Political correctness will destroy the free world

I think that telling people to read an enormous amount of reading from a huge variety of sources and then having them write a 20 page paper with citations making both sides of an argument is not "brainwashing."

People who think anywhere outside of Christian or religious universities that you go in and simply are told what to think about everything are ignorant in the extreme. They have never been to college or they are happy to listen to what Fox news and people around the water cooler "tell them" about how college actually works.

The fact that the greater scope, more detail, and more research you do into a specific issue will quickly divert you away from comic book villain black and white viewpoints about the world is simply a fact of being educated, and it's what right-wingers call "liberal indoctrination."

I agree with you completely.

Just try to see what I'm saying. You can't self-diagnosed. It's just not a good idea.

I think the notion of investigating college campuses to find all the top-secret brainwashing programs going on that no one has ever discovered is so silly it doesn't require actual discussion.

A far more real threat is the fact that propaganda agencies have gone to court, sued, and won for their right to lie and intentionally spread misinformation in the guise of a "news network." This same agency loves to get on the air and turn "being educated" into a bad thing-- you're an elitist, and you're a brainwashing victim of liberal academia.

That's pretty much exactly what it means 99% of the time.

People censor me for my extreme broad-brush black-and-white viewpoint and try to force me to acknowledge that virtually no such group profiling is ever fair or accurate for a group that may include millions of people, fuck this PC shit.

One of the most common things you hear people say in response to political correctness is "I call a spade a spade." No, you don't. You say that every single tool is a spade, no matter what tool it is, and "everyone knows it, we just aren't allowed to say it."

Nailed it.

My experience is that the only people ever complaining about PC are the ones it needs to apply to, people who run around all butt hurt because the sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic language they and their families or tribe have relied on all these years, or their tone deaf inability to understand how casual their prejudices and bigotry might be is finally being called out.

My rule is, don't cry before you get hurt....but waht a lot of PC people are finally doing is pointing out the fact that minorities of all stripes have been hurt for too many years.

And not even a necessity in those. There are many liberal arts Christian universities out there, and I attended one.

On the other hand, I don't think indoctrination is the sole domain of the religious. It would seem that the military universities/academies are by definition not open to views that are inherently anti-militant.

Similarly, I would find it credible that the East Coast and Ivy League universities are quite likely responsible for the elitist view of the Northeastern Seaboard when it comes to valuing American culture.

I've argued here for legal restrictions on free speech in some parts of the world.

And regarding manners, I've also argued here that being polite is rarely a real limitation on free speech.

But in spite of those pro-PC positions, I think some of the recent events on college campuses here are ludicrous.

It's not a matter of brainwashing, it's feeding students a biased political narrative without counter-argument, discussion or debate, and the shutting down and censorship of anyone who tries to challenge or speak out against it.

"I and my like-minded members of the populace will decide the news sources for the entire country. We will fight to take off the air any news source which disagrees with our political beliefs. We have been educated in such an obviously perfect way that means all our opinions are correct. Those who disagree with what we say are obviously not educated and are stupid, and need to be taught to agree with our beliefs."

Yeah great xbuzzerx, wonderful democracy you've got going there.

There is a HUGE difference between aggressive racial and homophobic slurs, and a difference of political opinion.

And the very concerted attempt by you and many others in modern society to conflate the two so as to denigrate and slander opponents of what you believe as bigoted/racist is a major problem that is undermining my support for any political movement on the left.

Did you go to college in the United States?

I'm sure glad you're around across the Atlantic to tell me what the American college experience does or doesn't include.

You're just patently defending the indefensible at this point. You support a news agency's right to knowingly lie and spread false information on the airwaves just for the sake of the "balance" of making it appear there's an equal and opposite argument behind oh I dunno... things like Saddam Hussein being behind 9/11? When it's factually untrue?

Your type of "balance" you are advocating here is incredibly dangerous. And has absolutely no interest in facts or reasoned debate. It sounds like a load of butthurt that certain viewpoints lack the support to stand on their own merits but ought to be treated as credibly in public discourse anyway.

There is a HUGE difference between aggressive racial and homophobic slurs, and a difference of political opinion.

Really? Either one simply dehumanizes people into a lump group, usually for the purposes of demonization.

All black people are drug addicts and criminals... all (insert: refugees, aid recipients, Democrats, liberals) are drug addicts and criminals. Huge difference in internal worldview, right? Just calling a spade a spade.

Should Princeton have re-named the leaders of its residential colleges "heads" because "masters" is vexing and anachronistic?
