Pope Francis meets secretly with Kim Davis on US trip

Exactly. The Pontiff paid a state visit as a (foreign) HEAD OF STATE, and of course he must.

It is very difficult to gain access to the Vatican Embassy to meet the Pope.

This was purposeful and cynical.

This Pope is no longer my guy. He's just another hypocritical old white man in a dress who appears determined that the Church will carry on to be unaccommodating and un-reconciling.

If he had told this serial adultress that if she couldn't do her job because of her stance that she should quit...that would have been one thing.

The fact is...he validated this cunt's civil disobedience. I am now rededicatd to my desire to see the end of the Catholic papacy in my lifetime.

Here's the transcript of the official statement from the Vatican responding to the various insinuations on that meeting between Francis, and Kim Davis:

http://press.vatican.va/content/sala...749/01616.html

I quote. :
The brief meeting between Mrs. Kim Davis and Pope Francis at the Apostolic Nunciature in Washington, DC has continued to provoke comments and discussion. In order to contribute to an objective understanding of what transpired I am able to clarify the following points:

Pope Francis met with several dozen persons who had been invited by the Nunciature to greet him as he prepared to leave Washington for New York City. Such brief greetings occur on all papal visits and are due to the Pope’s characteristic kindness and availability. The only real audience granted by the Pope at the Nunciature was with one of his former students and his family.

The Pope did not enter into the details of the situation of Mrs. Davis and his meeting with her should not be considered a form of support of her position in all of its particular and complex aspects
.

The highlighting is mine.

It appears that Kim Davis and her attention seeking, and publicity seeking team of promoters have overstepped their propaganda.

One hopes that this will be the end of hearing from this puppet of the right wing conservative morons who have put her up to posing as a hero and alleged martyr for her faith.

I looked all over the forums and didn't see this posted.

Of course Kim Davis is the whacko Evangelical who was denying marriage licenses to LGBT's in her Kentucky county. Apparently the Vatican embassy invited her to meet with the Pope while he was in Washington, DC.

My gay Catholic friends are hurt and disappointed.

Of course Jorge Bergoglio is the whacko who currently denies marriage ceremonies to GBLTs in the church he leads, and meddles in the politics of every country looking at equal marriage licenses.

Why would your friends be remotely surprised, let alone hurt or disappointed?

I get that the Nunciature lined up this freak show.

But let's not forget tht Frank also directly commented on the rights of clerks to refuse licenses for homo marriages.

Put together with him not meeting with LGBT groups of faith, these events clearly indicate that the Vatican is not in a reconciling mood.

Fuck him. Apologies and explanations not accepted.

I knew it was only a matter of time before those who kissed the Pope's ass turned against him. He shows his true colors while too many expected him to have rainbow underwear.

The Pope and the Church both have terrible anti-gay pedigrees. So his own behavior and that of his entourage are hardly surprising. However, at least today's, albeit still tepid, apologia from the Vatican seems like an attempt to get back to the Pope's efforts at inclusion and is better than nothing. Gay Catholics are accustomed to living off scraps from the table.

The pope. A man who lives in riches and luxury and does not practice what he preaches. Isn't Jesus supposed to be his role model?

Why does anyone care what he does?

No he's "Catholic" so Mother Mary is supposed to be the "be-all, end-all" for him/them.

Sure is. Thanks for posting it.

I'm not sure if this is a cover-up or damage control or an outright denial, but I liked it:

The pope, according to the Vatican's clarification, knew little of the particulars of her story. It appears it was not a private meeting to endorse her. Vatican spokesman Fr. Federico Lombardi even described it as not "a real audience" -- quite an insult to Davis -- unlike some of the pope's other meetings. And Fr. Tom Rosica, who assists the Vatican press office, said Francis personally approved the clarification, so the rebuke is coming straight from the top. Whatever the case, it is very rare that the Vatican offers a clarification of any kind. So this is a slap at Davis and her lawyers for using the meeting in a political manner.

After days of speculation, the truth has finally come out: Pope Francis did not hold a private meeting to express his support for Kim Davis's efforts to block gay marriage licenses.

According to an official Vatican statement, Kim Davis was among "several dozen persons" attending a reception at the Vatican embassy, "the pope did not enter into the details of the situation," and "his meeting with her should not be considered a form of support."

Moreover, it seems that the pope did not request Kim Davis be invited.

According to press reports, one man was likely responsible for Davis's invitation: Carlo Maria Vigano, a conservative church official who was appointed by Pope Benedict as Vatican ambassador to the United States (formally called the "apostolic nuncio").

Having created an opportunity for right-wing evangelicals to dishonestly hijack the message of the pope's visit to the United States, Vigano must now resign.

Many of us were upset and confused when the news broke that Pope Francis had met with Kim Davis -- especially given how she and her lawyers misrepresented what actually happened at the Vatican embassy.

While Pope Francis has continued to promote conservative teachings on marriage and family, he has also advocated for a more compassionate and welcoming church that advocates for the poor and socially marginalized.

But the Catholic Church is a complex and global institution, and not all decisions are made by the pope. Pope Francis has replaced a number of conservative officials -- many of them American -- who have undermined his leadership and vision for the church, but it wouldn't be reasonable for him to remove everyone appointed by previous popes.

Carlo Maria Vigano was appointed apostolic nuncio by Pope Benedict, and there have been indications before that he and Pope Francis are not on the same page. For example, earlier this year Francis forced Kansas City Bishop Robert Finn to resign after Finn was convicted of covering up clergy sexual abuse. Despite this, Vigano allowed Finn to continue ordaining priests until a new bishop was appointed.

Vigano was almost certainly involved in inviting Kim Davis to the Vatican embassy reception where she met with Pope Francis, and he may even have acted alone. Either way, he has no business continuing to serve as Francis's official representative to the United States.

He also met with a trans guy. That doesn't mean 'love the sinner, hate the sin (and all rights granted for equality and responsibilities therein)' isn't in effect.

Although I don't believe Francis' progressive views to have been "an act," he has made a step here that is not easily dismissed as "he was manipulated by his staff to meet Davis, but was unaware."

No, he was aware.

He can yet do an about-face and get a lot of the blowback behind him, but at present, the half-truths and deflections are becoming Hillary-ous and with equally damaging results.

Nothing short of an explicit statement from the pope now will be able to turn this around. Being the pope, it is going to be very difficult for him to recant.

And to answer the question, the reason so much store has been put in Francis is that the change in attitude at his inception as Francis I seemed to be portending a thawing in the hard line from the Vatican. Sadly, those hopes are rapidly melting away in the heat of this controversy, and justly so.

It sounds quite like the perfect storm.

Francis is actually in the conference today on homosexuality, immediately after the Kim Davis audience and with his hand pressured by the priest's outing.

Could be a seminal week for the Vatican's position on gays. And don't pardon the puns.

The timing of all of this couldn't be worse.

The Church appears determined to crush out any inclusion or conciliation in this synod.

Mess.

No, it couldn't be better.

No one was under any delusions about Catholic dogma. It was the tone that Francis was changing.

Let this be a watershed moment. Either he puts up, or shuts up.

This is a golden opportunity.

Like other high stakes poker games, I'm all in. He can either show his hand, or fold.
