I have seen plenty of evidence of the ignorant right across this continent. Need throwbacks? No shortage in Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio. And let's not forget Archie Bunker was set in Queens for a reason. Maine also isn't exactly the font of all knowledge.

Midwest? May I present Kansas, Oklahoma, and it doesn't get any better in parts of the Great West and Alaska.

America's schools have failed, and it is by no means a distinctive of the South. We are just more proud down here thanks to religious cultists who pride themselves in how much the "spiritual" eclipses all other "worldly" measures.

The schools are the symptom. The cause is an undercurrent of anti-science, anti-intellectualism that has existed for a long time. We had a short period after WWII where the American public put an emphasis on (and money into) education, in order to stave off Communism.

Now, we're back to the anti-education and anti-science norm... where the public gets their news from Facebook and Twitter instead of reading a newspaper, where the public will believe an Instagram influencer over an expert and where a chronic addict nepo-baby can completely disrupt healthcare in a few months:

Retardation in an educational context is not an epithet. It is inappropriate to remove it. Retardation marks the falling behind of the learner for whatever reason. The massive number of graduates who cannot read anywhwere close to grade level are indeed retarded, but it is not innate, but acquired.
