If my dad hadn't been stubborn about it I could qualify as a tribal member here; for some reason he wouldn't provide information that would have shown native heritage.
But as someone with that heritage despite no official status, I totally love the kid's answer!

What I like about this kid's answer is that he's disputing the premise of the question, which shows he is thinking, and not merely regurgitating what he is being told. Teachers don't like students who give non-standard answers, and these students likely will not get good grades for that reason.

More likely teachers cannot accept argument in place of demonstrated mastery of subject.

It is one thing to assert that you are Native and you live in the site of the testing school. It's another to not list the three regions taught in the lesson.

There were concentrations of Natives, which is likely what the lesson had taught. Populations were not evenly dispersed, just as they are not today in the same continent.
