Political cartoon racist?

Racially-sensitive standards are in and of themselves an outrage. And insulting to the intleligence.

ANY intelligent, educated, and enlightened person OUGHT to be able to laugh at anything.

Bolded portion ends any possibility of useful conversation between us.

Of course it's racist but we all knew it was gonna happen. Fuck 'em. Let 'em show their asses. The way I see it, I see no point in stifling racist drivel. Let 'em show themselves for what they are so you know who's who.

Big Al Sharpton has now demanded an investigation:

http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local...rev_al_sharpton_wants_fcc_to_investigate.html

The problem is that Al Sharpton (like Jesse Jackson) doesn't give a damn about racial harmony. All that matters is stirring things up to keep the donations flowing.

Sharpton sees this silly carton, cries RACE, and his mindless minions jump on board. Other fools pick up the hue and cry, declaring proudly, 'of course it's racist.'

And the beat goes on.

*sigh* There is no double standard here. For centuries, essentialist arguments about the inherent inferiority of black people have relied on what's now known as the "Negro-ape metaphor" in order to justify the inherent superiority of the white race. There is a long historical precedent for the argument that depictions of black people as apes is racist in intent. There is no such historical precedent for representations of white people as apes.

BearDaddy, you said in your other thread that we're suipposed to be color-blind. While it would be nice if race truly made no difference in the way people treated each other, the fact of the matter is that we do NOT live in a color-blind society, and we cannot ignore history.

This about sums up my analysis of the cartoon as obviously racist. The only thing that I would add is a reference to Michel Foucault's observation that to effect a change in discursive formations such as this one, one must begin with the social constructs currently in place. That observation merely recasts the response in LilBit's second paragraph in post-structuralist terms.

Bush has been compared to a chimp without it being called rascist. Obama can be compared to a chimp without it being called a rascist.

Are we going to play the race card for the next four years???

[/i voted for him. next time i wont because of this

it is 2009. and as a white person i am always considered a racist for things i never had control of. my family was not here 200 years ago when slaves were around. why is evey white person to this day reninded of this bythe black community. give me a break. so from what i am understanding is that only white people are racists? i voted for obama who is half black and half white. but i voted for him because i thought he would so a great job. so now any satire will reflect on his 50 percent black side? dumb. so we decidecd o call obama black and he is the first black president, eventhough he is mixed. but we will focus on the black gene and all satire will become racist from now on? i never knew, monkeys, apes, gorillas were consideed a black slur. when bush had that comparison no one freaked but today we do. why can black make fun of thier race? why is there hate amongst the black community on skin color. seems to be more racism amongst themselves. why can blacks say ''nigger'' but if i do i am a rascist. it will never go away. i think as ''white people'' try to do the right thing we will always be consiered racist. there are a ton of ethnis groups out there including whites who are just getting sick of this. considering the ethnic make up of the us why do blacks still feel it is all about racism.

There had better not be four years of the race card. The standards on how the presidency is treated has been going down greatly during the last two administrations, so ANYTHING GOES should be the order of the day....and EVERY DAY. If our President can not handle it, too bad. Apparently our president can be the target just of about anything according to the "people's standards" that have swept the nation. It is sad, but the gates have been opened. "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen." I do not agree with the move, but the move is already here.....

unfortunately....The "Race-Card" began when white people brought slaves to this country and used & butchered them for free-labor...

Will whites have to spend a Lifetime being careful about the things they say when it pertains to race?.... Absolutely...That's a SIMPLE price to pay for the sins of our forefathers...

Your statement is rascist and incredibly offensive.

I think people who are seeing racism in the cartoon are missing some obvious points. First, Obama didn't write the stimulus bill so it couldn't be directed at Obama. The bill was written in the House. So people who make that comparison are essentially ignorant of how bills are written. Thus, it's ignorance that sees this as racist. Secondly, no major newspaper is going to run a cartoon that's intentionally racist. It's just not going to happen. So was this bad judgment? Of course. Was it intended to be racist? No. Could it be misconstrued? Of course. But this is akin to the woman who was offended by the word "niggardly" or the Dallas councilman who thought the word "black whole" was racist. We should be lifting the ignorant, not placating to them.

so youre the final authority figure on this i see.....its so many things wrong with this i wont touch

It doesn't matter that he didn't actually write it. The lip-moving readers of the New York Post believe he did, and so probably did this racist moron cartoonist. And the right is tagging Obama with this stimulus bill in any case. It's widely regarded as his.

First, this wasn't a major newspaper, this was the New York Post, which qualifies as "major" only by circulation and as a newspaper only by stretching the definition considerably. As a comedian in NYC said in my presence 20 years ago, "New York only has two newspapers, unless you count the Post, and why should you?" And second, right-wing loonies will do anything. If you think Faux News' ("We distort. You deride.") coverage of Obama's candidacy wasn't racist, you probably won't accept anything short of an actual lynching as being so.

And now you're asserting that you have telepathy for the mind (such as it is) of the cartoonist. You don't know his intention. Besides, racism can be unconscious. Even if he WASN'T thinking "I will now draw a racist cartoon," his racial prejudice could be operating. And people who don't think they're being racist often have attitudes that any reasonable person would identify as such.

well...look what happens when someone isnt lazy lol...nice post Críostóir

Uh....yeah. I certainly am. Nice to see you're not, though. Perpetuate the myth, my friend. Let's keep the divide growing.:rolleyes

I don't know whether the cartoonist was consciously intending a racist message or not. What I do know is that the final result (the cartoon itself) is racist.

"What about Irish and German immigrants who came over long after slavery ended? They have to pay too, right? They're white. Yeah, but Sharpton and the morons who buy into this bigotry make no distinction. It's only by color. Which, oddly enough, IS FUCKING RACIST."

Dude, you can spin this Topic anyway that makes you feel good..Black folks didnt create racism in this Country..White Americans have issues with change and that is why racism still exits..

Whites were afraid of change when Blacks were freed, but they got over it..

Whites were afraid of change during the Civil Rights movement, but they got over it..

Whites were afraid of Change when a Black man's chances of becoming President were highly possible, and like everything else they're growing to accept the "Reality"...

Those were milestones for our Country and Blacks embrace the "Change" while the majority of whites remain fearful until they realize everything is going to be just fine..President Obama loves his Family and wants what's BEST for Our Country just like the past Presidents....

Race & skin color SHOULD be irrelevant today but it's not and maybe that's what keeps things exciting..Having that Love/Hate relationship among the races always makes for great-Drama..

Our Great Country is a melting Pot of races..But what 2 races still go at it after 1,000 years? You KNOW the answer...Some things never change....That's life..

so how i understand this, is that racism will always exist because the blacks refuse to accept the fact that the whites agree salvery was wrong and it doesnt matter. that is sad. many ethice groups through out the world have forgiven the past. it is too bad the blacks do not. maybe it is based on generations and as time goes on, it will be ''the past''. the blacks to me seem like the most racist group these days. their racism amongst their own ethnic group is becoming more and more mainstream. when you have racism in your own group (dark vs med vs light skin color) i think it confuses the whole issue. this concern never gets answered. and if this goes on for the next 1000 years, who realy is to blame.

That's pretty racist.

We all have a right to free speech, so long as the cartoon it meets that standard, racists have a right to print their racism.

Anyway wouldn't you rather know who they are.
