FBI Director Kash Patel on Wednesday fired an agent in training for displaying a gay pride flag on his desk while appointed to a field office in California last year, according to three people familiar with the matter.

The trainee, who previously worked as an FBI support specialist in Los Angeles, received a letter — dated Oct. 1 and signed by Patel — claiming he had displayed an improper “political” message in the workplace during his assignment in California under President Joe Biden, according to a copy of the letter shared with MSNBC....

The agent trainee, who had most recently been assigned to the FBI Academy in Quantico, won an Attorney General’s Award in 2022 in recognition of his work, according to a Justice Department news release.

Here's the scariest part:

After the inauguration, one person said, FBI agents warned colleagues that they heard new pro-Trump appointees installed at the FBI were combing through internal employee files to find lists that identified employees as LGBTQ.

Ah... this Supreme Court where forcing children to undergo conversion therapy is Constitutionally protected "free speech" and "religion" at the Federal level. But having an abortion, forcing providers to show patients ultrasounds, mandating what abortion providers must say to patients, forcing patients to delay abortions for 48 hours, etc are not protected. Transgender treatments... not protected.

It's amazing how convoluted the 6 justices will come up with some reason to allow discrimination against LGBT people for religious reasons. Because 1 person's religious beliefs are more important that protecting vulnerable members of American society.

The weird thing is that I agree with the outcome, I just don't agree with how they got there.

I don't believe that elected officials should be able to micromanage healthcare that they don't pay for.

I do believe that professional organizations and licensing boards should be able to say what is appropriate treatment. Both agree that conversion therapy doesn't work and likely does more harm than good.

If this therapist wants to force a patient to have an inappropriate treatment, he/she should lose their license and their professional liability insurance. That would solve the problem and it would also prevent a bunch of old, ill-informed men in legislative bodies from determining what treatments patients should receive.

Federal law says that taxpayer-funded health insurance cannot pay for elective abortions, for example. That should remove any ability for elected officials to regulate the practice. Ditto for transgender care; you don't pay for it, you don't get a say about it.

There is an unfortunate loophole. "Clergy" can call themselves "family therapists" without any training, license or supervision. Because most are not licensed by the State, the State has no ability to regulate them.

You wouldn't be able to put a sign up in your yard that says, "Rareboy, M.D." or sign documents as "Rareboy, M.D.". It would be considered practicing medicine without a license. However, in most States in the US, you can put a sign up saying, "Rareboy, Family Therapist" without any repercussions. That's an important issue and it is more likely to be connected to the kinds of people who are doing disreputable types of therapy, like conversion therapy.

There are penalties for using credentials like "Licensed Social Worker" and "Licensed Mental Health Counselors" in States that have licensing requirements. For unlicensed "therapists" or practitioners who have their licenses pulled by the State, insurance won't reimburse the care, which has a big impact on whether these shady therapists can stay in business. Unfortunately, the clergy faux therapists have a full time paid job as a pastor and the therapist thing is a side gig.

SCOTUS' repeated extension of the First Amendment Establishment Clause as a "get out of jail free card" for all kinds of damaging behaviors is doing the damage. It's also why these evangelical activist legal organizations keep dragging cases to SCOTUS.

Keep in mind that this court, in the last session extended protections to a webdesigner who didn't want to do business with gay couples, even though she had never been approached by any gay couple wanting her work. The Court threw out a State anti-discrimination law based upon a "well, maybe someone gay might someday want me to maybe design a website for them" hypothetical.

No more Biden "We don't want to make radical changes to the Court" nonsense. SCOTUS needs to be changed so that ideologues on both sides can't make a "designer Court" to suit their own ends.
