I took the measure of consulting a moderator prior to posting this thread. This thread is not meant for a continuation of the CGYMIKE thread. It is a poll and not a general discussion. Hopefully members will respect that this is a poll and not a debate, leaving the aforementioned thread and this to be relative but not a merge in waiting.

I agree and think it stands on it's own separate from the parent thread. But the discussion may be best centred on the poll and it's results rather than a broad-based discussion about the term.

I don't use the term and I don't have anything against it. My "beef" with the term is that apparently a lot of gays feel the need to use it because they feel that "straight acting" is somehow superior to "gay acting" (whatever that means).

I encourage you to read John McWhorter's critiques of the concept of "acting white" before you decide whether "straight acting" has any place in the mindset of gay men.

At this current time, i'd like to point out that those who disapprove of the term (i.e. have an active problem) poll 26.79% and not 97.62%. I can only assume you're read back to front since you are WIDE of the mark.

I guess I was unclear.

Currently 27.59% (16 people) have an issue with the term and those who use it.
Meanwhile 20.69% (12 people) identify with it.

= more people have an active problem with it than the number of people who actually use it. That's what I meant.

Other stats:
79.31% don't use the term.
60.9% of the above (48.28% of the total poll) dislike it.

For many of us the terms are neutral. I don't judge the worth of a man on whether he's "straight-acting" or not. Moreover I know "straight-acting" gays and "gay-acting" straights.

Hence the option in the poll that fits your view. Mine has been stated and re-stated in the neighbor topic: "straight-acting" implies a dynamic between sexualities that is denigrating gay people, and therefore propagates a harmful stereotype.

I think you really ought to tell us all what harmful stereotype that straight-acting is somehow reinforcing. Because as far as i'm concerned, there IS no harmful gay stereotype, there are only diverse ones.

That is neither the intention of SA guys, nor does it actually level the homophobia towards femme guys, but ironically at SA guys, from militant ones like yourself.

Getting the idea of why you made this thread now.

The poll may show that more people disapprove of those who identify as SA, than are SA, but don't you think its intolerant of you to essentially be attacking what may be a fifth of the gay community (based on current polling)? Who is propagating homophobia within the community here really? Its not SA guys. We're just being honest about how we feel about ourselves, you're just moaning at us because you don't like that about us.

Well tough. There are things which i don't like about the gay community, but i'm not a militant type, so i don't go around pissing on other gay guys just because they behave different or have different lifestyles or refer to themselves with derogatory names or feminizing ones.

Yet it seems you made this thread to attack the people who don't approve of it.

I don't object to the term. Endless guys that self label as straight-acting have yet to really fool me with their "straghtness." There are guys that can legitimately be called as "straight-acting." I can see how such labels make other gays feel unwanted or feel lesser.

Really makes me question how many guys you've met. I've known gays and bi's who I have not the slightest inclination that they were that label until they told me or came out. In the grand scheme of thing, I don't know one guy in the whole world who doesn't have "gay qualities". So when you say they didnt' "fool me with their 'straightness'", I have to wonder if you dug for their "Gay quality" and confirmed your bias. We tend to do that as humans. Helps us sleep at night Of course, this is all speculation. Maybe you met bad straight-acting gays

I agree, I was in denial for years, I finally accepted myself as being gay, now I find myself constantly using vernacular that is stereo typically gay without thinking about it.
It's just the real me leaking out.

I agree, he obviously doesn't understand the term. Ohh well. You can't expect everyone to understand. When we tell people to "Act your age", or "Stop acting like a child", we literally mean that they're putting on a play and the word is not synonymous with "behaving".

I think that when I am in my comfort zone I let my guard down, at work I don't advertise being gay, it does make an appearance on it's own by me using phrases that most people would equate with something a gay man might say.
Few gay guys turn to a str8 coworker, neighbor etc. and say "wow, that dude is so hot!" When with gay friends that might be said.
I think it has less to do with "acting" and more to do with keeping our thoughts and feelings private.
On occasion being the talker that I am I let something slip that a str8 dude would not say.
