Of course they do. There is only a rule of law when they decide there is rule of law. That's what they mean by the rule of law. We need to stop telling ourselves they care about any of that or that they will think about something logical and come to their senses. They won't.

^ Nailed it.

It isn't about Trump only.

We learned everything we needed to know about the US and its government...and a huge swath of its citizens and how could any country trust the US again.

For years many western democracies have viewed the US as sketchy when it came to racism and equality and the tendency to engage in wars of adventure...but it was always part of the club.

More than a bit of a projection of piety onto "Western democracies" as if they are somehow beatified and no longer face their own internal racial and cultural and religious conflicts.

African and Mid-eastern and East European workers in the "Western democracies" hardly enjoy equality or universal acceptance.

There is poverty. There are illegal and exploited laborers allowed from poorer regions. There is reactionary pushback against Islam, against Sharia law. There is an anti-immigrant movement that is growing in Europe, and it blames elevated crime, both violent and non-violent, on these immigrants.

That's not to say the U.S. doesn't deserve its present denigration for its treachery and fickleness, but let's not lay it at the feet of a couple of pet sins with the implication of it being some throwback by contrast.
