They aren't just posturing.

But at least there's always this:

No one is invading Greenland, and no one is going to try and annex Canada.
And as always, we need to ask ourselves, "What are they doing that they are trying to distract us from paying attention to?".

Y'all don't have to annex Canada with tanks and soldiers.

Just destroying our economy with tariffs will do enough damage. And Trump is intent on that. He did incredible damage in his first term...and that was selective.

And just a reminder that the US seized Hawaii without cause and went to war to seize Cuba and Puerto Rico so we know that imperialist presidents could get their way in the past. Why do you think that an America of 2025 won't invade other places. Because of NATO? Or the UN? Or the Commonwealth?

We are all able to see the appetite among MAGA for imperialist expansion to distract them from boredom. We also know that tyrants need foreign conflicts with prizes at the end to distract their population from the kleptocracy. The mouthpieces are all out there promoting it.

Half of my family watched the rise of Hitler and the fascists a century ago.

There appear to be no guardrails left in the US that will hold once Trump is sworn in. Apparently he is looking to rule by reconciliation in the first 30 days to bypass the need for any Democrat votes in Congress. Johnson is setting this up.

If there is not some form of marshal law declared after some Reichstag moment within that time, a lot of people are now indicatig they would be surprised.

The same thing that Putin is doing to distract most of his country from the looting of the wealth by several hundred oligarchs. Foreign Special Military Operations create a state of war that allows you to make up all the new rules you need to keep your people subservient and turning their anger and frustration outward. Worked like a charm when the US invaded Iraq on false pretexts in order to seize their oil.

I'm not so sure.

Tariffs might have been really damaging if the US made anything. We don't make a lot of stuff and a lot of what we do make can be found for better prices in an Asian brand. Unless I'm missing something, most of what Canada imports from the US is automobiles, machinery and food.

So, Canada buys cars from Toyota instead of Ford. They buy farm equipment from Kubota instead of Caterpillar. Food... that's a little tougher but they can fight that battle by lowering prices on dairy and doing what Trump did in his last term, subsidize farmers to get them through the price war.

Canada is one of the US' best customers. If American companies permanently lose a customer (which is what is happening with China), it's long-term damage to US companies.

Canada does need to appreciate the US more, Canada is unable to defend itself and they have had free protection for decades.

Many years ago Pierre Trudeau attempted to get Canada to shift from a bilateral north/south focus to east/west.

To some degree that was successful as we laready had the Commonwealth countries to trade with and later, the EU as a trading bloc. Like the US we threw most of our manufacturing we had left after NAFTA drained it to the US and Mexico over to Asia, including China and other cheap labour countries.

Canada trades resources. Oil. Timber. Minerals. With 25% tariffs on those, Americans will effectively shut down those industries.

Countervailing tarriffs could choke the rest of our economy while we try to punish the US in return.

You all really have no idea how much damage you can do.

For those of us (everyone in Canada) invested in some way with resource sectors, our holdings can be wiped out in a minute.

I currently live in a state of anxiety and dread every day waiting for the axe to fall.

We will all only accept that it is trolling when we see it for ourselves. But bizarrely, I think we see Trump far more clearly than Americans who think he is a joke.

I will be glad to be proven wrong, but I see no evidence yet that Americans won't just go along.

The world is not the 19th century. Toad is going to hurt us all with his asinine tariffs. Trying any of that stupid posturing crap would destroy us, and the money that elected Toad isn't going to be supporting.

What a load of horseshit.

Sorry you aren't feeling loved but get this straight.

The US doesn't protect Canadains. It provides some assurance under the NATO pact that if RRzzzia invades it would 'defend' us. But not because America loves Canada like some child in need.

The only reason has been to protect the US. America would have no problem seeing Canada bombed to glass by bringing down nuclear warheads over the country before they reached the US.

And otherwise, the only other reason is to protect the resources that are owned by American based inmterests or American resource dependent businesses. We all get that.

And guess what? There isn't a ring of US soldiers along all of our coasts or posted outside our capital cities to 'protect' us.

Finally, the only threats that Canada has ever faced has been invasion by the US. First in 1812 and now under Trump.

So you want to feel loved?

Start acting like you deserve it maybe?

Trump's billionaires club will make out like bandits as he picks winners and losers. And a whole lot of them are looking to swoop in and buy up Canada in a fire sale.

It was 20th century tariffs that more or less created the Depression in the 30's. We're not that far away from that.

The only people who feel hostile towards Canada are the fuckwads on the far right and the people who want to participate in all the fashionable hatreds they espouse.

Actually, the economy isn't yet as broken as what preceded the depression. Toad of course would like to change that. But no one would make out like bandits if we militarily invaded Canada. First off it wouldn't succeed. Plus, the opprobrium that would bring would disrupt the global economy and the money would be the first to suffer. Toad postures and says outrageous things, that never materialize. I don't doubt that in his insanity he's crowned Kig of North America (minus that nastiness in Mexico) but he''d not actually capable of pulling any f that off, and while we all gape at his insanity, the money is stealing the country blind. That is the real agenda.

I doubt any money will be left after how much Biden is sending to Ukraine. Maga wouldn't want Canada as there are too many people like Elizabeth May.

You're going the wrong way, not only was that weak, but it was also cliche. You can't generate outrage with someone else's same old crap.

Canada will be fine, Pierre Poilievre will be leading Canada soon enough.
Nice Try.

Again, we don't directly vote for PM and we don't have electoral colleges.

We'll see if Ontario and Quebec warm up to him....not looking promising so far. Most Canadians find him creepy and only the west really seems to be on board with his populist messaging.

Meanwhile :)

All but three of those are NATO countries. All are Western countries, and the fact that the US isn't there is an indictment of all of us in this country.
