Amazing how quickly the economy recovered from, "We can't afford eggs & gas"

An adderall junkie, his cocaine addicted son, ketamine ridden handler, the candy man and a heroin addict…
are all over social media making posts about *checks notes* getting drugs off the streets of the US.

There's a clue in here about Trump voters. As he said, he loves the poorly educated.

About 20 years ago, I sat next to a lobbyist for the Chamber of Commerce on a plane. When I asked about his trip, he said that he was on a trip to talk to Legislators about low test scores in public schools. The COC was frustrated because it was going to be difficult to attract businesses to the State if the workers weren't literate and didn't have basic skills needed to make businesses succeed.

This is another place where the evangelicals in the Republican Party are at odds with the business wing of the party. Evangelicals want public money for private and religious schools and they are pushing for a Bible-based public school curriculum. The business owners want a worker population that can do basic math and have basic reading/writing skills.

It's just getting worse. Kids today have shortened attention spans worsened by social media interaction. Efforts to defund public schools in Southern States are making it more difficult to meet minimum goals. Many kids who were "home schooled" during the pandemic have fallen behind on reading scores.

A measure of where we are: George W Bush ran on a platform of "Leave No Child Behind" and worked with Ted Kennedy to get legislation passed that put money into getting all American children up to a minimal standard of basic skills. Twenty years later, Trump has vowed to get rid of the Department of Education. 🤦‍♂️

Corporations are looking for slave labour. Oligarchs and dictators want an uneducated underclass.

In another decade, there will be such a divide between have and have-not states, the grinding poverty in many of them today will look like a time of plenty as the poorest and stupidest turn the clock back to the 19th century and days of the depression.

It depends on the corporation.

The skills that a meat-packing plant wants is different than the skills Silicon Valley wants which is different than the skills a homebuilder wants which is different than what a hospital (often the biggest employer in a city) wants.

Meat-packing plants are looking more for low-skilled laborers. Silicon Valley wants employees that have higher education. A homebuilder wants someone who can do basic math and communicate. Hospitals are looking for college graduates with licenses/certifications.

You've hit on something that has become part of the societal economic turmoil in the US. We've increased the number of people getting college degrees by a factor of 5. Meanwhile, the number of high school graduates has more than doubled. The number of good paying skilled labor jobs hasn't increased in proportion to the increase in high school graduates. A high school graduate in 1960 might anticipate a union blue-collar job that paid a living wage and guaranteed long-term employment. These days, there is no such guarantee for a high school graduate. Positions for a college degree, which includes healthcare workers and white collar jobs, have increased, pay better and have a better prospect for stable employment.

Poor literacy and poor math skills in high school graduates is just going to make their job prospects worse.

The question that no one seems to be able to answer is, "Why do they think electing Republicans is going to help their job outlook?". It seems that there's just a general "pissed off" attitude of "throw the bums out", whether the bums are Democratic or Republican, which is likely why the Democrats took a beating in the 2024 election from young men who are high school graduates.

Silicon valley is counting on AI and a small, sleek workforce of College grads to rule the world.

What they need are the grunts that run around warehouse floors, clean up after the white folk and build roads and buildings for no money.

And they don't want the underclass to be raising their children above their station.
