "permanent" invisible status....but I believe others still get that popup notice that I have signed off Yahoo Messenger.
 
When I use those websites that look at your IP to show where you are, it just locates my ISP, which is in another state... awesome.
 
I was on PS3 voice chat with a friend, and he invited another guy on. The new guy claimed to be a hacker, and told us what our state and Internet providers were.

How did he get this info, and how do I prevent others from finding it?

The question is, HOW (or WHERE) did he get my IP address? I wasn't online at the time- I was on the PSN voice chat (the one above the Friend List).

I tried using different proxies, (like 84.205.233.139 port 80) but they don't connect to the net.

If he is directly connected to you, and you him, he can grab your IP.

As for proxies, I don't know if it'd work work for PSN. Regular proxies funnel http traffic. You'll need a socks proxy for anything other than web traffic.

I never worry about someone who claims to be a hacker. Here's a pearl of wisdom I've always liked: those who talk, don't know; those who know, don't talk.

If you're well-protected on your network, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
