I still do not understand how one lone senator has so much power that he can blockade the entire U.S. military. *%%* This is absurd.

I get annoyed with the almost prurient focus on a minority of Americans and their fixation with orange bigots. No one is going to change their minds at this late date. No one. Everyone has their minds made up, and that means Toad loses. The jabbering heads will not pay attention to that.

Toad is not getting bigger, he's got the same slice of pubby horde he always did, and he's unalterably alienated the majority of this country.

It's not that one lone Senator can blockade the military. The problem is that we have a bunch of idiots in the Senate who are abusing rules that were created in order to allow proper debate and deliberation.

Part of the problem is that the Senate is too involved in minutiae in routine processes, like personnel decisions. Normally, no one pays attention to this onerous, tedious process because these promotions and confirmations usually done on "unanimous consent" votes., where it's a voice vote and the President of the Senate pretends like he/she hears more "yeas" than "nays".

What Tuberville has done is objected to a "unanimous consent" vote which would require Senators to show up in the Senate chamber and vote to override Tuberville's hold and then vote on every one of the nominations individually.

For the record, Bernie Sanders is doing the same shit on healthcare-related appointments because he wants to lower drug prices. JD Vance is doing the same shit on DOJ nominees. Rand Paul is doing the same shit on Ukraine funding. All of these Senators can't get their fellow Senators to vote on legislation that they want, so they're obstructing other processes in fits of anti-democratic pique, in hopes that they will get what they want.

I've heard estimates on how long it would take to do roll call votes on the nominations- it's months. That's probably based upon the assumption that the Senators show up for work 3-4 days a week and take a lot of holidays and recesses. Schumer could put an end to this by forcing the nursing home aged Senate to show up for work 7 days a week and sit in the chamber and vote on these nominees one by one until they are willing to reform the rules that allow these abuses. My guess is that having a bunch of septuagenarian Senators sitting in the chamber for 16 hours a day will either result in a reform of the rules and/or the demise of a Senator from Alabama: either is a worthy objective.

^^But at the moment, he is still the front runner for the GQP nomination.

I remember in 205, he was widely regarded and treated as a joke...that there was no way he would win the nomination or stay in the race.

As a result, he almost destroyed democracy in the US...helped create a fundamentalist supreme court and came close to breaking the world order on behalf of the Kremlin

Until someone drives a stake through his heart, he cannot be discounted because he is pure evil.

You left out that he was an enabler for the Jan 6th insurrection and was on Trump's speed dial list that fateful morning, something he has yet to be held accountable for.

He's also trying to interfere with the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) funding. PEPFAR is a program initiated by George W. Bush in 2003 that provides low-cost HIV medications to stop the spread of HIV in Africa. The program is estimated to have prevented 25 million deaths and has raised the expected lifetime of SubSaharan Africans from 46 years to 56 years.

Why? Because the mental-as-anything anti-abortion crowd has convinced Republican Senators and House members that PEPFAR is an abortion program. Because fetuses are more important than preventing living babies from getting HIV from their mother's breast milk. 🤦‍♂️ Oh, and because programs like PEPFAR interfere with Dominionists' efforts in Africa to have gay people killed or imprisoned.

Here on Earth I, this is actually what the PEPFAR program has accomplished:
